This tiny 35x20 foot bar with 10 small tables & bar stools is where some of the best musicians in the world play to let loose (play loud) for over 25 years. Been there well over 100 times. I always bring earplugs. Or wet bathroom paper towel in my ears.

For all those who are here because of David Bowie: If you enjoy the music in the video above you should also check out: The albums "Perpetual Motion", "Casting for Gravitiy" and "Fast Future" by D. McCaslin. You might as well enjoy the music of musicians and groups such as David Binney, Mehliana (B. Mehldau and M. Guiliana (drummer in the video above), KNOWER, Mr. Barrington, Wayne Krantz and Chris Potter Underground.

+pharoah I am here because of that. I have to admit that I am not a huge fan of jazz in general (though there are artists I like), but this I do like. I will check out some of your recommondations :-)

Big fan of Wayne krantz, as well as mehliana! When I heard blackstar I didn't know guillana and lefebvre played in it but they have such a distinctive sound! To the fans of blackstar album I would highly recommend the album "krantz carlock lefebvre" as well as mehliana

Mark Guiliana has also recently released an amazing new album called "Jersey" with a beautiful cover of "Where Are We Now". Big fan of his own music and his various collaborations.

OK, I'm going to use that horrible phrase 'David Bowie brought me here', but I am so glad he did. The world needs more music like this!

+jayrobb9 Try some John McLaughlin, also JM with Mahavishnu Orchestra, Chick Corea, Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, Weather Report and Jaco Pastorious solo, older Pat Metheny, Steps Ahead, Animal Logic - and that's just the "old mainstream" stuff I can see while glancing over at my CD collection. You are about to enter into a whole new world, young man. Also google "experimental jazz" or "exploratory jazz". Get ya wallet out.

Seems like so long ago. Best times of my life seeing music in NYC was at these shows. Maybe I saw the 55 Bar shows six times or so? Not sure if Bowie was ever in there with me. Around the same time, I saw Maria Schneider at Birdland and he was there. Right after Black Star's release, I had tickets for McCaslin's group at Vanguard. They did a week there once a year for a while, never missed it. Anyway, Bowie passed shortly before the Vanguard shows. What a somber week. I think I saw a set every night. They did Small Plot of Land and Warszawa in addition to some Black Star and McCaslin tunes. Always wondered if Bowie would have sung a little at some of those sets if he'd been in good health. The timing seemed to make sense.

Hi Callum, Mark is using a 16" HHX Evolution O-Zone crash (you can tell by the hand hammering on the crash). He also uses a Sabian 20" Artisan Light ride in a brilliant finish, Sabian 10" chopper and mixes between a set of 14" Click hats (as in this video) and a set of 14" Legacy hats. Hope this helps

if I had to hazard a guess I'd say an 18" constantinople, and from the sound probably a light one.

Nathaniel Smith Sabes que me parece que usa Artisian de Sabian , es un sonido super ligero !
@piktip10 жыл бұрын
Nathaniel Smith hi, thanks for the reply. but i doubt it's a zildjian, because mark is endorsed by Sabian. perhaps just like what martin cruz said (i don't understand spanish).
