For the graphic would it not be better to do the circular crop after the depth mapping? I imagine that if you crop after depth mapping you would be able to get the depth mapping png with a transparent background so that when you upload the image to emboss it you don’t need to use the magic wand tool to get rid of the square background. I suspect that when you turn the graphic into a depth map, the transparency of the image gets messed up which is why you end up with black corners that you have to cut off. Love your videos, even though I’m mostly just here for fountain pens :)

I tried that but xtool wouldn't recognize it as a proper 3d depth map afterwards. Perhaps the software I used to do the circular crop changed some small details in the file so it wouldn't recognize it. Possibly another program would be better. Would be handy if they integrated that functionality into the XCS software package to do it all in one spot.

You know what, I thought I would try it again after your comment and it worked this time! Either it messed up the first time or now its fixed, either way it works. I'll pin the comment hoping others will see that's the better way to do it now

I am a pen nerd, but I always enjoy the laser videos as well. Fascinating stuff. 👍

These laser projects look like a lot of fun. I would be a menace if I owned one. Friends and family guaranteed to get tired of me handing them coins with my doodles on them. 😂

You can do a circular mask inside XCS instead of doing the background removal.

Okay, this is crazy.. I've been watching you for a while, since I got fascinated with fountain pens (though mostly the ink, to be honest), and like you, am an engineer so love all the technical aspects and would like some precision in the industry (like nib line width). I also like to make stuff, so been eyeing the F1 Ultra for a month or two.. and two days ago, I finally pulled the trigger and ordered one. My first test was going to be one of the brass or steel coin blanks I got, and was playing with etching with my diode laser. It shows up Saturday. So this couldn't have been better timed. Looking for some cool, fun things to do with the F1 when it arrives (and how I'm going to recoup the money spent, at least a little).

hello, first of all, great video! I'd like to start with an open question: I'm a beginner in laser cutting but not in 3d printing, I've had an Ultimaker for 5-7 years and I'm happy with it, but now I have a new project that will require the creation of a lot of money coin and only metal money coin, I was wondering if you had any advice on the machine that would be best suited to my needs given my level. once again, thank you for this video

Maybe someone has asked already, if so I apologize, but why not use the circular mask in XCS instead of a crop feature in another app?
@Doodlebud25 күн бұрын
@@bigbangthierrygaming7700 Circular mask will work. I didn't notice that feature in XCS. My bad

Greetings Doooooodlebud. Great demonstration! One question is that do you need a fume extractor? Let's say we only work on metals. Does the laser make toxic gas or a strong smell?
@DoodlebudАй бұрын
I'm running a fume extraction system they xTool. There are options to exhaust it outside like I'm currently doing, or into a filter system. I have a video coming soon talking about that. Fumes from different materials can potentially be toxic.

How much does it cost( The laser machine)? How long did it take to make that that engraved joker face?
@DoodlebudАй бұрын
I left a link to the machine the description which will give you the current promo price they have going on. The graphic file took a couple minutes make then engraving as I showed in the video takes 7-4 hrs depending on your settings. I maxed it out so about 7hrs per side

Question - isn't there quite a bit of lead in brass? Doesn't that mean you just filled your room with some unknown lead compound vapor?
@DoodlebudАй бұрын
@@larsgottlieb All depends on the brass. Some does some doesn't. I have the test swabs but didn't swab these. Even if there is some the laser has an exhaust system which either vents outdoors or into a filtration system to eliminate exposure to fumes. So it's all good either way
