I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Sphere, is in fact, Belly/Sphere, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, Belly plus Sphere. Sphere is not a digestive system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Belly system made useful by the Belly's pepsin, pancreatic enzymes and vital bodily components comprising a full DS as defined by RSB. Many organic users run a modified version of the Belly system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Belly which is widely used today is often called “Sphere”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the Belly system, developed by the Belly Project. There really is a Sphere, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Sphere is the stomach fat: the circumference of the system that allocates the organ’s energy build up to the other muscles that you run. The kernel is an essential part of a digestive system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete digestive system. Sphere is normally used in combination with the Belly digestive system: the whole system is basically Belly with Sphere added, or Belly/Sphere. All the so-called “Sphere” distributions are really distributions of Belly/Sphere.

I think she was aiming at his infatuation with freedom and wanted to tell him that there is no perfect absolute freedom. Even if you achieved freedom for humans you still have suffering and slavery for billions of other animals. But the thing is many people (including RMS) don't think other species are as important as humans. I don't think we are more important, day we'll go extinct like dinosaurs, and the sad thing is we are going to pull majority of other species to demise with us. So, I think she was trying to get some attention to wider philosophical question of freedom and also animal rights. RMS is a highly intelligent person but his view of freedom is limited, and hers is more universal, it includes humans and also other animal species.

She was possibly aiming at his campaigning for human freedom in general, she wanted to extend it to the question of animal rights. In the core of his public work is believe in freedom in general, and freedom in computing is closely tied to it. So if you see connection between freedom in computing and general human freedom, you can easily extend it to question of freedom of animals. Maybe she wanted to point out that even if you achieve freedom in computing, even freedom for humans - it is still half-victory because you didn't achieve absolute freedom, there still will be billions of animals (pigs, chickens...) suffering and enslaved. So if one's mind isn't closed down and narrow one can in fact be interested in computing freedom, human freedom and absolute freedom and think about them all.

Interesting conversation. I don't particularly like Richard Stallman, but he did fairly well here. It is true animals don't have rights. The so called "animal rights movement" is actually just the anti-human, anti-human rights, anti-reason movement. Humans are the reasoning animal. That is what makes us different. Those who hate reason, hate objective truth, hate reality are trying to destroy humans.

There's tons of scientific evidence nowadays that show that many animals have a rather complex emotional system and show an understanding of themselves and the world around them. Many animals, including the pigs that we eat, show clear signs of self-awareness and even have developed theory of mind, which basically means that they understand that there's other beings than them and that they have their own thought process that is different from their own. These are incredibly complex things (relatively, in the context of the animal kingdom), and the idea that animals don't have any "reasoning" is simply anti-science. It's a clear contradiction with what we know about animals today. Having said that, the animal activist in this video is clearly out-of-line. Even if she's right, which as Stallman points out is a presumption that puts the entire "debate" into a false starting point to begin with, then still this is not the place to do it. Stallman is here on this event specifically to talk about digital rights. The activist making this about animal rights, is just as obnoxious as barging into this event and saying he's a hypocrite for talking about digital freedom while there's still thousands of people that are falsely imprisoned in Guatemala (random example). Or even more fitting, if RMS would go down to an animal rights rally, and call them hypocrites for caring about animals but not about free software. Even if the activist is right, this is not the place to take up that debate.

Love it when people try to play the technicality game, she knows that he was talking about freedom from a software perspective, but she clearly wanted to probe his beliefs on other ideas.

In ancient Rome, the word persona (Latin) or prosopon (πρόσωπον; Greek) originally referred to the masks worn by actors on stage. The various masks represented the various "personae" in the stage play. A person is a being that has certain capacities or attributes such as reason, morality, consciousness or self-consciousness, and being a part of a culturally established form of social relations such as kinship, ownership of property, or legal responsibility. Now tell me, how comes that self-aware animals with highly developed communication, social interactions and intellect, sometimes way beyond our capacities, are not persons?

RMS didn't deserve to be prodded in this manner and it was completely inappropriate, however there underlying is of consumption that is one and the same: the blind consumption of anything is more or less bad -- know your food and know your software. He also has the right to not care about animal welfare the same way others have the right to not care about non-free software.

I see in a lot of comments common ground is that a woman came to debate a whole different issue at a free software event and therefore she is wrong. Well, if you think broadly enough, you'll understand it is not quite a different issue. Let's set aside question about if animals are persons or not and look at less "controversial" side. Animal agriculture is largely controlled by huge corporations that have powerful lobbies in the governments, that are heavily monopolized and that have a devastating effect on the environment. Isn't that what Stallman is saying to be strongly against? The guy is just stuck in his own theories and literally refuses to discover something new. If you look at his other interviews, he also has hard time with facing challenging arguments, even when they are related to strictly his topic. It is as if he was afraid his theory would fully collapse because of one solid argument he would not be ready to contradict. It happens to smart people, I saw it. Anyway, I used to admire Stallman, but now I rather feel sorry for him.

you can be against Monsanto and co without falling into the mystical hippie vegan trap. you don't have to believe in animal rights to realise that climate change can be harmful to humans. The woman posed her question as an ethical one, and stallmans answer limited itself to that ground
