TO BE ABSOLUTELY FAIR, Larry.....wasn't a great dad. His son does have a right to be angry. Not "call the DOD angry", but still. But that's just how families are. There's no instruction manual, no flight plan, it's just you and your loved ones hurting and disappointing each other whether you intend to or not. When you're a kid you see your parents as superheroes, perfect people with all the answers, or in some unfortunate cases monsters that torment you. But the reality is they're just people stumbling through the fog like you are, trying the best they can, being what they are by the choices they make in the moment. You could argue Larry was just trying to protect his family from the government, or maybe it was more about the fear of rejection. Either way, the result was the same.

His wife left him. He was trapped in a room where he would kill anyone with radiation. He then spent several years (and it was years) trapped in the Ant Farm, where he was essentially a test experiment. We literally have no idea how long Larry was trapped, nor how long he stayed in the mansion. The fact is that Paul resented him, because he followed in his footsteps and ended up probably being told how amazing Larry was. To find out his was still alive, and had hidden away, I can understand would've been a blow to him, but then a shadowy government organisation who maintains the normal-ness of everyday life turns up and says "Yeah, he escaped from us, know where he is?" and you hand him over? No way.

I mean, that's not absolutely fair, in that it minimizes the extent of this here betrayal, and the idiocy of Paul's reaction to having his own bullshit go south on him. But, noted. Yeah, Larry was not a great parent. Not the worst one by any means, but not the best. He was closeted and infidelitous (which isn't great), and he didn't reenter his kid's life quite as soon as he could (after the traumatic injury, kidnapping, and decade or so of imprisonment). Then Paul used his attempt to reconnect as an opportunity to rat him out to an organization who wanted to imprison him indefinitely while using him as a lab-rat, if not just kill him. Primarily (it would seem) for the sins of not being dead and having had a wife who grieved for him. So, yeah.

Larry wasn't the best of dads, but nothing and I mean NOTHING in the universe can justify his son's actions. I really hope they tricked him somehow by using his hatred for his dad. It's hard not to blame Paul though. While Larry has tried his hardest to atone for being separated from them, it wasn't until now he met his family in years. That's years of abandonment issues for both sons well into their old age. That hurt doesn't go away overnight. Not only that, but he unloaded a lot of personal baggage on the guy, who on top of an already unstable powder keg has this bombshell dropped on him. I gotta say that Larry is one of my favorite gay characters in all of films. This is the appropriate and more honorable way of admitting he's gay and was humble. Because usually I give thumbs down to kind of shows who get political about it. But I understand why he' still had that shut-in feeling when he had a tough time admitting it to his son because back in the 40's there was hell of a lot of criticism.
@Sh1ftane4 жыл бұрын
@Toastie The 60s was a different time. Widespread racism was still apparent and being homosexual was grounds for a person to be removed from their line of work. Now imagine if Larry, a decorated pilot was to be outed as gay. He would've lost his job and the only line of income for his family. With all of this pressure building up on him with no one to tell all of this to, having Joe by his side was the best thing to ever happen to him. He's not faultless, but given the options society gave him then he had to go with the best outcome.
@johnwotek38164 жыл бұрын
@Toastie Again, it's the 60's. By that time, a man the age of Larry still being single was very rare and pretty much frown uppon and it was even more for divorces... and let's not forget the 60's was when he was an adult. He grew up in the fourties and fifties, at least, which were even worse period to be gay. They showed, in season one, the reaction of his parent when they learned about his homosexual behavior with some of his classmates... the point is, back then, society tended to crush a lot of people like Larry into the mold. Larry made some mistakes, that undeniable... but his character would be very boring without and, even if he was gay, he still loved his wife and kids. Larry's homosexuality (and character's arc) is all about the difficulty of opening up and how social pressure can force you into a path.
