Something I just realized watching this is another thing that seperates Guts and Griffith; while Guts goes through the most terrible suffering imaginable, he continues to fight. But in this critical moment Griffith gives up, triggering the eclipse.

Actually it looks like to me that he hasn't given up. He wanted to kill himself but he couldn't go through with it which is why he's frustrated. He's still clinging to some kind of hope but he doesn't know what it is until the eclipse triggers.

The kinds of people that believe media and stories can't or don't change someone's life in a meaningful or significant way, probably haven't experienced any good media or stories in their lives. Berserk definitely made me a better person and changed my attitude towards life back when I read it in high school. Back then I was maybe the worst person I have been in my entire life. The first volume of Berserk fell into the hands of a craven, selfish, ungrateful, frustrated, disenchanted teenager who needed to understand what real loss and hardship was. That old me thought stories couldn't put into detail the things I felt and give hopeful answers to questions I had. The characterization and development of Guts throughout Berserk is some of literatures best. Guts' life problems and sheer will to fight and overcome his demons for others put my past self's problems to shame. No matter who reads Berserk or when in time they read it they are guaranteed to walk away changed for the better. (Except if they're sheltered. Those kinds of people would probably get scarred for life and never finish the story.)

While reading Berserk I realized something. Since his birth, Guts was going through traumatizing stuff left and right and much like Griffith couldn't really open up. But unlike Griffith, Guts was able to find comfort in the band of the hawk and was able to open up to Casca. It was the first time he actually talks about his past trauma and kinda works through it which makes us and Casca think that this is a flawed but great man. The same can't be said about Griffith. We see Griffith as this god that always has a plan and while he does some questionable stuff never really struggles. But we see that the stuff he does for his dream does affect him. He, also. has struggles and insecurities but unlike Guts he can't open up about it to anyone. When he almost opens up to Casca, he realizes Casca isn't really comforting him rather she wants to see that perfect god that never struggles so he switches back to his persona. He dealt with everything by himself. That is until Guts left. Guts was the person he got closest to. He was the only person that could make him forget about his obsession he calls a dream. So, him leaving was devastating since the one person he was kinda opening up to left. This is something he wasn't able to deal with alone. Now, he really has nowhere to go. Guts left and everyone (even the band of the hawk) see him leagues above them and unapproachable. So, there really is no one there to comfort him. So, in this broken state of mind, he goes to princess charlotte to find comfort but he makes a mistake and gives in to lust and pleasure. When he tries to leave and gets cornered that's when I realized something. Not only the characters but even we as an audience held him in that god stature. Cause I and many others thought that he had a plan and he could get out easily. We all thought he couldn't make a mistake. That he wasn't human. To him even beings in a higher dimension (us) thought he was a god. I thought that even after a year of torture he would be alright. I even thought that that man with a broken man and body wasn't Griffith rather it was someoen else and he had a master plan. But we were wrong. He was human. He made a mistake and that costed him his mind and body. All of our images of Griffith shattered instantly. Now, we could only look on with sadness and pity that this once god that could take back a kingdom with a few soldiers is now in this broken state unable to walk, talk, eat or do anything. Griffith saw that everyone looked at him with only pity and this broke him even more. That's why he ran away cause he didn't everyone to see him in this sorry state. He knew that he was just a sleeping corpse that was taking up food and medicine and that broke him even more. In this state, unable to do anything he tried to commit suicide. But he couldn't even do that. He was literally useless and in this desperate state he summons the godhand and does all those heinous acts. He hated Guts at that time cause he saw that Guts got comfort from Casca. Something he didn't get. In his absolute lowest, without receiving the help he needed, he turns into a monster. The same can also be said for Guts. After, the eclipse, Guts got consumed by hatred and he abandoned Casca and was slowly turning into a monster little by little. In the same way Griffith broke under immense pressure, Guts was also breaking. This spiraled into Guts getting possessed and hurting Casca, forever ruining their relationship. But unlike Guts, other people were there to help him. Puck helped him to start opening up. Shierke literally saved him from becoming a monster. Farnesse took a lot of the burden off of his shoulder. So, he was able to keep struggling and kinda found peace. What I'm trying to say that, humans aren't perfect. We constantly make mistakes and stupid decisions. Every one of us can and will break given the right amount of pressure. That is why we are social creatures. Together, we can go through the darkest nights. Humanity's greatest enemy is loneliness. Griffith gave into his demons because of that while Guts was able to keep struggling because he had other people. We see people committing heinous stuff daily. We tend to ignore the fact that they were lonely and broken people that didn't get the right help. We never notice someone slowly breaking. We only see the aftermath. People commit suicide and suddenly people start coming out of the woodworks saying that they wish they could've helped. I gotta ask. Where were you when they were breaking? When they were crying themselves to sleep? When they couldn't find the strength to get up once again? Why was it that when they were looking at that noose they weren't second guessing themselves thinking about you? We need to be better. So, I say talk to the person sitting at the back saying nothing. Maybe they have just as much to say. Ask that kid that seems perfect and unapproachable. Maybe he's also breaking and can't find the help and comfort he needs at the moment. The only thing that can keep people from becoming monsters and doing heinous acts is the comfort that can be found from other humans. This is, at least, one way to interpret Kentaro Miura's masterpiece.

@Patrick Carlos "I have a request, my friend." "Griffith, that's not like you, just give me an order like always." "Some dreams are like great storms... *some men spend their whole life honing their sword to perfection,* others..." etc, etc. I think it's clear he brought up his interpretation of Guts' dream to Charlotte there, and Guts pursuing martial perfection by Griffith's side allowed Griffith to see their dreams as compatible, as benefiting each-others' goals. "You cannot sacrifice him, Count. He's already been sacrificed. Besides, a sacrifice not of your flesh and blood(either emotionally or literally, as the Egg Apostle demonstrates is a fair interpretation) would be meaningless." The last thing Griffith visualizes prior to "This I Sacrifice" is himself and Guts side-by-side over the battlefield. So when we put those quotes and moments from Griffith's perspective together, what do we get?

Also, the Godhand does no such thing. God, who is still canon, does. God chose Griffith, no more no less. God of the Abyss (1) is still canon. It's not like Griffith wanted to lack the ability to ever fight again. However here's the difference between Griffith and guts in their struggling. Guts always was able to bounce back, he didn't lose the ability to move, speak, and take care of himself. If Griffith lost an arm and an eye he would've carried on. This is an example of two very similar characters, dealt different hands, and it's so interesting to see how their paths branch off from each other when dealt said hands. Berserk is a masterpiece.

I reluctantly clicked on this expecting some cringy, tonally deaf fan-edit (that's how most fanedits are) and I got the most professional, emotive and just stunning thing ever. Even if it is quite emotional, I feel like your video has such restraint and fantastic timing, that it doesn't feel overdramatic at all. In fact it feels very mature, like a perfect representation of how Berserk should be edited. TL:DR This is really impressive and I hope you get to direct/edit your own film some day.

man I still keep coming back to this edit lol, it truly incapsulates the feeling of berserk in my eyes. When I watch all the ones that are just the simplistic rock or rap or that of the like it just doesn't feel like the deeper feelings berserk gives off. It isn't about intense energy and extreme combat, those are just the highlights the distractions. In my own eyes Berserk is gives more of a somber and heartbreaking feeling, like no matter what you do life will still find a way to make you struggle and it is always your decision to fight against it or not. This edit incapsulates this feeling in just 51 seconds, hell the most recent berserk edit you've done does the same. keep it up bro, I'd say your definitely chilling in the stars with these even if they dont have the attention they deserve

Okay but hear me out. Griffith is a human, he has his flaws like everyone else. However, in the world of Berserk he seems to be the only one with a dream. I mean a big, powerful, and concrete dream. A dream big enough to gather embers together to form the band. He made one mistake in the height of his emotions and that cost him everything. One mistake made by one man. One human. One feeling. It makes perfect sense that when given the opportunity to throw away his feelings and humanity Griffith accepts.
@nimahanna1709
@nimahanna1709 Жыл бұрын
It was a pretty big mistake and it was multiple. Waging wars, raping casca, causing another eclipse to attain a human form, this isn't "one mistake". Even if it was, he's shown no remorse. Many characters in berserks have big dreams, the elf/wasp girl, skull knight, the apostle genishka's dream is identical to Griffith's - wanting to be a ruler isn't unique. The reasons for his dream are also seemingly vain rather than altruistic, which makes his sacrifices for it even more evil. I get you're trying to say the circumstances made it possible for griffith to choose godhood, but you're really stretching the phrase "everybody makes mistakes".
@juangutierrez7277
@juangutierrez7277 Жыл бұрын
@@nimahanna1709 We can agree to disagree, I'm not really here to go back and forth on the KZbin comments but I'll just clarify some of my points. 1. Sure, other characters may have "dreams" but most of that is post-eclipse. For the reader/viewer Griffith's goal/dream is really the only one we get to see. Besides, Skull Knight doesn't really have a dream, he's on full revenge mode. 2. The mistake Griffith makes is sleeping with Charlotte. That's it, up until that point he was 100% in the right. He did what he needed to do. Participating in wars isn't a negative trait, it's simply what you do in times of war. They were mercenaries turned knights, not a band of ravaging bandits. There was honor in what they did. 3. Genishka's dream wasn't power, it was to rule by fear. In the flashback we get we see how his father was betrayed and since he's the one that betrayed his own father he lived the rest of his life afraid of betrayal. Griffith, on the other hand, grew up as a commoner, poor, probably an orphan. His goal was to become a king to, seemingly, help people and prosper. Once he achieves Falconia through Fantasia he immediately takes the role of a benevolent king. Everything he does after Fantasia has been neutral at worst. It might all be an act for Charlotte and the Pope but he has been nothing but a great leader and ruler. It's possible that in a timeline without the first eclipse Griffith could've ruled Midland in a similar way.
@nimahanna1709
@nimahanna1709 Жыл бұрын
@@juangutierrez7277 you ignored casca's rape in your romanticization of Griffith. It's ok, his power is compelled admiration. The phrase quality vs quantity comes to mind. Even if you think his only mistake pre-eclipse was sleeping with charlotte, there isn't really a worse crime he could commit in those times, it was the most dishonorable thing he could have done for the kingdom besides all out mutiny.

@@foreversent7510 I think vague phrases that can describe anyone such as "he wasn't a good person" and "he has flaws like everyone else" serve to minimize a persons faults to make them seem more relatable, even admirable. For me there's a line for certain actions where I don't consider it a simple "flaw" or "mistake", its more grievous than that. Even though he raped casca after he gave up his humanity, I'm sure he still knew it was wrong even if he lacked the capacity for remorse. I know this because in his kingdom he tries to do right things like create universal education, so he can still make the distinction between good and evil - though we're still unsure of his true motivations.

There's something very uncomfortable about seeing someone like Griffith who was bubbling pride and confidence doing a complete one eighty and sunk so low. It's hard to watch and it's hard for me not to pity him. I'm not justifying what he did by any means, but I can't help but feel like he wasn't just some empty monster. @@ceton1843 i draw my conclusion not from the setting of the story itself but other works that deal with causality take for example the legacy of kain series where kain destroys raziel in an unimaginable way but then raziel through insight reveals kains actions was suppose to be or have a greater purpose in terms of causality he eventually became imbued into the soul reaver itself now im not saying that that is the case with berserk but just think about the time guts and zodd teamed up to take out emperor ganishka after guts was left in a bad state after the altercation griffith noticeably watches on from the distance. As much as guts will hate to admit it he's actions are still sort of in servitude towards griffith because he liberated the bay at the time to allow the midland army to confront the daka. The gap in power is way too vast between guts and griffith i cant see any likely power up for him to confront griffith right now, but i will hand it to guts he does not give up and you are right what your reffering to is guts's ability to manipulate temporal junctions and defy his own fate this gives rise to his individual agency which fuels his responses to trauma, his will is indomnitable. However i feel his death is a fitting conclusion to this story but at the same time griffith is going to get his come upons somehow. Also there is the plothole of him sharing a corporeal form with the demon child I feel this is likely to influence the final battle.

Somehow in the world of Berserk, Griffith seems to someone with dreams so big, his first priority. For Griffith, his dreams were everything, he only worked for his dreams and nothing else. That's when he came across Guts who became his sole equal. Guts becomes his second most desired priority, a friend, an equal. But when he lost Guts to the same thing he desires most, he went feral and broken down entirely. And right after this, he cancelled out all rational thinking and went for the first thing that came in his vision ( the princess ). Now whatever happened after this, the whole year of torture, and ending of his dreams entirely, this man was lost and scattered and devoid of any directions. And when Guts, and the Band of Hawk revived him and he saw how everything was happily built outside of him, i think that was his last straw. He went beyond himself and gave up to his desires and granted for the most gruesome wish ( sacrificing Guts and the Band of Hawk ). With his dreams gone forever, Guts became his next target to get obsessed over. Whatever he did after was absolutely wrong and it was ruined it all. Griffith had a dream to rule his capital with his best pal Guts. Femto had a dream to destroy everything he doesn't have, Guts. Both of them suffered. But what Griffith did can never be reversed.
