This is one overcrowded pit! This level demonstrates two peculiarities of the Doom engine, the first one being "disabled" Pain Elementals due to a very high number of Lost Souls on the map. This can be quite a valuable advantage, but can be easily lost, if you don't choose your battles carefully. Some source ports remove this limitation, though they usually offer a compat option to restore it. The other peculiarity can be observed around the BFG tower - the projectiles of Doom 2-specific monsters (Mancubi, in this case) can trigger line specials, causing the tower platform to lower. For more info on this, ask Decino to make a yellow-thumbnail analysis video ;)

This map is the first real skill check in Doom 2 to see if you can handle it on Nightmare. A whole host of factors come into play; from being the first map to showcase the upgrade in power lost souls get going from UV to N! turning them from a mild annoyance to an absolute menace, to how easy it is to get bogged down in that lift room and to top it all off the backtracking; which if you've been bogged down by the lift room, it's now likely that most of the level has now respawned. All these work in it's favour to make it a roadblock and the point where a lot of players throw in the towel. It's not uncommon to see empty Nightmare servers sitting on this level. While MAP04 is arguably harder and kills players far more often, it's short length ultimately allows players to stumble through even if they aren't cut out for it.

Congrats for inventing this new category : 100% kills, items, secrets and backtracking 🤣 Yes, I think this level gets really hard when you try to play it fast.
