For starters, Griffith was willing to risk using a tactic that could very easily go wrong and harm Guts, who had complete control over his swing the entire time, and did not I tend to harm Griffith. The only reason Guts made Griffith lose was because Griffith actually realized he had no more control over Guts and wasn’t confident in succeeding against him but Guts had full resolve and was as in the moment as Griffith were so he easily defeated him in the moment. Griffith definitely grew more ambitious and mindful of his success but he only waivered because he somewhat envied Guts who had just as strong determination as he did which is why he admired and wanted to keep Guts as a sorr of pet or prized possession to keep for his own amusement and ambiguity

They were, spiritually, way too far apart from each other to ever truly be friends. But neither of them had ever really learned how to make friends. All Griffith knows is how to manipulate, all Guts does is push people away from him, so in each other they created the facsimile of a friendship. But Guts started to grow and form real bonds with Casca, Judeau, Gaston, Pippin, Rickert, while his attachment to Griffith remained hollow and purely one-sided. Guts genuinely wanted to see Griffith become his best self, Griffith did not feel the same way about Guts. These are two of the greatest characters fiction has ever produced.

The thing that never occurred to me, Griff’s Will was that sword. It snapped from a single defiant man who wanted to make his own way in the world. His castle of glass crumbled as the dream he wanted exclusively for himself, began to slip through his fingers. For Griffith it was a sign of his real petty, narcissistic nature. Guts had friends that he could talk to and, ultimately, make sense of the terrible hand he had been dealt. Griffith had no friends, he had built himself up to be a god amongst folks, so he merely cracked at the first sign of real adversity.

Imagine if guts just told Griffith his intentions for leaving lol. “Hey Griffith, I over heard your talk with the princess. I’m thinking about going in my own adventure you know? Because I really respect you and want to be seen as your peer and best friend.” Griffith: “no problem pal, thanks for letting me know. Now my psychotic breakdown seems like it shouldn’t really go down” All stories happen because two people refuse to say what they really want haha

Even if he did, I doubt he'd let him go just like that. The duel would most definitely happen regardless, and as we can see, it went in Gut's favour

Most people seem to not understand that Griffith didn't see Guts just as a 'friend'. His feelings towards him were a lot more complex than that. Griffith, who is such a proud man, only ever showed his vulnerable side to Guts, he acted like a naive child when he was around, he played and laughed with him, he even risked his life in order to save him, without a second thought. Guts made Griffith feel human again. And that's what broke him eventually. He didn't just lose a friend but actually the Love of his life.

He truly seen Guts as something special. That whole idea of what Griffith consider to be a "friend" may have been true in past, but as time went on after Guts have became a member of the Band of the Falcon, he may have stopped believing in that idea. Guts have become someone that Griffith (even if he at first didn't admit it) could see as a friend, probably even more than that. Even Casca have mentioned that Griffith have changed, and it was because of Guts. During the Eclipse, Griffith have admitted that Guts was the only one who ever made him forget his dream.

This was such an amazing scene when i saw it in the original series. It demlstrates how Guts has spent the last few years doing nothing but combat at the behest of griffith, while griffith focused on societal and political areas, allowing for Guts' growth to quickly eclipse griffith. It parallels the real world where those woth power are not always the most capable, they are people who have managed to collect people to work for them. And the realization that someone is better than griffith is enough to drive him to madness, to change from a driven man to a bitter opponent who wanted nothing more than to be the most important again. Suuch good writing, probably one of the greatest stories ever written

Just realized how ridiculously strong Guts is. Physics-wise. He landed the strike at like 10 degrees to the blade and didn’t cut through it but still put so much force through its side that it snapped in half, and was still able to easily stop it before Griffith’s shoulder… in a more physically realistic world than Baki, Guts might be Yujiro level…

Gutts exhaling afterwards was significant in itself. He was in total control, unfettered by emotion, just his longing to be free; to the point Griffith's arm was spared, because of that control. That is Gutts at his best, instead of going BERSERK.

Really small change from the 97 anime, but I really appreciate that they made Griffith’s sword flex under stress and snap rather than being cut through. It’s a much more realistic way for a sword to snap, especially considering it’s been used for a long time. Probably nobody else cares but I think it’s a nice change.
