A few other details about how the map works: The demon near the megasphere at the beginning makes you fire, there is no pacifist way past it (I hope!). Due to joined sectors to transmit sound, this guarantees that the archvile has heard you and will move around as it should when the switches are used later in the main area of the map. However, due to other sound blocking lines, the boss does NOT hear you and start spawning cubes. The boss can only activate after you cross the linedef of the first switch. The grid labelled E for East, N for North, W for West, S for South and 1,2,3,4 comprises an arrangement of rectangular structures I call 'dollbits', which are extremely versatile. Essentially dollbits allow one crushing instruction, using Action 141, to trigger several once-only actions on sectors of different tags at the same time, or with time delays. A dollbit is a crusher usually using action 141, at ceiling height 16 units with a barrel under it whose centre is exactly 143 units from the centre of a voodoo doll (so the edge of the doll is 127 away from the explosion) which gets pushed by the barrel over a linedef to carry out some W1 or WR action, with the doll being injured by 1 per cent and picking up a health bonus to cancel that out. Dollbits allow one action to cause several actions, so one switch activating action 141 on tag 12 can cause a lot of dollbits with crusher tagged 12 to activate but one of them can turn up the lights on tag 13, another one can raise a floor on tag 14 and so on. An action can be delayed by 1 second by making the ceiling over the barrel 35 units higher, since action 141 makes a crusher move at 1 unit per tic and there are 35 tics in a second. So for a 5 second delay make the ceiling height 16 + 5*35 = 191 units, and so on. Hence you could make a mechanism for a switch which turns out the lights in a room and releases monsters with doors opening 5 seconds later, for example. With the limit-removing nature of PrBoom+ you are not even limited to 99 dolls, as I was when I made this map (I was using JDoom, which removes the vanilla platforms limit, allowing lots of lifts to move at the same time)! The map has 48 dolls. The labels 1,2,3 and 4 refer to once-only 'Action Set's that are to be carried out when the boss has been injured for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th time respectively. Back in 2015 I was briefly trying to have the lights flash in the level when the boss died but decided it didn't look very good and abandoned the idea. However, the bits of mechanism for that are still in the map and are redundant --- note the action linedefs are tagged 133 but there are no sectors with that tag. Hence label 4 is completely redundant. ** An important thing to notice is that no harm is done if the Action Sets 1,2 or 3 are 'done' for a second time, because nothing would happen anyway. To start with there are closed doors in the middle of dollbits labelled 2,3,4 so that they are disabled (the barrel explosion will not knock the doll over the action line). Whichever face of the boss is injured first a ROW of dollbits (E,N,W or S) is triggered --- the 'in' tags for each dollbit are the same in the same row, so 801 for E, 802 for N, 803 for W and 804 for S. If Action Set 1 has not yet been done, the COLUMNS corresponding to Action Sets 2,3 and 4 have the dollbits disabled by closed doors that prevent the barrel explosion from pushing the voodoo doll. Hence, whichever face is hit first, Action Set 1 is the only set of actions triggered. Action Set 1 includes a command to open doors tagged 952 which make Action Set 2 possible to use the next time a boss face is hit. Action Set 2 includes a command to open doors tagged 953 to make Action Set 3 possible. Action Set 1 is effectively triggered EVERY TIME the boss is hit, but the second and third times have no effect. Action Set 2 is triggered the 2nd, 3rd and 4th time the boss is hit. Action Set 3 is triggered the 3rd and 4 time and Action Set 4 (if it did anything) would only be triggered the 4th time.

It's been a blast to watch (and play) these levels. PS: a small tip to make viewing stuff out of bounds a bit easier on the eyes, in glboom you can turn on flashing HOM-indicator, which removes the trippy HOM-effects. Of course this is all forgetting about the fact of how long it takes to design these maps, and how big they become. But for us computer freaks it's always fun to think about it. :P

Less than 5 minutes in and I'm quite impressed with all the little details the map designer put into the map for readability. Neat level design syncing what is basically the elevator sectors to a death timer. Haven't watched to the end yet but definitely can imagine it was pulled off with a duplicated player 1 start (voodoo doomguy) surrounded by barrels. All those barrels are a heavily sectored room which has seperate floor tagged with same sector number as the visible elevators. As for how to position all those sectors so that any of them could cause death I can imagine a trail of barrels leading to the main death barrel room looking like something out of DooM 2's Factory level exit room with the Cacodemons but with tons of barrels and tall elevator shafts that smash into a ceiling instead. Tl;dr Love the map! Definitely have ideas on how to duplicate it. Already planning on downloading the map to play it myself. The extra detail of having each of the "timers" be 4 height separated elevators so each one disappears from view as the final elevators is a stroke of genius so during the chaos of battle, one can know which one to prioritize.

So here’s my biggest question: how do the enemies spawn in based on damage to the Icon? My first thought was a linedef similar to Sigil’s eye switches, but that would require the icon to be hit in a specific order, which doesn’t seem to be the case.
@decino5 жыл бұрын
Good question! I hadn't thought about that. Maybe that's what those other voodoo doll rooms are used for, to create some sort of logical sequence that always reveals the Imp -> Pinky -> Caco waves in that order no matter which side of the IoS is damaged first.
@peterhawes96805 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's what the other dolls and barrels are for! I will need to check in DoomBuilder II to decode the mechanism, it's 4 years since I finished the map. It is a difficult map for me to complete playing normally, so it is insanely impressive the way you take on the 100 per cent kills. I forgot about the extra archviles in the level but thought no one would ever try for 100 per cent kills because you can't kill the main hidden archvile anyway. When the IoS gets more damaged more of the monsters spawn at ground level to fight the player, otherwise in the early stages some spawn points are buried in the floor so the player has an easier time of it. When the boss is damaged, some spawning locations pop up to ground level, increasing the threat to the player further. When the archvile arrived but you didn't find it, it was probably buried in the floor.

What are people's thoughts on not being able to free look and aim in og Doom? Playing a lot again recently and watching these videos, it strikes me that it might be quite a fundamental part of what gives Doom it's sense of momentum and focus. When I play Doom 2016, it feels more like a Quake spin-off to me. I can't imagine them restricting freelook in any modern Doom, it probably wouldn't fly with most people now but.. personally I think it's quite a core thing, strangely, never to be revisited probably. That, along with the simpler graphics and sound, which make them so distinct, is something I don't think will ever quite be done again. But yeah, a fixed view really adds something for me, despite it being a limitation.

Interesting Icon of sin variant but it's definitely a map I have to play by myself before I can say I like it. The death timer is innovative and the mechanism behind is brilliant but it turns into a marathon of flipping switches killing monsters and dogging enemy fire. But it's in any case worth to figure it out.😀 At the end I have one question. Has it to be an archvile who telefrag the voodoo doll? Would for example an imp not do the same job?🤔 Thanks in advance for an answer and again a great video decino.👍👊🤘❤
@decino5 жыл бұрын

with the health vial pickup (every time you damage a single IOS) you gain 2 or 1 health point. The rooms with the news markings had the barrels fat enough to damage by 1 or 2 units. It could be a switch off some sort, maybe triggering the megaspheres. So, after the 21 minute mark, we hear the icon of sin's sound and at the same time one barrel exploded from the rooms that we just saw and as we know it before, along with the barrels damage the voodoo pickups a health vial too

One thing that got me wondering... how is it made so the brain bleeds when you shoot it? Then I realised it's Voodoo Dolls again - one of the dolls gets pushed, probably the same one that grabs the health potions, and crosses a linedef to trigger it. I assume that using a Lost Soul (so the kill counter can be at 370) to do the telefragging is too unreliable, or somehow activating a crusher on the Archvile cages when the Icon blows up... come to think of it... too many separate rooms with separate sector tags - a Demon might have been a nice compromise otherwise... fast enough to enter the teleporters but with low enough health to be reliably crushed in time.

Died once at the very end trying to shoot the final rocket into Baphomet's brain, but it was during an unrecorded practice run. Then I hit the record button.

He can and the dead Doomguy will turn into Master Chief and help you kill all the devil spawn. Super epic easter egg.

Mr. decino, may I have you opinion as a programmer: based on what we saw here, can the Doom engine be a self-contained Turing-complete machine?
@decino5 жыл бұрын
Anything that can simulate transistors and logic gates can be, so yes.

Someone should make a map that's 10 icon of sins in a decagon shape and you spawn in the middle. Also they only spawn archviles
@syrianterroristgaming67324 жыл бұрын
Apart from the decagon part, you can do that with the normal Icon Of Sin. Take a look at decino's video on RNG.

If you used god mode, would it stop the timer death? Not that I would, just curious
@decino5 жыл бұрын
Nop. Even God mode cannot save you from getting telefragged.
@mjc09615 жыл бұрын
God mode doesn't save the player from telefrags, so I doubt it.
