A bit of a toss up this. I prefer most songs with the original Gravis version. That said some were better with the patches. Still if you really want good sound for Doom my go to source is a Roland MT 55 as this is pretty much what it was composed on. PS: Yes I know the SC-55 is not perfectly identical to the SCC-1 but it is from the same company and uses the same tone generator and samples.

i might let you know that some sound models etc or sound cards like this one are just a hardware and general midi are software.

the soundfont version of that they replaced that pan flute with wooden block.

It's a wood block in the official GM spec. The Gravis patch file for Doom remaps this.

why not just dump the real awe32's midi patches on this board?

because it doesnt sound like full midi, it sounds like mid synth. full midi uses ring modulation, thats whatthe uart was for, mid uses ring tone. so instead of ringing the sample through for higher output and rate sampling, ring tone sends a block of tone inclination over the sample on top of the sample at play back. the awe32 supports full mid synthesis(thats mid with ring modulation with out uart) its still mid its still sampled, it just ups the quality some. gravis does not support full mid synthesis. its like FM sythesis at sample playback well sy at 22khz and up. awe is the same except its more like FM synthesis and Am Modulation in one with ring.

None of that makes any sense... The AWE and Gravis cards use the same synthesis model: Sample playback. The AWE is more advanced in that it supports effects, multiple layers and a low pass filter but the basic model is the same. Neither chipset supports ring modulation. FM synthesis is a totally different technology that uses algorithms to generate sound. This one can do ring mod but I don't think it is what you think it is. The AWE32 ROM patches wouldn't work on a Gravis because many of them depend on multi-layering or the filter which Gravis can't do. Even if it could the AWE32 ROM sounds are ghastly... -edit- MIDI makes no use of ring modulation. It's just a serial protocol that tells the synth engine what to do. Technically the Gravis and AWE boards do not support MIDI and must use software to emulate the interface. "UART" is just a simplified version of the interface.
