You forgot to mention that Mercedes is still doing the spare parts for the very first models! A mercedes manager once replied with: "we still dont know" as a reporter asked him whats the average lifespawn of an unimog.

In fact, Mercedes still manufactures parts for every single vehicle they have ever made - and if they have to do it by hand for just one person. You can even still buy every Mercedes vehicle ever brand new (for insane prices, of course) - including the first ever car.

"... never heard of Unimog.." In Germany you see these bad bois everywhere, specially in rural areas. They use them in agriculture outfitted with various farm equipment, transporting wood from forests,as vehicles for firefighters and Search/Rescue teams,in the construction sector, pretty much every municipal district has 1-2 that they use as snow blowers during winter (specially in more alpine areas like Bavaria) or to disperse salt on the roads,to prevent black ice. They even use them at airports,to pull commercial airline jets.

Plenty of jeeps running around with mog axles sitting under them. They’re quite common in the North American off-road community. Many of those jeep owners may have a mog just for screwing around with. Since I was a little kid, I have always thought they were cool. I just cant say that they are at the top of my list, if that is the kind of vehicle I am talking about getting I would probably lean toward a bobbed M35. Ive used their axles several times though, yet that might even be fading in popularity. It seems like more and more people are just making a hybrid axles with portal hubs rather than working around the hurdles with an old military axle.

Sometimes we would see them headed up the mountain about dawn for their shift. Sometimes in the afternoon we’d see them coming back down the mountain. They were very fond of schnapps. The driver for their crew said that their Unimog had 3 ranges of 9 gears in each range. Jokes on you, I had a pneumatic Lego (Technic) set of a Unimog from years back. I *have* heard of it! and honestly one of the cooler technic sets I've ever had. I think it was a Christmas gift and it took me a few days to build, but it was worth it. The suspension was incredible intricate, and the pneumatic system was super fun to figure out how it all worked--the A design was a crane arm with a grabber, the pneumatics powered two joints on the arm and the grabber, and the B design was a plow that rotated slightly side to side. And it actually had a "PTO," or the lego version of it, where the motor powered a mechanical system at each end. The plow could move up and down, the crane arm could swivel, and there was a winch that could be operated, on both models I believe

I always wanted one. Too bad the logistics of having one in the US is absurd. They don't like simple vehicles here. The more problematic and harder to fix (aka forced to take it to the dealership for repairs) the better. It's sad. Nothing here seems to be built to last anymore. I work at Case New Holland Agriculture and we basically buy South Korean tractors to assemble and sell them as "American made" for astounding upcharges. It's sad how things are simply built to fail or be made cheaply as possible.

They do most snow plowing in my hometown, the plowing that the multicars can't do and what's too little to break out a John Deere is done by the Unimog. Also my dad was a cook in the German army and once his friends were out late on field exercise so he stole a Unimog and delivered about 300 liters of soup to that unit. What he told me about it, specifically a version with low range gears making a total of 16 gears, was that it was significantly more difficult to drive than his Golf mk2.
