When you make a movie, or really any sort of form of media, there are some basic expectations people have of what they are going to see. These expectations must be met if you are going to make a good film. For a super hero movie, you need two things: Superhuman abilities, and people with those abilities preforming heroic acts and saving people from danger. For a Doom movie, you need a ton of action, and you need a one man army going into hell and shooting demons before punching the devil to death. And yet, people often think that these requirements are beneath their movie. Like having a super hero refuse to be a hero for most of the movie before killing half a city to save the world so they can ask philosophical questions about whether they should or shouldn't save people. Or having a Doomguy who fights metaphorical demons in a symbolic Hell. Pretending your movie is too important to deliver on the expectations because you think what you are going to deliver is so much better NEVER WORKS. It doesn't matter how philosophical your movie is, if it doesn't deliver on what people expected to see, it's going to tick them off.

*Doom slayer betrayed the space marines for his son and had the ability to not be corrupted because angles gave him that power and the demon betrayed him and turned his son into a huge demon and also Doom slayer was so good at killing demons that they had to lock him in a coffin but some demon was dumb enough to open it and they freed him. Let's list off wrong turns they made with this movie: 1) Doom was an action packed shooter, not a horror game. They tried to make a Horror movie. 2) They were too afraid to embrace the weirder moments in the game's story, even though those weird moments were fairly beloved. (like the actual name for the BFG, and the fact that they were dealing with demons, and how if I remember right Doomguy was motivated by the death of his pet rabbit) 3) They decided to make the Rock the bad guy. 4) They tried to take the game way too seriously. Doom is supposed to be action packed fun. It wasn't ever meant to be dark and unpleasant. Feel free to add any more I missed.

But when he got pinned down by the Empire he threw it overboard to avoid capture (I may have got some details here wrong but it was something like that). I think the reason Doom and other video game movies tend to get hated on so much by fans is because they expect it to be 100% like the game which is ridiculous when you really think about it. Making a video game movie 100% like the game it's based on is literally making a 2 hour long cutscene of the game to show in theaters.

I liked Doom. It was funny, had elements of horror and body-gore, didn't take itself too seriously, had the right amount of build-up, had the right amount of action, it had Richard Brake just being Richard Brake, etc. I actually enjoyed the Rock more in THIS movie more than any other role I've seen him in. I can appreciate action movies like this just like I can appreciate Masterpiece Theater productions. It's actually very well done for a "stupid action movie." I even own it. Yes. I own it.
