One thing I LOVE about Httyd, is that it shows that the dragons ARE ANIMALS. They have fear aggression when cornered, they can recognize good vs bad intentions, and generally act like an animal would in certain situations. Toothless took time to trust Hiccup, and only stopped showing agression (growling) when Hiccup got rid of his knife. Toothless knows that he was vunerable atm because of his tail, and even though Hiccup is small and weak he still had a weapon. He also has a PERSONALITY. Like pets do. He's playfull, he's sassy and he's occaionally clumsy. HE UNDERSTANDS APOLOGIES. Another example, when the Monsrtus Nightmare burst out of his cage, he first roared, then he quickly went aorund the arena to try and find a potential exit. He shot fire at the adult vikings, since THEY put him in there. Only once he realized he couldn't get out, did he start stalking towards Hiccup. Pay attention to their EYES. The eyes are very telling. Bigger, rounder, softer eyes/pupils meant their calmer, but like when Stoick slammed his hammer onto the cage, it startled the Monstrus Nightmare and he attacked, its pupils immediatly turning to slits.

14:28 There where no dragons during ancient civilizations but there was a reason why they where depicted in mythology. Its documented that ancient greeks and part of medieval Europe found dinosaur bones and they try to recreate them without prior knowledge about dinosaurs, so, they just gather all the fossiles they found and put them together, some of these ended up being bones from pterodactyl and land predators, starting the legends of giant reptiles with wings. This is also might be the reason why different civilizations portrait dragons in different ways, they probably just found dinosaur fossiles and try to recreate them as well, the reason why chinesse dragons are like serpents, viking dragons don't have front legs and so on.

this series is my special interest so its always so fun to see new people getting into it. its perfectly fine to watch all three movies first before the tv shows, though I highly recommend them. there are several short films taking place at various points including one about the bonenapper. then there are the first two shows dragons riders of berk and defenders of berk, these follow the Vikings getting used to living with the dragons during the first year and introduces some new dragons and villains. then theres race to the edge, it has 6 seasons and has one of the best animated villains I've ever seen so I highly recommend it however you do need to watch the two prior series for it to make sense. it introduces a ton of new dragons and human antagonists and does a hell of a lot of world building, its set about a year or two before the second movie however the show aired after the 2nd movie released so its fine to watch it after. then theres a newer show called the nine realms (I think) which is probable left better unwatched cuz its hated by a lot of fans. theres also a show for little kids but no one really talks about it.

Quick little fun fact/ fan theory Hiccup lost his foot because Toothless bit it off saving him. In the slow motion scene where Hiccup is falling into the fire and Toothless is flying to save him, Hiccups left foot (The one he lost) is higher up than the right foot and Toothless is opening his mouth (with teeth out), before the scene cut away. Toothless bit onto the foot to catch Hiccup, but in the heat moment bit too hard and Hiccup lost most of his foot as a result. Making them have to remove his foot and replace it, with his now iconic peg leg.
