I think the salient point mayo has nailed here is that there is no empirically measurable difference in how you deal with a marauder compared to any other enemy challenge in DE. UEG and other reviewers claiming the marauder is SOOO different is simply untrue. This is just DSP style whining because the marauder requires slightly different tactics and they just can't adapt. All the controversy surrounding DE is coming from those who have failed to adapt to its unique and vastly improved combat style, no matter what excuses they give. Just my arm chair psychology - maybe I'm wrong but those who think gameplay comes to a halt simply because a marauder shows up have big trouble with dynamically adapting their combat plan...

It's not that gameplay comes to a halt that makes him unfun what makes him unfun is the wait to kill aspect sure you can run around and ignore him and eat dog to the ass every 3 secs because you get punished for other enemies hitting him, also waiting for a weak point to start glowing or expose itself is slow boss design and its rarely fun to deal with, biggest problem with marauder is remove the shield and he is like any other DOOM demon dumb fairly slow and limited in its attacks, so even if you could confidently shit all over it you have to wait for 1 of 4 attacks to do so, I can't name another DOOM enemy makes me wait for it to be dumb and expose itself and given the lore why would he ever drop his shield? Just makes them look like dumb ai that has a follow relentlessly command, their health pool is also tiny due to the shield maining cycling them is s breeeze and while satisfying to q swap and kill one while it stands there defenceless it isn't necessarily engaging or challenging to do.

All enemies in Doom Eternal are there to test different skills. Fodder demons like imps and gargoyles keep you on your toes and make sure that you're always alert. On higher difficulty they can be as deadly as the bigger bois if you let them flank you in groups. The more stationary fodder enemies like riot soldiers, cyber zombies and yellow-brain guys should be seen as turrets or obstacles that you need to avoid or summarily delete when you have breathing room. They can make 'safe' spaces more chaotic if left to fester. Mancubi, spider bois, cacos and revenants all test your accuracy and priorities. Use the right tools in your kit to shut them down and take them out when the opportunity arises. Leave them with their own tools and they can make the skirmish erratic. Carcasses and whiplashes should be taken very seriously. They will both make your life a living hell if ignored since they can stun lock you or block you at inopportune times, allowing the harder-hitting bois to make short work of you. Both don't have too much health but they're not the easiest to target or get to, so use high DPS weapons on them when given the opportunity. Meathook is your best friend. Hellknights, fire knights, barons and even prowlers will fuck your shit up if they corner you. Know the arena you're in and don't let them force you into a part of the map where your movement is hindered. Kite them or avoid them until the time is right to unload a falter combo onto them. Tyrants, Doom Hunters and Cyber Mancubi are bullet sponges with lots of resistance. Crack their shells with faltering attacks (like bloodpunching the cyber bois) to create openings for combos. Be prepared to let loose all of that ammo you've been saving up. Archviles are the actual worst enemy in the game (Still love them). Save at least 1 pip of your crucible for them because they are no joke to deal with. Otherwise, ice grenades are your best friend and quick-switch combos are a must to eat at their obnoxious health pool. Marauders just take your entire skillset and puts it up against a specific set of rules. Learn those rules, master your own skillset, and try not to let him play his game. Avoid fighting him in chaotic situations and deal with other high priority threats before focusing him down. Falter his ass to hell and don't tunnel-vision on him too hard or else you will get your ass chomped by whatever fodder he keeps spawning.

It's possible he was originally a boss at some point in development, before being retooled into a more Baron-type enemy. Besides, it's not the first time: The first Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind were actually referred to as commanders, or something to that effect, then became the standard bosses, followed by the Icon of Sin having showed up 3 different times, with 3 different names. The Doom 4 Cyberdemon is weirdly the only boss to have a personal grievance with the Slayer, and not be reused.

The codex about the Marauder states that they were Night Sentinel Warriors who fought alongside the Slayer before they fell in battle and subsequently resurrected by the forces of He'll into Marauders. So they do personally know the Slayer, but there isn't one of them. That was just the only one that opened a dialogue with him and not outright attack.

In few versions of demon/hell creation myths most of the highest ranked demons are fallen angels. But usually the only fallen angel in hell is Satan who was renamed Lucifer in Milton's Paradise Falls, and even then demons are a chaotic bunch, Satan/Lucifer is barely recognized as their leader as he's more recognized as their creator who they can choose to obey. Demons are antithetical to Angels who are mostly 100% obedient to their creator (or about 95% loyal given all the variations I mentioned).

There’s something really special about the marauder. You can’t mow him down like fodder, apply a bomb or snipe shot onto a weak point to neuter him like revs, mancubus, etc, and you can’t just lay into him like a cyber demon or baron. The marauder isn’t some mindless monster recklessly throwing everything it has at you until one of you dies, his fight is personal, one on one. He demands your focus and your rage in a beautiful dance of danger- one misstep and either combatant could falter.

I really like fighting Tyrants, Barons and Marauders for one reason: It feels like a boss battle every time i fight them, so naturally, killing them feels really good. Also, if you want advice on killing Barons, spam them with ice bombs and the Super Shotgun. You should either freeze them or bait their slam ability, giving you time to shoot them with the Shotgun. And that motherfucker kills them really fast. If not, just use Crucible

Shield Chaingun is really nice for the Baron. Open up the shield to protect from stray projectiles so you can focus him down, using the shield throw at the end to demons that rush you and give yourself an opening to glory kill the Baron and get the hell out.

I normally just do the SSG/Balista dance on them. Baron's aren't that big a deal they're just bullet sponges, same as tyrants. Honestly I'm nor really sure what enemy I'd say gives me a hard time anymore. I've basically developed tactics for almost everything now. At one point I would have said Mancubus because they hit hard and are tanky bois. Maybe early on in cultist base I still think they're a pain. But once you get the SSG and Ballista Mancu's aren't that big a deal either. Maybe Carcass because they're annoying, I still don't like them. But I wouldn't really say they give me trouble.

My only REAL issues with him is that sometimes when you shoot him while his eyes glow green, he still carries on with his attack even though he clearly took damage. It's rare, but it has happened enough for me to notice and it has killed me before. That isn't a mechanical issue though, and is likely just a glitch. The other issue is a personal preference thing in his 'rules': the wolf that spawns when his shield is shot. This is a-okay when I fuck up and shoot his shield, but enemies being able to trigger it by shooting his shield is just cheap to me because it means that even if you manage to get the timing down on when and when not to shoot him, he can still punish you for a mistake you didn't make. The only reason I don't consider it a big deal is because the wolf is a little bitch that dies in a handful of shots, but it's still cheap in my opinion.

I've noticed this. Then I saw the "splash" from my super shotgun and noticed that I shot too early or too late and not enough pellets landed on him. Literally my own footage told me to get good. We need even more variants of the Marauder. Hell I would love a fight where literally a squad of marauders ambush you as you chase a bunch of imps who were running away from you. They lead you to a arena, the Marauders slam the doors shut and a crowd of imps cheer as 9+ Marauder variations fight you. The imps trying to jump in and help the Marauders can be ammo. That will be an amazing fight. Ones with balls and chains trying to slow you down. Others with hammers trying to deny your escape routes by doing aoe slams. Ones with spears trying to skewer you from long range. Duel wielding one hand weapons trying to tear you into pieces. Mixed with standard axe wielders. All with the same shields mechanics, speed, aggressiveness and double barrel shotguns. It would be a good fight. Lore wise too. Demons are tired of your shit and they going to get rid of you from their perceptive. The "Finally my time is now, rip and tear!" point of view from yourself.

Probably a shitshow considering enemy fire can also trigger the dog to come out so there would likely be a chain of projectiles into dog summons until the screen is full of them. That'd still be fun though, as the first slayer gate showed with imps, once you can dance around one of them then you can deal with 40. Oh and you'd get ping ponged around the stage if you got tagged by a shotgun

There's a big difference between an objective fact and a subjective opinion, and from what I can tell, the objective fact is that the marauder is one of the best enemies in the game for testing the skills that the game has tried to teach you over the course of the campaign. Once you have mastered the game to such a point that you find the marauder easy, that's when you know you need to bump the up the difficulty, or start imposing limitations on yourself for a challenge.

At first glance anyone who played 2016 saw the max ammo and I guarantee you every single one of them was like "what the fuck is this shit." Low ammo just might be universally hated on its own. As one of the people whose issue was an unclear tutorial, I'll say up front I have zero beef with Doom Eternal having tutorials - sure, I might have switched them off if I'd known it was an option, but I thought it was neat. I'm not terribly 'elitist' when it comes to this sort of thing. However, defending the wording by saying that it doesn't tell you Not to do something... is weak. I like the marauder now, I find him very easy to deal with given I've had enough practice - no beef there whatsoever anymore. But... nah man, the tutorial is still horribly worded. It reads like it's saying "Don't get too close, don't get too far away, stick at mid-range." I fully support you defending the mechanics of the marauder being fair, but when I backed up and he started flinging big ol' beams at me, my assumption was "Oh, I'm too far, I should get closer" because that's what the game friggin said to do. The tutorial defines 'too far' as the state in which he attacks you with projectiles; implying that it's beyond 'mid range'. Yeah, the game doesn't tell you NOT to run away, but it DOES tell you that there is a punishment for doing so; projectile spam. When you have only a couple of seconds in the midst of the adrenaline rush to process this information, the average player isn't gonna be sitting there smoking a pipe like "Ah yes, elementary; just because the game implies there is a consequence to long distances, doesn't mean I ought not do this thing I've been explicitly warned not to do because it might yield positive results'. They're going to be sitting there like "Cool, not too close, not too far, stick in mid and wait for him to expose himself." Sure, dude's a cake-walk once you've figured him out - but... instructions unclear. I humbly disagree with that one element of your defense. Everything else? Keep up the good work.

I love the Marauder. I agree with virtually every point you make about how his design is complimentary to the game, and a fun edition to the demon line up. But the tutorial *is* misleading. With every other demon tutorial, the game is explicitly telling you the optimal way to deal with that particular demon (shoot x with the precision bolt, or grenade a cacodemon mouth, etc). When I saw "keep him at mid-range" written in bold green text on the Marauder's tutorial screen, I assumed this was the optimal way to defeat him. It reads as though if he does any of his other attacks, you aren't engaging with him optimally. I quickly discovered this wasn't the case, but I think the tutorial could use some work to better fall in line with the other demon tutorials. I don't find it surprising at all that people play stupid against him. The game sets up a precedent for how tutorials function, and then breaks that precedent by simply describing attack patterns rather than offering the optimal way to deal with the demon. As you pointed out, having a more comprehensive tutorial would get too complex quickly. I genuinely think that a whole heap of confusion could be saved simply by removing the green bolding in the Marauder's tutorial. This simple change helps to implicitly state the Marauder has no "traditional" weak point and instead requires more complex engagement (compared to simply shooting a weak point). Doom eternal is my first fps. I can confidently tell you that every tutorial does not give the most optimal way to deal with the demons. At the beginning I'd just try to do exactly what the tutorials tell me, but by the end of the game the only demon I still fought the way the tutorial taught me was the cacodemon. Their are tons of more efficient ways to kill the demons in doom eternal than the tutorial said. The marauder is just harder that's it

I finally got eternal yesterday and just got to Urdak last night. I use your keybinds with some modifications and have really enjoyed the game playing first time on Ultra violence. It's alot of fun, I love getting lost in an arena, utilising all the toys the game offers you in conjunction with the enemy types. I hate the archville and the Marauders... But in the right way because it is so satisfying to watch the Doom blade punch right through them. It is fun to one up them and out wit what feels like genuinely intelligent enemies. I have died many times on my first playthrough with many more to come but each time I failed I got a smidgen better and that's what Doom is about, moreover life is about. Basically, I adore this game now and your videos are both entertaining and helpful.

"I don't know what's going on." I do. Time is fuzzy on the internet. You are never able to know someone's timeline with relation to a thing for certain unless they outright tell you. Example: You said 'they'd had the game for a month', but there's plenty of late-adopters in that group; people who may have owned it for a month, but just played it, and people who just played it. And time on the internet is fuzzy for them, too. When they get around to watching a review, it may as well have come out yesterday, or today. So when they play the game, their hate for Marauder is fresh. If they watch the review first, their biases are primed before they even play. Either way, you're going to end up with a portion of the people who seem salty being that way because they literally only just became salty, but it's going to blur together with the people who have stayed salty since the beginning. Many of those original salty people will have moved on to other things or gotten over it by now, but that's just not the way it 'feels', y'know? Because your ability to perceive a userbase is can only account for so many. Time being fuzzy on the internet is sort of why I'm replying to a video that's half a year old as if it's brand new.

I feel like he really missed the point of why people think the tutorial is misleading. From the way it’s worded, it seems to imply that if he’s throwing projectiles, then the player is making a mistake and needs to get closer. The problem is that people will dash to get closer to him to try to get into the “mid range” the tutorial is referring to. When they do that, he also dashes toward them, and then they’re too close and he blasts them with the shotgun, which blows them backwards. People then dash backwards, panicking that they are too close now, after which he throws the projectiles, repeating the process all over again. I think another reason why people have such a problem with the Marauder is because you can’t just “brute force” him. With the other enemies, if you dump enough firepower into them, they’ll eventually die no matter what. You don’t HAVE to blood punch a cyber-mancubus, or destroy the arachnatron turret, or shoot a pinky in its back. With the Marauder, you have to exploit his weaknesses and play around him. You don’t even have the BFG, chainsaw, or crucible to fall back on.

Advice for fighting Marauder in a pool of demons: Ignore him... for the moment. If he comes at you from a blind corner, have that SSG ready by switching to it intermittently during the fight and rely on your reflexes. Mine aren't so bad that him striking me from out of the blue isn't such a concern.

It's a secret battle, it ain't easy, and it ain't checkas. Be creative, load on ammo and armor and take him out. Once you get down his fight pattern you can easily dispose of him in 15 seconds or so. I did so on Ultra Violence

At first, I had a completely difficult time with the Marauder. I eventually got the hang of it and now I can take him out. However, I’m not a big fan of him. Fact is he’s a fantastic boss. Exactly what you’d be looking for in one. As a regular enemy, I see why lots of people would hate him. It isn’t because he “sucks” or they “suck” it’s because unless you absolutely learn the pattern, it’s obnoxious. Also, there’s basically only two weapons you can use on him, ballista and shotgun/super shotgun, if you don't count grenades. Every other weapon can damage every other enemy, but these weapons, including bfg and crucible, are useless on the Marauder. You can only have a fight with him if you follow the pattern. I put this comment up the day this video was posted and I've noticed there's no comments yet and only a few likes. That tells me that people know what I've said is true, but don't want to admit it. Doom Eternal is a great game, but we don't have to be fanboys and pretend everything in it, including Marauder, is perfect.

I'd have been completely fine with him if i could delete him with a crucible charge. I really only use crucible for Archviles as it is, because they need to die immediately.

rocket launcher and stickybombs also are good to chip his health waiting for an opening to make your own opening. if you time a bfg just right it absolutley shreds him, otherwise i have used the bfg before just to have him distracted on it so i can then begin dealing damage to his back, or to just clear the playspace so you have a 1v1. just because ssg ballista is the meta does not mean it's the only option. The bfg and crucible are hard to pull off because it cheapens the experience of fighting an "equal" if you can just 1 shot him like any other enemy type. on that he isnt just an average enemy type, he's practically a miniboss whenever he shows up, so of course you have to fight him on his own terms. also about that ending section of your comment, you sound so far up your ass about your own opinion my guy. you are allowed to hate the marauder but jesus christ.

The comments section is mostly fanboys saying “Yay, we love marauder!” “Marauder #1” “If you don’t like marauder it’s because you suck!” I found that my comment took the wind out of their sails and frankly, they don’t know how to respond to it. They couldn’t just say “Get good” to me, since I stated something that quite frankly, we already know.

I think the "issue" with the marauders tutorial actually stems from the fact it is different than every other demon's tutorial. Before the marauder every tutorial pretty much told you everything there was to know about fighting the demon. At this point most players might assume that trying things outside of what you were told would be pointless. If there we not pop up text tutorials and it taught you through environments or gameplay i'd bet the marauder be less hated.

While I agree with all your points (and very much reside in the pro-marauder camp) I bear the opinion that the tutorial was misleading. Here's how I personally would have phrased the tutorial: "The Marauder is a *defensive powerhouse.* If you *rush* him, he uses his *shotgun.* If you *fire* at him, he *blocks your shots* (and summons a deadly *ally).* *Keep your distance,* dodge projectiles *as he runs toward you* and counter his attack when his *eyes flash green;* *falter him* for an additional opening."

I actually switched camps. I loved the marauder at first, the first couple of rounds were hella fun, But after that I realized I could (not that I had to but could) stand still and he would continue to attack me more frequently therefore I could stun him more frequently. Granted this doesn’t apply when he’s surrounded in enemies in some of the later stages, but still It might not even apply at all on some of the harder difficulties, but it’s worth mentioning

The Marauder away combo: Retreat back -> Bait him to run at you -> Eyes flash Green -> S-Shotgun, Ballista, S-Shotgun -> Repeat a few times -> Marauder has been exterminated.

It’s no doubt the Marauder is a difficult enemy, during my first playthrough he caused most of my deaths. But that doesn’t mean Marauder is a bad enemy design, in fact it makes the game more challenging and fun

I had a hard time with the Marauder, and that's what made it that satisfying to beat him. He made me think, which helped me improve. Humans are Antifragile, we ossify without stress. I thank the Marauder for fighting hard.

As someone who likes the Marauder, I do feel like the tutorial could have been worded better. But its something you figure out as you play. The designers also placed just the right amount of them in the game. Yes, he does alter the playstyle while hes out, but it doesn't happen often enough to ever become dull. Its always "Oh s*** a Marauder" and not "Not another one".

You know, I can accept that. He's a complex enemy that's hard to explain in 3 lines of tutorial text. The comment of "it could have been worded better but you figure it out" is an acceptable reality of that complexity, and probably intentional. Because like i put in my exaggeration example, spelling it out can take away all the fun. What's crazy is the ANGER that people have over it. You wouldn't believe the stuff I've seen getting filtered out in my comments.
