We've just become so complacent as gamers to the low standards of gameplay design that from the outset, Doom Eternal looks like insurmountable, but is not.

Fighting the Marauder pretty much is a Dark Souls experience. When I first fought him I died over and over but by the end of the game I'd learned how to take them out relatively quickly, they never stopped being a challenge but I learned how to deal with that challenge and move on. That's what a good game does. It's not like the rest of the game was a cake walk, if you mismanaged your ammo and other resources you're fucking dead, different demons require different tactics and in that respect the Marauder is no different. Fuck knows how these idiots got through the rest of the game if they couldn't be bothered to actually think about what they're doing.

I was under a suspension of disbelief for the longest time watching them but you helped me realize that to feel badass, you even have to beat the worst version of yourself. @@underthemayoindeed this is quite a good video. It cleared up some opinions i had on the marauder. I too enjoy the marauder fights now, and i wouldn't have it any other way. Also i've been playing on nightmare since the beginning for the best experience. I also did the extra life mode on nightmare, and i have the phobos skin now. I have all the skins for the weapons too. This is honestly the best game this year so far, and the only game i can see competing with it is cyberpunk 2077.

Something I think a lot of people overlook with the Marauder is that his stagger windows are actually super generous. You don't have to hit him only when his eyes flash green: You can hit him at any point in the melee attack and unless you hit him at the very end of it, you'll probably get a stagger. Also grenades are a great way to reclaim the tempo of a Marauder fight if things are turning bad

The thing that threw me off is when the game first explains it to you, makes it seem like you're supposed to always stand 5-6 feet away in the middle and maintain that the whole time. By the time I finished the game, that's totally off. Run from him most of the time and collect health / ammo and bait him to you when he gets close enough shoot out some grenades and once his eye light up use the ballista / super shotgun. If he summons the wolf deal with that first then back on him. You can also explode rockets by him at a distance. This technique makes him much easier to manage than trying to stay closer to him. They key is to STAY AWAY and watch him come to you. Get in hits then run again. You can also keep nailing him with grenades / rockets next to him at a distance and just keep getting more ammo rinse / repeat if you want to cheese it.

Versok I actually hate fighting Archy more and kept a healthy stack nukes ready for when he arrived I found the Marauders kinda nice, it’s odd everyone thinks the BFG is a single shot rocket launcher when you’re first instructed to kill 60 enemies, and your intro is simply to take out 15+ enemies per shot which you can reset the checkpoint to farm that spot for he 60 kills with practically no issue, never once did I use the BFG in any of the doom games even Doom 3 to kill 1 enemy unless it was a boss or the cyber demon things Doom resurrection brought to the table Hell Pinkies are the marauders of Doom 2016 for me especially when spawning in groups and usually worth using BFG ammo on Tip: run around until you find Archy and reset checkpoint once he is found to take him out quickly before he spawns too many

I find the encounter with him to be like Dark Souls. You've got to learn his movements, learn when to attack and when to dodge and in a way when to parry his attack to stagger him and get a second attack in. Still hard due to surrounding enemies and or map layout but very rewarding.

I never had a problem with him. You gotta manage other demons. I usually kill the heavy demons before tackling the maurader, depending on who I'm up against. Literally after the first fight (dying once) I was learning how he played and he never became a problem. Sorry a pretty nice enemy ruined the game for you

I often get shot with his rockets because of that and it destroys my hp.

I started playing Doom Eternal this week for the first time. I have only just rediscovered my love for gaming again after about a 10 year break. This game is the only one i've played where if i get destroyed on a difficult area or challenge, i actually laugh. I know everything in this game can be overcome by smart play, and skill. I love how challenging this game is, and it is merciless if you play sloppy or without game smarts. Finding this channel has only increased my appreciation for the game, and i can't wait to complete it to go back through again on a higher difficulty.

Great video. Your comment at the end about 2016 Doom is a great point, this game is different, an evolution, much more tactical. During my first few encounters with the Marauder I found it frustrating too, but I think it's great, it comes at a point in the game where you are likely starting to feel a bit too comfortable with the gameplay and it shakes things up, and like you say plays a bit more like another Doom Slayer. Its a great fast paced challenge and gets you thinking more and panicking. When you get used to the timing of counters it's not really even that hard. Depending on the situation you can save him for the end of a battle or take care of him first. I always fight him in the way the tutorial shows you but like you have shown there are different ways to hurt him. The dog I admit is a little annoying but its so easy to kill its not worth talking about really.

I didn't play this game when it came out cuz my PC wasn't strong enough but I started playing it a lil while ago and I just beat, today, the toughest Master Level on Ultra-Nightmare and nothing feels as good as getting better at a game and understanding a games mechanics to the point where you're able to overcome the most difficult challenges that are so hard that you literally shake of adrenaline when you beat them. @@lionheartking5867 It's not that he's challenging. Actually he's not challenging at all. It's just that when you encounter him it just kills the whole flow. You're tearing through demons, switching weapons around, ripping them in half with your own hands. Now, here comes the Marauder with his shield. You have to hit him when his guard is down, so you have to wait around for that. That alone would've been ok...you get over it eventually. But then you also have to deal with the other enemies while the Marauder is also attacking you, while he is summoning that annoying dog that chases you around. It's just an overall annoyance.

Ice grenade, double grenade, two RPGs, a hit from the ballista and end it with the chain gun with the shield. You can take him out in about 10-15 seconds with that combo when you master it. @Exzavier the poor game design of the marauder is usually seen is his ironic unpredictability and poorly made attack ranges. For example: I have had experiences where the marauder will launch the plasma wave at near point blank, I dodge backwards to avoid it, and then get shot with his shotgun, despite that being supposedly wrong due to the tip page. It should have been the opposite. For another example I have attacked the marauder while his eyes were glowing green, only to have him dodge out of the way in a psuedo omae wa mu. If the marauder was scripted to be what it was supposed to be, I doubt most people would have a problem with this enemy, as he would be just like any other super heavy. The fixes I would propose if doom eternal was a beta game that was intent on fixing itself are as follows Clear up when he can use certain attacks based on range to player. This is how it's supposed to work, but it does not function correctly with that in mind Lower his health by maybe 25% nothing too substantial, but enough to balance out how much time you must focus him down. Make his dog only trigger if the player hits him. You should never punish a player for something outside their conventional control Fix the tip page to follow his ingame function

The fact that the answer is obviously "yes" really is an indictment of the game as a whole. If the Marauder is the only enemy who can present any modicum of challenge to the player, what is the point of having the other enemies in the first place?

He played and streamed it on console, because he couldn't replace some parts for his computer in time for release due to the lockdowns. Still, I think in that case he should've just not bothered, but you know what people like that are like, gotta rush something out no matter how bad or wrong it is.

I was getting livid the more he complained about the low ammo count. how do you just shoot fodder demons with your shotgun AND ROCKET LAUNCHER AND THEN COMPLAIN ABOUT NOT HAVING ENOUGH AMMO THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE GAME?!

The Marauder is awesome. I like him because it really tests your reflexes and built up skill as you need to multitask between fighting him and the 25 other Heavies and fodder demons. He makes the game so much more challenging.
