That is truly hard for sure. Trying to beat the map the way the 'key' to the map suggests is stupid hard. I usually grab the blue key and then back up into the door jam and take my lumps as I kill the Knights. That room is by far the hardest in this map. The Arachnotrons can be in a word alignment when they stop to shoot at you though and that makes t that room a bit of a crap shoot. The dart room is easy, just wait like he did.

It's not that bad I just finished it yesterday, took me about 2 hours (on the hardest difficulty too). Note that I don't have a lot of experience with the N64 controller, so I was pressing L + R together constantly when trying to strafe, which ruined a lot of the attempts. The stick on the controller I have is also kind of loose. I had a really good attempt early on when I killed all 4 Hell Knights but died to the last Hell Knight's projectile. And the yellow key room is a joke, did it with 2 hp. The worst thing is, you lose the damn Features menu when you turn off the console.

Map 32: Hectic, the closest thing to an impossible level to get 300% on. It’s difficult, it’s frustrating, but that Supercharge may come in handy if you can grab it. Especially after getting all three key cards. It’s unfair in its item traps, yes, but otherwise it’s a very good challenge, especially at the start of the game. Well done, BMD

Absolutely incredible techinque for the soul sphere. However to those who are finding this level extremely hard, or just not finishable, there's an easier way to finish this level. First grab the yellow key with the dart traps. Now the key to this glitch is the soul sphere. Grab the soul sphere, then before the crushing ceiling animation ends, go and get the blue and red keys. If you do this successfully before the crushing ceiling animation ends, you'll neither have to face the arachnotrons, nor will you have to face the hell knights. Because in Doom 64 only one script can run at a time. Therefore the scripts that change both the blue and red key rooms do not activate before the crushing ceiling animation ends. You will not get all the kills with this method (because the rooms with the arachnos and hell knights will get locked), but you will get all three keys and exit the level easily. Without doing the hardest combat sections of this level.

Very nice run there! One thing worth noting about the dart room, it's the only one that is unaffected by the Supercharge glitch, also the way to travel it with as little damage as possible is to go through the middle most of the time and wait until all the other tiles around you are fully up, so they serve as a shield. The darts are activated by action lines at each corner of each tile if I'm not mistaken. Once I got the hang of that room, I went fully through the middle, and yes I had to wait a lot until the tiles were positioned the way I wanted, but it was worth it!

It is possible to get the armor. You have to time it correctly when the crushing ceiling from the mega sphere is going. You must exit the map before the crushers finish otherwise you will die. Basically the script for the telefrag can't initiate until the ceiling script finishes.
@BigMacDavis2 жыл бұрын
Yup, you're exactly right. The Doom Wiki was helpful in explaining that to me. I decided NOT to do that though - I decided not to break the scripts (because you can do that in several other levels too), because I think it's manipulating the game, I wanna play the way they intended it. Another strat for the room with the dart traps is to carefully move forward until Doomguy's origin barely crosses the linedef between platforms, stop, and let the darts whiz past you. Doing this, you only need to worry about the darts in front of and behind you, which will both miss if you cross the linedef while the platforms are as low as possible. Funny thing about the death traps in this map; the original hardware couldn't run multiple scripts, so if you managed to snag the Soul Sphere without getting stuck, you could zoom through and grab the keys, rocket launcher, and armor and then rush to the blocked exit. You had to be quick, because the game would know if you took the armor and run that script and kill you if you take too long.

When the crusher trap is active, none of the other traps will activate (aside from the Yellow Key room), so you can easily snag the red and blue keys. Even then, after a lot of quicksave/reloading, I remember getting to the end of Hectic and thinking "Was that it? Wow! That was NOT worth the effort!". Then a bit later I paused the game and noticed a new menu option that wasn't there before featuring cheats. "Ahhhh, that's what beating Hectic did! OK, I suppose it was perhaps a little bit worth it then!". Still, what a painful level! So you taught me 3 new things in this video. First, I didn't know you could pick up that armour. Second, I had no idea it was possible to get that soulsphere. And third, I didn't know there was a way to get through the arrow room while taking so little damage. I usually just end up quicksaving and running for it, hoping for the best. Keep on kicking ass, BMD. 😁

Nathan, hello, my good friend, thanks for the comment. I'm glad you learned a few things about this map, I know I sure did, after a couple hours grinding it out. I think, back in the day in 1997, probably 99% of all gamers had no idea this secret level even existed, but even back then, the internet existed, and I'm sure the solution was posted to message boards and the like. Actually, there is a way to earn the mega Armor using a glitch. In fact, when you are grabbing the Supercharge the "crush" script is run. During the execution of the script, the execution of other new scripts are suspeded until the end of the first. That means, tha tthe Telefrag script WON'T be executed until the end of the "Crushing" script. In a realistic approach, that means that you must grab the Supercharge when you already opened the 3 colored doors, to have time to grab the Mega armor and exit using the alternate exit... If you wait until the end of the "crushing" script, doomguy will be trapped again but not telefragged. However, I could not remember if you can actually flip the switch or not. Hope this message will reach you BMD. Take care and Happy New year.
@BigMacDavis Жыл бұрын
Yes, thanks to the Doom Wiki, I know about this scripting exploit. I didn't do it for the Walkthrough because you're not intended to even grab it in the first place. But thanks for the info. :)

This map is the of the filthiest traps I have seen. Like shooting fish in a barrel. The Hellknight bridge was just obnoxious.
@BigMacDavis2 жыл бұрын
It really is obnoxious. That's a really good word for it. The knock-back from the Rocket Launcher and Hell Knight projectiles make it SO TOUGH!!
@rodylermglez2 жыл бұрын
This map is a huge kick in the teeth for it being only just the second map you ever play, specially the Blue Key room because of the rocket launcher recoil throwing you down to the inescapable pit. The Yellow Key room isn't so bad if you are patient.
@BigMacDavis2 жыл бұрын
Exactly that reason, my friend, yup. It is SO HARD, but also, the Hell Knight projectiles can knock you back too, into the pit. With no way out. Ugh....

At 2:38, talk about a good tactical advantage of the enemy! I'm sure that the enemy is happy about this. However, good use of your legs for starters. At 4:10, good strategy! It's better than trying to "balance" yourself on the small platforms. At 6:40, your strategy is good when you don't want to be a colander.

I need to replay this map to check whether or not I agree with your take that it becomes annoying after first time... But on my first playthrough - Hectic instantly made me love Doom 64. And later on it became my second favourite Classic Doom game (if we can call it that... we can, can't we?), just after Plutonia. I just love the atmosphere and the weirdness of it. And it's a rare case where I love the way it changed some designs, like Doom 64 Pinkies - they're great! It's just so unique, just like this map... Or so I remember. I really need to play it again.
@BigMacDavis2 жыл бұрын
I guess what I mean by annoying and frustrating is this: the gimmick of being trapped on a tiny bridge, with nowhere to run, and the crusher guarding the Blue Key, and the projectiles can push you off the bridge and the knock-back from the Rocket Launcher can too, all of that.... overstays its welcome. Once I beat it the first time, it's a chore to do it again. But yes, there is NO DENYING how amazing tis game is. Absolutely agree there.

Wow, four attempts is bloody amazing for this 84574rD of a level, BMD. Nice one!
@BigMacDavis2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Honestly and truthfully, I thought it would take me 10-20 attempts to beat this level, specifically only for the Hell Knight bridge. All three of my outtakes were on the bridge, btw.
@Mike1064ab16 күн бұрын
If you pick up the soul sphere first the traps in the blue and red key rooms will be temporarily DISABLED. So pick those keys up first. The traps will resume once the crushing ceiling event is done. The reason for this is only one event can occur at a time in a level. Unfortunately the traps in the yellow key room work differently so you will have to do that room normally. This trick will make the most annoying parts of the level MUCH easier!
@ImDemonAlchemist Жыл бұрын
I just did this map (for the second time I think) and I just strafed back and forth to fight the Hell Knights, definitely harder than the way you did it, but I didn't have as much health going into the level.
@clarencegutsy7309 Жыл бұрын
The funniest part is how if you grab the Supercharge and fall in to the pit you naturally turn around to exit only to see the ceiling crusher progressively moving to you. Boy, they had fun being dicks on this one.

I dont rememeber well, but i think there is a password to see a walktrough of this level. You need to let the game run without pushing any key like 4 times in the introduction of the game. Thats a 64 version. I can be wrong tho

I finally played this map on my N64, and came to a nasty realization: there is no save option before you start this one. If you die, you lose your extra health and armour. And if you quit the game, you need to start from Staging Area again. Nasty!

My issue with this is that I REPEATEDLY fall into the lava pits when I'm not strafing. It seems to happen almost every time even when I'm pretty sure I'm not getting hit. I think some of it is knockback from the Hell Knights but I'm not sure. I can't stand still and tank 4 of them so I don't know WTF to do. UPDATE: I've tried many many more times. I have no idea what the deal is. My guy just runs headfirst into the lava almost every time. I'm so pissed off but its kind of funny at the same time.
@BigMacDavis Жыл бұрын
This fight is the worst in all Doom 64. My only suggestion is to put your back to the locked door and hope for low damage rolls from the Hell Knights. Even then, it will be VERY tricky to do, but at least you won't fall into the pit anymore.
@keithwatson3953 Жыл бұрын
@@BigMacDavis I pulled it off! I recently pulled off a full completion of Classic Doom so this is my next project. I at least have some skills lol! think I was subconsciously telling myself to forget about the lava and just fight those bastards the way I used to. I think I beat this when I was a kid (showing my age). I forgot about some of the differences. The weapons feel much more powerful than classic Doom. Maybe the secrets are harder to find? The worse part about the hell knight room is the rocket launcher's newly introduced knockback. If there was one "feature" I'd ever remove from Doom 64, it'll be the weapon knockback. Almost feels like Doomguy's wearing worn out shoes with no traction xD
@demogorgonzola2 жыл бұрын
The bridge wouldn't be that bad if not for the recoil the RL produces in D64 and locking yourself in that "doorframe" is not a bad way to negate this ... even if it resulted in some heavy health loss, a death pit is still worse :)
@BigMacDavis2 жыл бұрын
Oh yes. Ohhhh yes. In my previous three outtakes, I would run back and forth on the bridge and shooting, and that resulted in my death, so during this run, I said screw it and basically just used the door as a brace from the recoil, lol. I suffered heavy health loss but it was better than dying, lol.
