When you're stopped at a light the transmission already does internally shift into N if you're stopped for a while. It's mostly a fuel saving thing but also helps with wear and tear. It's called "decoupling at standstill" (EDIT: this applies to the ZF 6-speed and 8-speed, not sure about earlier ones)

I let my car idle yesterday for half an hour, because the windows were frosted. Driving away with frozen windows isn't something you should do. Sometimes it will take a long time to scrape the windows and when the car isn't running at the same time it will take even longer. But yeah when windows are clean then 30sec and I go.

@BMWDoctor I can imagine, I told my colleague to turn his transit engine off the other day when I was talking to him at the window, all I could smell was adblue and diesel. If only you were more up North I'd get you to do some work on my Cooper S R53, I watched your series and enjoyed it! And I've experienced most of the faults. But now I have a fault that most garages can't find, or they don't want to touch it. Misfire cylinder No2 from cold start, it takes 5 attempts to get it running on all 4 cylinders, then it misfires for a mile or two. And then it runs fine until the next morning. It's temperature related, warm weather it's fine, 0°c it's fine, if it's 9°c it's a pain. Weird fault, hope I can get to the bottom of it next year.

I do respect you for all your knowledge sharing and expertise on BMW. But I don't think kick down does any bad to the engine at all. The kick down just trigger the engine to produce the maximum power it could produce within the designated limits which made by engineers. It is totally fine to the engine and that is why the kick down switch is designed for. Namely, kick down does not make engine work in way which exceeds it limits.
@heistkev
@heistkev 16 күн бұрын
I agree. BMW does not over-engineer the entire car and throttle mapping, etc., only to then put a kickdown button that will override all that engineering and damage the engine?? ZF transmissions are beasts and can handle boat loads of torque. Way more than you would ever put into it by hitting the kickdown.

Big NO to the neutral drop or power braking. Be kind to your 1-gear trans, have the fluid AND filter changed at least every 60k miles or if it becomes dark in color. I recommend finding neutral just prior to shifting to park. This will eliminate driveline windup in prep for shutdown.

In my 04 530d i almost never feel like using the kickdown. Its remapped to 300hp and using the kickdown just feels painful. Its 300k km on the clock, and i cant imagine the gearbox, driveshaft and diff is built to get that jerking load of torque suddenly applied to it. With 300hp/650nm the car can pass most normal highway traffic with ease by using 80% throttle anyways

I've never in my life seen anyone 'park' their car in Drive and with the handbrake up. Who in their right mind do that?? Put it in P if you gonna park, or if u just gonna have a short stop just hold the brakes 'cus it decouples. It's literally coded into the TMS.. Even the SMG, despite it being more of a automatic manual. No clue about the older steptronics. I've heard it is common to use the handbrake in traffic over there in the UK. Which baffles me and nobody should do that anyway. Also, about the kickdown - Just don't abuse it. Fine to use it from time to time.
@iainhay2823
@iainhay2823 25 күн бұрын
@@Olaipai good driving instructors here teach you to put the hand brake on because if you sit with foot on brake and the car behind shunts you you can lift off in surprise. You then hit the car in front and that’s on your insurance or worse you run someone over.
@Olaipai
@Olaipai 24 күн бұрын
@@iainhay2823As you might have understood, I am not from the UK or US. Sorry for wall of text. I see why it logically sounds like a good thing. I personally however do not understand how this is safer than keeping your foot on the brake in an auto or flicking a manual into neutral and hold the brake. The handbrake is objectively weak compared to the brake pedal. Handbrake is only working at the rear, the brake pedal on all four. Another point is that you are slowed downed considerably in case you have to do a quick maneuver to avoid something or proactively react to something. You are also positioned in front of the brake pedal when seated properly, meaning if you get hit from the back you get pushed into the pedal. Using only the handbrake when coming to a stop in newer vehicles you also end up not using certain features of the car like "start&stop" (Let's not talk about that function). You do however get more use out of the stopping power of the car if you have auto-hold and use the handbrake. And some newer cars automatically disables your handbrake if you press the accelerator. For the latter if you do get hit, you might also be so hard to move that you end up absorbing more energy than designed or unnecessary amount of energy cause more damage to the vehicle or even worse bodily injuries. I do see a point to use it for a short term if you are stopped and is unable to use the brake pedal, but if that is the case - Why not just wait till' you can pull over safely or into a parking lot and then sort whatever you have to do? I am not familiar with UK car insurance, so I cannot comment on that. But here in Norway, it would be the initial driver that caused the scene to be at fault, especially if they hit you from the back, and in the event that if you were hit so hard you hit someone in front of you; Since it was the result of the initial driver hitting you, it wouldn't affect you (ofc there are certain edge cases or situations which would null that). So, personally - The pros for using the handbrake all the time outside of hill starts or parking does not outweigh its benefits. If you think I am absolutely incorrect here, feel free to correct me. I might have missed something!

@MartinBennett-rs6thrasher 23 күн бұрын
@@iainhay2823 If they are telling you to apply parking brake whilst in drive (automatic transmission) then that is not good instruction. In most instances you are more likely to be 'shunted' soon after stopping suddenly. Under normal driving conditions when stopping, even selecting neutral, then applying a parking brake, is causing too much complexity impeding moving away again quickly, especially for a learner (with automatic transmission).

you need to drive, simply drive. What kills the Diesel engine is dusting the oil whilst City-only driving and long term oil changes.. The oil collects all the dust like a cleaning mop. It is so easy, just change the oil more frequently, even use a cheap one having the right specs. This transferes most cloggy prits and sludge out. Slowly driving as in a city will warm up the engine better than idling infront of the door. Most engines are so big and efficient, they will not reach 40⁰ after 15mins idling, some have an installed co-heater (a Zuheizer🔥) in order to reach temperature or using late ignition to warm up the catalysts… just drive…
