Glad y’all like the music I did for this project! I originally made it just for fun, but I still used instruments in such a way that it would be easy to implement into a Romhack (No new PCM samples, for instance) I’m happy to see that it’s become the backdrop to the awesome engineering work that the rest of the team has put into it. ^^

Thanks for the spotlight on your channel, it’s an honor :) To address your complaint, I gave fitting real map names into the menu my best effort, but it wasn't working out due to screen space constraints. There's even less space left in the Load Game menu, which also displays map information, so fitting longer sentences there was even more problematic. So I went with a less pretty, but more concise option there. Maybe I'll figure a better one some day.

Why not use the short map names like E1M1, E1M2 and so on? Most Doom fans know these names better than the full names anyway, like "E1M1: Hangar". It's just E1M1 to most people (Episode 1 Map 1). Great work btw. Edit: I see you've now added map names in the v1.1 update!

Really impressive work! This version rivals if not surpasses the Jaguar port! If it had been the official release back in the day? The 32X story might've turned out a little differently. Addendum- The things being done by the indy community is incredible. This is yet more proof that Sega really knew how to build hardware if only they would have taken the time necessary things could have been so much better. If I remember correctly John Carmack worked on this version of Doom and I believe he could have replicated this if he wasn't forced into the release on Christmas box.

Such a great effort. To the original developers' credit though, it is much easier nowadays to fully utilize the hardware than it was back then. Tooling is much better today. Better compilers, communication between developers, easy access to documentation and Q&A on the Internet. Also keep in mind how much faster machines are now, which means fast compilation instead of having to wait a long time to rebuild an entire ROM, which would then have to be flash to an EEPROM. That required one heck of a long development cycle. I would not slight developer's past efforts in comparison to what ROM hackers are accomplishing today, because it is so much easier to get every bit out of the hardware now then it was back then. The comparison is unfair IMO.
@Mittens04073 жыл бұрын
The reason that the original version was so poor was due to it being rushed out the door, not lack of documentation or tools. I'm pretty sure the original devs working for Sega had much easier access to proper documentation than these guys, the 32x isn't as widely understood as the Genesis by homebrewers. Also this isn't a romhack of the 32x version, it's based off the Jaguar source.
@edwest22633 жыл бұрын
@@Mittens0407 Re-read my post. You couldn't just Google info back then. Also the tools nowadays allow for much faster development. Probably sub 1s compile time versus an hour or few back then. There's no comparison.

I just played this for the first time and it's pretty incredible. The latest release fixes a lot of the issues too, such as level names being present in the level select. The default resolution is also set without the borders. I'm blown away that the 32X was capable of this all along. Back in the day I had SNES and my cousin had a Genesis & 32X. We both had Doom and argued over which version was better. I argued the SNES had all 3 episodes, more levels enemies and weapons, and that music was a million times better. Had this been what we got on 32X back then, I would not have had that same argument!

I also think it depends on the music style - the FM chipset in the Genesis is great for rock soundtracks, but not as good for classical sounding music where the sample-based sound-chip in the SNES excels. Both systems could produce some great music if used well of course.

Generally yes, byt GEMS could actually produce some good results in the hands of people who actually knew what they were doing, like Tommy Tallarico. Unfortunately, most didn't. :( With the original version of Doom 32X, they just run the PC MIDI files through the GEMS auto-arranger (MIDI to FM converter) and never manually cleaned up/corrected the results. They were planning to, but ran out of time before the release date, shipping the game with the "placeholder" soundtrack.
