The only thing propping Doom 2 up is the fact that the handful of extra enemies they added are *really* useful for map designers outside of id. ... Also, TNT Evilution exists.

After the humiliation of the every Doom game so far i expect to see something like: "Doom 2016 is the worst game in existence", or "Eternal is the shame of Doom legacy " or something next. And the plot twist will be that Doom 3 is the best, and the internet explodes once more with controversy and fights over opinions

I liked 2016 a lot, actually. Kind of a weird middle-ground between the realistic military shooters of the early 2010s and the (now) modern shooters that are willing to experiment. I mean, it was in development for about a decade. Eternal though... woof. That one's super weird. It's far too difficult and loves spamming enemies at you, and forces you to swap weapons CONSTANTLY. There's also a lot of bloat in the game. I mean, there are three to four different melee attacks. Why not just one? Definitely feels like they they felt they had to one-up the original by adding more, more more. Oh, and the story is lame and doesn't fit the gameplay in my opinion. Like they wanted to make a separate game but had to connect it to the Doom IP. Doom 3 is fine. It's not perfect, but it has its moments. I wanna play Resurrection of Evil one day.

@@GermanPeter Thank you, thats how I feel about 2016 & Eternal. LOVE 2016, but Eternal was weird and bloated. Still fun thoe, but feels like someones Doom fanfic.
@lainamitclaire6 ай бұрын
@@GermanPeter Very well said. Eternal is the kind of game whose design I feel is just extremely bloated. A bunch of incredibly unnecessary gameplay mechanics exist in Doom Eternal purely because it artificially inflates the APM required to play the game. Doom isn't more fun when you're having to play Simon Says every two seconds in a fight, it's just tedious. It's a crutch for lack of encounter design and map design. It would be fine if ammo pools were larger, because it would let the weapons stand out more, but as it stands the primary fires in Doom Eternal are actually the *secondary* fires, you actually are supposed to be starting, solving, and ending most fights with the secondary fires of your shotgun, and your machine gun. All the other weapons are just low ammo count chaff meant to finish off enemies, and the various, unnecessary additions like the flame belch, grenades, blood punch, crucible, and so on are just extensions of that flawed design philosophy. It's a game that could have been sooooooo much better, and instead it lost the magic of what made not only Doom good, but especially what freedom made Doom 2016 so great. It's frustrating!
@DanoLefourbe6 ай бұрын
@@GermanPeter So, I LOVE Eternal, but I see how those points might annoy somebody, totally fair. It IS weird. For the several melee attacks, it's part of the "panic economy" that's at the core of the gameplay, since each gives a different ressource. That's the purpose of having several of them. Each fight is like a frantic puzzle, where you're constantly low on health, on armor, on ammo, and have to prioritize on what to regenerate with what you have and what you're facing. Personally I loved it because of how unique it was with its ressource management. I didn't find it more difficult than 2016 though, just differently paced. With maybe a little bit too much awkward platforming. To each his own, and I can totally understand people prefering 2016. it is very different, and your points are fair.
@GermanPeter6 ай бұрын
@@DanoLefourbe My issue with the melee attacks is just that there are too many. You have the regular fist, which is 100% useless now unless you're executing someone. But you also have the chainsaw to execute enemies. You also have a blood punch to instakill enemies. There's also Berserk, which makes your punch an instakill attack too. And then later, you get the Crucible, which is the same as Berserk, just with ammo. Why not cut out the middle man and ONLY have the Crucible? Why so many different ways to kill enemies from up close? I completely forgot about the blood punch halfway through. And the fact you constantly run out of ammo...it's too much for me. I couldn't enjoy my time with the game, because I was just constantly twitching around, running from enemy to enemy just so I could get a few bullets back. I find it ironic that the game which builds up the Doom Slayer as the ultimate power fantasy is the game in which I felt LESS powerful.

@GermanPeter6 ай бұрын
I mean, you gotta point out these shortcomings, even if they're easily explained. Because even despite them, a game can still be good. For instance, and this may surprise you - I prefer SMB1 over SMB3 precisely BECAUSE it's simpler. You go from A to B without detours and that's all I want from a Mario game. And in the end, I did say that while Doom is dated, it's still pretty darn good and you can have a great time if you put yourself in the right mindset. I'd never say that about a game like, I dunno, TFClassic.

@@GermanPeter Which is totally a fair take to have, no qualms at all, everything made by humans has flaws, but also is a distinct statement vs. saying it sucks, that's all. Honestly, Doom 1 is my favourite - not perfect, but favourite - classic Doom game. It's the one that I'm most inclined to revisit. Yeah the Super Shot Gun is cool, and Doom 64 does have a great atmosphere, but every time I've revisited them the allure of said features fades the more I play. Doom 1 is so charming in its simplicity that it feels so easy to come back to even after a while (secret hunting is also slightly less frustrating in Doom 1). Every time I pick up Doom 2 or 64 again I feel like I have to relearn a lot to get to the point of enjoying the gameplay. I like how Doom 1 is broken up into episodes. Each section ramps up as you advance, and its nice that the start of a new episode - usually - feels like a breather. The episode system provides predictable spots to rest, whereas calmer levels in the other games come and go as they please. It's also really cool how each episode has its own mood and aesthetic, and how they evolve from each other.

The music choices feel more engaging than Doom 2 to me, and while yes, the gameplay is more interesting in 2, at the same time 1 just has this... charm I can't let go of. Scrounging around for secrets in the cramped passageways, blowing up hordes of imps when its really not necessary to bother with the rocket launcher in the first place... it could just be my noob brain saying "Doom 1 easier = more fun" but I think it also nails a better atmosphere than 2 does, if not for the environments then for the character of Doomguy himself.

Sometimes I advocate for No Rest For The Living becoming the standard entry point for any newcomer but that one has the unfair advantage of coming out years later and being developed with a lot more playtesting. Not to mention it definitely doesn't have that early id energy??? (can't verify that point about playtesting, but there is NO WAY it is that well-oiled without professional QA. It has some modern Valve-level quality to it)

Yes, after e2m2 everything goes downhill. But... maybe that's intentional? After all, you're descending into Hell, the place of eternal punishment. Here's another identical wave! With the same shotgun! Is your enjoyment diminishing? Why, yes, Doomguy gets the eternal punishment and you, the player, start to feel it. ...or I'm overthinking a little.

Kinda funny, for me it's the opposite. Doom 1 is the most boring in episode one (barring e1m1). All the levels feel pretty much exactly the same. Episode 2 and 3 are lot more enjoyable, probably due to more enemies, weapons, and the fact they're generally more challenging since episode 1 was basically a tutorial, and intentionally watered down to convince people to buy the rest of the game. Doom 1 is a masterpiece of its time, and a clear evolution from Wolfenstein 3d, but it still carries some of wolf 3d limitations. OK. Doom has like 12 enemies, but in reality it has 3 Melee Hit scan Single projectile Mancubus, double projectile Arch vile, revives enemies, causes you to explode if you are in his sight Revenant, homing missiles. Pain elemental, summons lost souls. DOOM 1 has NONE of those gimmicks. They have those 3 enemies, some with different properties. For example. Imp Flying double imp Walking octuple imp. Missile super imp Then it has Bullet boy 8 bullet boy Bullet brain And them Pinky Semi transparent Pinky Semi dormant pinky that sometimes remembers you exist and flies. Then The WEAPON problem So... you got some tanky enemies. Anything that is not shotgunner, imp or zombie. Anything beyond that requires missiles, or plasma. There is a problem here. Most of the game will give you bullets and shotgun ammo. The chaingunis the best solution when you got no rockets or plasma.... But what about the shotgun? It suckjs. IT JUST SUCKS. doom shotgun is great to kill anything weaker than a cacodemon, And as expected the game will start throwing you more and more cacos and barons. so you DEPEND on saving missiles. and forget plasma, it's kinda scarce in Doom 1. You can save it for the big guys, Like barons. But you won't waste plasma in cacos. Doom 2 beyond the new enemies, introduced the magestic SUPER SHOTGUN. It's not only better than the shotgun, its most of the times better than the chaingun. Sometimes, its even preferable to the rocket launcher. It's a godsend. But this is doom 1. You are stuck with shotgunning most of the game or burning your entire chaingun arsenal to not die of tedium. About the level design... Hard disagree. Doom 2 has better action maps, and far more fun for coop. Doom 1 had the mood. That claustrophobic design is GREAT it makes you feel cornered in a game hwere in reality there is only one enemy that can corner you... or its invisible cousin.

DOOM, fun tech demo, more realized by fan map packs and even some of the original team when they made newer maps for the old games. It's a technical marvel for the time.

I tought that i was the only one that find E1 as the peak experience, and that the quality slowly lowers from that point. I love the first half of E2, but almost none of E3. And also don't like much the levels from doom 2. For me, doom E1 style maps with doom 2 monsters, is peak design

I literally do lol I know you're meant to make the enemies infight, I just don't think it makes for an interesting level. It's just a bunch of waiting. The exit also sucks, the only gimmick is that you need the automap to see where the first key is. I also hate it because it's the last map of console Doom and makes for an EXTREMELY anticlimactic ending.

Wow. Who'd have guessed that the first installment in a videogame series would be outshined by its sequels. It's almost like as technology advances and companies receive feedback they're able to produce higher quality games.

@@CRCR0201 Honestly I think Doom's map design is generally better than Doom 2's. I mean, both have a few standouts and a few stinkers, don't get me wrong, but on average Doom's are better.
@AlphaEnt26 ай бұрын
The difference between doom1 and doom 2 is one year and thousands of people's feedback. The engine is mostly the samewith few additions and the mappers got some experience from previous attempts. So if anything, doom may not be perfect, but it is demn close to perfection. Also, considering the time when the game came out, there was nothing like it. I was 3 when the game came out, played it for the first time at 10. The jump from nes/snes to pc, I wish some people had that experience nowadays, but considering the high fidelity of modern games, i doubt that change could be reached anytime soon, i still have 50 or so years of technological progress to live.
