It means that the atom has n no. Of protons and electrons. As protons are inside the nucleus whereas electrons are in their orbits. For ex: Na (sodium) has got atomic number 11 which means 11 electrons and 11 protons. Protons never change on the other hand, electrons are lost or gained to make themselves stable. 2 8 1, 1 electron in valance shell, it can be given to be stable.
