sometimes I think I developed my deep and abiding hatred of the way maths is taught in schools completely independently and that watching these videos only primed me to think mathematically, and then I come back to rewatch them because we're covering logarithms in class and my teacher refuses to tell me how to conceptualise them so I can't actually figure out how to work with them and I realise. ah. these videos did, in fact, give me a frame to work within that let me still love mathematics while not hating myself for hating how it's taught. so thanks! for influencing me more than I can probably ever fully realise

+Echo TheEcho How parabolas, circles, and ellipses are related. I never knew exactly "what" a parabola was, but hearing it explained as an ellipse with one focus at infinity is a lot more intuitive. Also, how to draw a cardioid using dots and a compass.
@firesong78258 жыл бұрын
DaffyDaffyDaffy33322 yeah... and that totally tells you how the numbers in it work, or how it works at all.
@eggynack8 жыл бұрын
+Echo TheEcho Not everything in math is the underlying construction, or the numbers. Sometimes it's more like this, about the relations between various things, and what things mean on a fundamental level. I can tell you that a given parabola can be defined by the function x^2=y, and that's great. Important information to know. But what that parabola means, how it relates to an ellipse, how it fits as a conic section, hell, why we actually care about it, that really matters too. And, in some ways, it matters more. You're talking about facts and figures, but that's math on the simplest and most elementary level. Math at the highest levels is about a true state of understanding. Not only being able to graph the parabola, but also being able to prove things about the parabola, and prove things using the parabola. Knowing the what without knowing the why is as unimportant in math as it is in history. A function on its own might as well be a single date associated with a single event, something which makes you ask, "So what?" Knowing the why without knowing the what is in some ways better, but it leaves you unable to dig into the nitty gritty aspects of the math, and push forth into the beautiful parts. You need both things, and this video helps you understand the why, if not the what.

I started to wonder if she was just rambling on but she made it relate able to the topic one way or another .It inspired me to always think outside of the box and to not always look at something one way. Probably no one's gonna see this but this video affected me so much. I was in middle school when it came out and was an avid fan of Vi hart. I had an atrocious math teacher who frustrated me to no end but her videos rekindled my enjoyment of math in general. Her way of rebelling against the school system intellectually really resonated with me. This video in particular inspired me to look at why the school system wasn't working for me, and gave me the courage to back sass my teacher. One day she was so tired of my shenanigans she yelled "DO YOU WANT TO TEACH THIS CLASS" I said yes and stood up to explain the lesson. I did a poor job of it but I am now in college to become a physics teacher so I like to think that my skills have improved. Keep on keeping on Vi

Thanks to this video I started doodling cardiods all the time in the margins of my papers and twelve years later I'm making my living on technical illustrations for audio-related things and turns out cardiods are quite popular over there! 😄 Which sounds like I'm only giving it value now that it's earned me money and prestige but I really enjoy it when something small that you don't expect to have any meaningful impact (doodles in the margins) shows up and it's like, OH I understand this.

Every time I think about Algebra, I remember I need to finish all that homework from two weeks ago if I want to get an A. Then I realize it's summer break and I already got straight A's.

This was very entertaining and educational at the same time. Nice job, Vi. I still have no idea though why everyone in the comments section are complaining about how deep the vocabulary she uses is. I can clearly and fluently understand what she is saying.

So how do you know so much if you never pay attention in math class ? Ive spent my life drawing in math and i don't know what your talking about

Emmanuel Exhume i googled her. she and her father mathematicians i thought these videos were about not paying attention in class like i did but it turns out she doesn't listen in class because she's smarter than the teacher. i hate math but she makes want to go learn it.
@esper46058 жыл бұрын
it's not that she was smarter, but that she, at the time when she was in that class, was more eager and inspired when it comes to mathematics than the teacher(s) she worked with, whom of which were basically working a dead-end job where educating children was "more about money and prestige than wanting to become a better person" So instead of listening to him ramble about simple shit, she took the time to look into it herself.

Say you're me in your math class and your teacher's droning on and on about maths- then she stops, stares at you and says "who are you? What have you done with ?!" You (or I, since you're me) laugh maniacally and say: "Ha! I have trapped them in a hypothetical situation in which I have replaced them! Now everything they have- including family and friends- is mine!" Silently you metaphorically bang on the walls of your hypothetical prison. But metaphorically hitting something doesn't involve putting any force on it so the walls never break and you can never escape... 😈

Now there is purpose to all my boring classes. To doodle. You gifted me that. Thank you 😊 I hate school. School makes my life feel pointless, and I am always bored. Every chance I get, I stay home from school. It feels like I achieve nothing by going there, and I wish I never had to go. I feel no motivation to go to school and learn things. It makes me feel sad. But now, I at least have something to do. Thank you.

You mentioned here that the school system doesn't promote mathematical thinking, which is decidedly true. Thankfully I found this series 9 years ago and I turned completely around on math, from being fairly bad at it in middle school to working towards a minor in mathematics in college. Genuinely, I'm certain this series is what got me to think mathematically, to play around with ideas and connect them together rather than memorize how to calculate some things. Your silly doodles in math class were a serious life changer for me. Thank you.

Wow. Some of that just went completely over my head. It was fun, though.

Yes, you have an interesting artistic approach to mathematics, or perhaps art is all about mathematics, and what we perceive as beautiful or interesting is really a manifestation of our curiosity for the patterns, like wondering "Why does this happens consistently, and how can so many conclusions be drawn from a number of parabolas, hyperbolas, lines and dots." That curiosity is also all about shapes and mathematics and the way particles interact into chemicals and generate electro-magnetic currents in our brains with the flow of blood, and that flow of blood was geometrically sorted out by evolution to give us the best advantage for survival, so on, so forth. So really mathematics is ingrained into the very perception of mathematics, truly a proof of the real "existence" of numbers in our universe, although not quite in the same way we would say that particles, energy and waves exist. A quick analysis of how patterns can be arranged with the different ways to connect dots can really lead to a major brainstorming on many different subjects, thank you for making this video!
