What’s actually annoying is that it isn’t really .28 as pi is an irrational number and cannot be precisely expressed.

All of this was "explained" to me when I was in the 10th grade. I didn't get it. Explanation lacked something. Then it was explained again in College. I memorized something that got me thru. Then it was explained again by a VERY GOOD math treacher in Grad School. I remembered only what I had previously memorized and got thru with no "picture" in my mind to match what I was doing. This, for the first time in 50 years, makes it utterly clear. Thankfully, I no longer use math everyday in my work...but it will be nice to die knowing that one more mystery has been removed. THANK YOU.

A circle has 360 degrees because 360 is a multiple of 12 and thus easier to divide into halves, thirds, fourths, sixths and even twelfths. The same reason a day is divided into 24 hours, an hour into 60 minutes and a minute into 60 seconds. All of these are multiples of 12 and share the property of easy fractions. The Sumerians were the first civilization to realize this iirc. It isn't arbitrary.

@thegreatquidam8885 жыл бұрын
This is a nice explanation. I have a quibble with your result at the end. In fact, it's a little more, shall we say, significant than that as it involves an important concept that people learning scientific thinking and mathematical applications sometimes find challenging. As you state in the video, 3.14 is an approximation for Pi, which, for those who may be unfamiliar, can't be represented exactly as a decimal because it is infinitely long and never settles into a repeating pattern. Because you chose an approximation to two places beyond the decimal point, any calculation using it can only be relied upon to be accurate to the same level of approximation, in this case hundredths of a degree. Writing a result out to four places beyond the decimal requires a level of precision that doesn't exist in your calculation, and is therefore actually incorrect. The argument that the answer as given is still correct because it exists within the set of possible solutions covered by the approximation implies a misunderstanding of the concepts of accuracy, precision, and approximation, ie. significant digits. The correct answer for the equation depicted here, given a value of 3.14 for Pi, would be 57.32 degrees. Using the closest approximation of Pi to four places beyond the decimal point, 3.1416, yields 57.2956 degrees. To get the approximation of 57.2958 degrees at the end of your video you would have had to have used an approximation precise to at least five places beyond the decimal point, or hundred-thousandths; or have used a calculator without any consideration for significant digits, yet you keep stating a value of 3.14 for Pi. In effect, the calculation you carry out is not the one depicted in the video. Your exposition makes for a very clear explanation of the relationship between radians and degrees, and would be great for anyone beginning trigonometry, but your calculations are not consistent with the content, and the mishandling of approximation and significant digits is downright misleading.
