Winning an F1 Championship requires more than clocking the fastest laps; It requires ”race craft,” which includes knowing when the racing line isn’t the key to victory. Today we're going to explain why the racing line isn't necessarily the best way to win a race.

Great Scott! Didn't expect to find you here. I would like to hear your take on racecraft curbing ideal racing line (no pun intended), or sacrificing other conventional wisdoms about racing to gain track position. Your video on Verstappen's pace in wet touched upon this subject and it was eye-opening for a novice like me.

@@allensinho4 Both, rubber gets slippery when it's wet, so he didn't drive on the rubbered in part. And definitely, not as much spray and more downforce if you drive outside the traditional racing line. Not to forget, wet and dry lines are very common practice in racing, but since wet lines come across the dry (rubbered) line, there are tricky little slippery spots which make them hard to master. Both lewis and max are known to be good drivers in the wet, and a well known F1 champion once said that wet driving separates the good from the great. I don't know how informed you are and maybe I'm preaching to the choir here 🤷🏼‍♂️.

When Senna first started racing in Europe, for an F3 team, a driver for the same team asked him how come, when it was raining, he drove in a different line than everyone else and still lapped at least one second faster than the rest. Senna explained to him that when the track was wet the usual racing line was covered in oil and rubber, making it much more slippery, which was why he would follow the line less used and was able to enjoy better grip than all others. I heard that the day after Senna died, in a Mexican TV show called "Caliente" where the host was interviewing people who, at one time or another" had had contact with Senna, and the explanation was given by a Mexican driver that drove for the first team Senna ever drove for in Europe.

Hamilton usually lies about tires to throw opponents off, all opponents are constantly listening on each other's radio thus have to speak in code. there was some mention about it in the behind the scenes video of red bull's HQ. (example he went radio silent when his tires were completely shredded and punctured in the last lap, yet he won with 3 wheels, google British Grand Prix 2020 Hamilton last lap)

I’m an artist and and an ex-racer and the perfect racing line concept is similar to when you draw stylised humans/animals. You need to be very familiar with the anatomy before you can stylise convincingly. Same with racing. You still need to know the perfect racing line of by heart to be able to adjust yours intuitively according to external conditions. This is exactly why coaches are always teaching newbies about the racing line in detail at first.

I remember Michael Shumacher back in the day on a rainy GP, the rain broke with about 20 laps to go and many teams pulled into the pits to switch back to the dry tires but he stayed out and swerved to hit a few puddles on each lap to keep the rain tires cool enough to not degrade on the warming tarmac and finished on the rain tires (in first place). Eh, I wouldn't say it's that much of a balance. Going a little slow will result in your altitude dropping, which will increase your speed, making you go back up again. It's how elliptical orbits go. For the ISS to stay in orbit, they actually have a HUGE velocity range. Anywhere from escape velocity at their altitude, to deorbit velocity at their altitude. Of course they want to be in a specific orbit, but they still have some wiggle room. The ISS actually boosts itself periodically, to keep the orbit in check, because it still experiences some aerodynamic drag.

Years ago I had an old timer tell me “slow is smooth, smooth is fast”. It wasn’t able to understand that from an analytical standpoint until I felt it on my way to my first wins. Watch Hamilton drive, slow small changes and consistently fast lap times. Really wish I could explain verbally but the feeling is amazing!

It's all about time scales. A sharp input is capable of momentarily exceeding the available grip, breaking static traction often in an unrecoverable way and sending you into a spin while taking a corner much slower than is otherwise possible. That old timer is 100% on point.

My experience was amateur stock car at the local circuit for a few years. It was a quarter-mile oval but it was trickier than it looked and the line you took might depend on how hot it was that day. I did a lot of door handle to door handle racing with one guy in an eagle talon against my 4th gen Prelude. I could never pull ahead of him if he kept the inside line but if I waited behind him, I knew his car would push up to the wall toward the end of the race on his hot tires. Having a nice racing line is alright when you're not in a pack and you get the line you get. You just have to be a ruthless opportunist if you want to win and take things right to the knife edge of control and hold it there for the duration. There's a mental state and you have to be decisive on frighteningly short notice and make the right decisions more than wrong ones. Even so, you can be doing everything right and it can still all go pear-shaped. Then when you're rolled over and crashing with a dislocated limb and you realize you have absolutely nothing to say about what's happening, that's interesting. Your brain seems to speed up and you can process data very quickly and this distorts time. Fascinating.

Plus, racing line is different because the exit speed is more important. Hamiltons line has more higher exit speed compared to theoretical line.

You left out one of the most important factors of cornering in F1. That is getting on the power early is one of the most important factors regarding fast lap times. Drivers will sacrifice their corner speed to get on the throttle early. This is HUGE in F1. Ignoring this in the video seems like an oversight.

He kind of did towards the end. He mentions that minimise steering duration by having a sharp apex which in turn give throttle earlier/longer.

@@JLneonhug One passing mention of it... when it's the primary reason for late apex corning for faster lap times. Thanks for pointing that out, but it should have gotten MUCH more discussion than a subtle mention.

@@ATX_Engineer If we want to go technical, its the ability of the tyres and aerodynamics to be able to handle the cornering speeds, as such it creates this late apex method of cornering. Some argue its the aero and tyres, less of the "technique" of late apex and more of tyre understanding/management (in modern F1 anyway).

You're conflating racing line and geometric line. The racing line is the optimal path around a track, by definition it is the only way to win a race.

This, the Racing line is by definition the fastest way around the track for your car. Different cars may have different optimal (racing) lines.

I remember when F1 cars weren't so long and wide that fighting and defending for position was exciting. The cars were nimble and microturns didn't almost always cause oversteer or crashes in some cases.

Senna: Don't look at the apex of a turn, look beyond to your exit line and see the apex in your peripheral vision. When you do that you can cut a smoother arc thru the turn.

9:02 yeah those are just a couple examples of two drivers battling, but what if you had a 2 second lead over the entire grid with only a few laps remaining? Then the racing line is what allows you to win the race.

I always loved the idea of taking a deeper (theoretically slower) line to have a higher exit speed before a straight where you can use your higher speed to overtake someone who took the proper racing line.
