I think we need to take a step back and use Occam's Razor here instead of spinning wild mystery tales. Why attribute the eruption of these (probably connected) volcanoes to magic eggs and a cult of death-worshipping assassins using some magic artefacts to cause a cataclysm when the is a much simpler and more realistic explanation: A tired slave lost control of the cart he was pulling through the mines, and the cargo - half a dozen large barrels of vinegar - rolled downhill where they crashed into the well stocked baking soda depot.

H.P. Lovecraft also wrote a short story about a great civilization that suddenly fell because they pissed off some eldritch being, called "the Doom that Came to Sarnath". Not only it is called "the Doom", people of Sarnath were also originally shepherds, just like Valyrians. Reading Barth's record of Aerea Targaryen in Fire and Blood convinced me that something Lovecraftian was going on with Valyria. So anyways I think it's safe to say something similar happened with Valyria. The Valyrians, consumed by their arrogance and greed, used too much magic and dug too deep in the Fourteen Flames (like the Dwarves of Moria from LOTR). After all the mages controlling Fourteen Flames got killed due to Dragonlords backstabbing each other, they woke up some unspeakable eldritch horror and brought doom upon them.

Also for those wondering, The Targaryens weren't technically the only dragonlords to survive the doom. Aurion was a dragonlord in Qohor who survived the doom, afterwards he raised a Qohorik host of 30 thousand men and declared himself the first Emperor of Valyria, he marched to the capitol but he and his host were never seen or heard from again. There were also several Dragonlords that survived the doom along with their dragons in Lys and Tyrosh, but they and their dragons were quickly killed when people found out about the doom.

The way the Valyrians are written is very interesting and mysterious, a combination of Ancient Rome and Atlantis with some dragons thrown in for good measure. It just goes to show how powerful the Valyrians really were when you consider that the Targaryens; a tiny shard of that ancient and powerful empire; would go on to conquer an entire continent by themselves once the rest had all perished.

Even before seeing this video, I always figured that Valyria was to Westeros was what Rome was to Western Europe. It was the world-spanning empire, that gave way to the dark ages after it fell. And I figured that the Doom was basically a huge volcanic cataclysm, that became mythologized as a magical, supernatural event by descendants of the survivors and their contemporaries.

I prefer to believe a sort of combination-of-the-above theory, where the Doom was caused by the murder of prominent sorcerers who kept the Fourteen Flames "sedated" (for lack of a better word) by the Lannister gold-funded Faceless Men, but that the Faceless Men were themselves the originators of the plot. My thinking is that the Faceless Men are assassins for hire, and by tradition can only take lives when paid to (in gold or otherwise). Meaning that as much as they wanted to destroy Valyria, they couldn't just do it of their own volition. So instead, they spent a century or more hatching a conspiracy in which their agents became the advisers of dragonlords and other nobles, influencing them into waging war on each other and suggesting the Faceless Men as the intermediaries by which the killings could be done. Perhaps one of the less-wealthy dragonlords was persuaded early on to ignore the Lannister Gold prophecy and meet with representatives from Casterly Rock, selling them Brightroar in order to finance his vendettas.

Why would the slaves respect the modus operandi of a not yet founded guild of assassins ? They considered killing another slave mercy, that’s how powerless and desperate they were. Slaves killing 14 or so mages to provoke a cataclysm, in a murder-suicide plan is more plausible than them slowly playing the Game of Thrones like some nobles in court.

There was no "vision" lol....it was more likely something far more mundane, such as they had a falling out with the powers that be and had to flee into exile. Then, after the doom their family lore became "I told you so because I am smarter than you" and negelected to bit about leaving in the dead of night to avoid the soldiers sent to arrest them. Local history has a tendency to twist facts to make the teller appear wiser or stronger than they really were at the time, and since there is no one to say otherwise, it becomes "fact".
