The backstory of how this run was created is fascinating. Apparently, it took over a month to do this video because of the slow frame rate, using programming and a lot of ZM's labour to direct the rockets -- which is now reduced to 30 minutes of gameplay. If 30 min seems long to you, imagine the tedium of making it! I am still not 100% sure what's happening but it seems to be a way to bring about friendly fire from the revenants and cyberdemons.
@johns1625 Жыл бұрын
Revenants fire a honing missile 30% of the time and you can use them to cause other monsters to infight or kill them. This is 70k Revenant missiles all in one, so many in fact it doesn't even render the sprite of the missiles, so it looks invisible.

This is the thing I wondered about for a long time - why exactly Doom slows down when there are many objects present? I mean, what PC component is the bottleneck? When I checked Performance in Task Manager during a heavy slowdown, CPU utilization of Doom was around 10% and GPU's was even less.
@MagiCave3 жыл бұрын
Disclaimer: educated guess, could talk out of my ass, but I can only assume it's an engine limitation. While there could be enough power to handle the entire scene, the actual code that's tracking every single entity (rockets, monsters, player) struggles to keep up with a number of objects it wasn't supposed to handle, bogging down everything else happening in the engine, the elaboration of frames to send to your screen included. Basically, it's the computer that is waiting for the engine to produce frames, as opposed to the usual scenario where it's the engine that is waiting for your hardware to finish computing frames it wasn't able to elaborate quickly enough. Honestly, it's impressive that it was able to handle everything without crashing. Think about it, it was slow, yes, but the engine was still able to track every entity correctly and produce a result without errors! Most likely a feat made possible only thanks to the enhancements brought by a source port, the programmers in the Doom community are straight up archwizards. Makes me wonder if it would be possible to cook up a source port with enhanced object handling, wouldn't shock me, but probably a bigger waste of time than completing this map (using Zero's words lol IT WASN'T A WASTE OF TIME, ZERO!!)
@Shepardus3 жыл бұрын
Doom's game logic runs in a single thread, so it's unable to take full advantage of multi-core CPUs.
@masterneme3 жыл бұрын
It's a software problem, those objects are allocated in memory but there are so many of them that the engine needs several visits to RAM making timeframe higher and therefore lower framerate. That explains the low performance with low CPU utilization, because it's not a matter of power but about not taking advantage of Cache. Nowadays there are ways to solve this by using ECS or Particle Systems. I wonder if a Source Port could be modified with an ECS like flecs to support huge amounts of objects...

Given the nature of this run, let's consider the alternative: fisting the Cyberdemons. While punching one to death is easy with practice, this assumes a Berserk Pack, which this level doesn't provide. There's also the problem of punching them while the remaining 799 shoot rockets. Even if you don't get surrounded thanks to constant circling, you will eventually get damaged by splash damage from a Cyberdemon hitting another. But let's step outside the realm of sanity and/or pretend a TAS can avoid the rocket splash. Let's also pretend you can dodge rockets perfectly while holding the Fire button down, and never miss a punch. Doomguy punches at 123.5 punches per minute, dealing 2-20 damage without a Berserk Pack. At 11 damage on average, it takes almost exactly 3 minutes to kill a 4000 HP Cyberdemon. If 800 remain due to a good map start, that's 2400 minutes, or 60 hours. Slower than the 5 of this video, but faster than the 23 days that it takes due to lag. The 60 hours become 30 if every punch deals maximum damage, and then only 3 hours if we drop a Berserk Pack for Doomguy. A bargain! Of course, the amount of TASing required would be so large, you'd need a tool to do the TAS automatically, becoming a tool-assisted-tool-assisted-speedrun.
