because of how kung fu was popular in china, shams masquerading as teachers were as abundant as cheap knockoffs. It's even more humbling when you stop and realize that the first fight was basically a free lesson. In most of Ip Man's fights (Barring the "Give me 10" scene from the first film), he holds back, he telegraphs his attacks showing "I could end this fight here; here; here; this way and here." but always restrains himself. These are Sparring matches, not fights to the death. The scenes where Donnie Yen fully flexes in this role and "Lets loose" are some of my favorite martial arts scenes in Cinema, hands down not just for the brutality but for how clinical he is with his violence. He's not even considering the pain he's inflicting, he's just going through the emotions to end the fight as quickly and efficiently as (violently) possible to make sure his opponent won't get back up.

The way the Ip Man movies handle languages is weird, at least to me. I guess the policy was to let the actors say their lines in whichever language they're comfortable with, and then dub over the voices as necessary. This clip is from the Mandarin dub; here Donnie Yen is speaking Cantonese but has his lines dubbed over in Mandarin, while Huang Xiaoming and the lady are obviously speaking Mandarin so their lines are not dubbed over. Now, in the (presumably original) Cantonese language version of the film, we hear Donnie Yen's actual spoken Cantonese, while all the Mandarin-speaking actors get their lines dubbed into Cantonese. Thus, no matter which version of the movie you watch, there's always someone getting their voice dubbed over. Not that there's anything wrong with this, but it's just strange/interesting to me.

I fuggin' love this scene! After showing the student twice that he had the upper hand & beat him without actually hurting him, the student disrespects IP Man claiming he didn't know what he was doing & charges in for a hit. With a straight shot to the nose, IP Man says, 'Do you know now?' That was awesome...
