Thank you so much for this video. My girlfriend and I are coming to terms with our phone addiction. There's two distinct versions of this situation for us. She is hooked on mostly positive, funny, short form content. My addiction is on dark, negative, in depth news about the world. I know a lot of empathetic people who fall into the trap of feeling something like, that they must learn about every person out there who's suffering, and suffer alongside with them until there is no more suffering in the world. A mental trap that says, I cannot allow myself to be happy, while there is so much injustice and so many others are suffering. It's a trap that has kept me down for many years, but that I am grateful to be moving away from.

Oh, there are some of those billionaire losers out there who suck the life out of seekers for money and fame, who really pays in the end, seeker looking for truth or the one selling spirituality? Just before he died, Timothy Leary predicted that the internet would become the “next” addiction. Quite remarkable as it was in its infancy at that time, I think. For years I observed others and wondered at their obsession with their phones. It then happened to me, during the pandemic. I now find myself struggling with an actual addiction. Feeling that sense of emptiness and self loathing, guilt and shame for a behavior I seem to have no control over. I thought this presentation was quite timely as I was in the middle of mindless scrolling when it popped up.

Its a medium that can have some benefit just as reading does. Documentaries for example can be beneficial in showing different aspects and lenses people have in life. Its all about being responsible in what you consume and allow yourself to experience. While meditation is important if there wasn't education in some form then I don't think youd truly be able to benefit all sentient beings that effectively. Its always good to build up a foundation before expanding or even going beyond it. Even in the Tibetan tradition education is seen as important and to be honest some religious traditions and beliefs such as limiting yourself from certain modern amenities like electricity for example has no purpose. Technology is something that must be understood and utilized to progress humanity and fundamentally transform lives. If it is ignored by those with good outlooks and intent it will inevitably lead to a dystopia being created. They key is simply being wise with ones own decisions.

You know you've hit that rock bottom when you think your only way out is through enlightenment 🔥 Although, it is funny how we only seem to care about spiritual freedom when things become unbearable. Is it a common thing? When things are moderately okay you don't even think about it, you just live. I know it's all silly because deep inside I know I'm probably not ready. Although, I do believe I've healed quite a bit. Now accepting and wanting love and intimacy after years of being terrified of it. From years of believing I was unlovable to finally opening up and being authentic, even when it's cringe or weird. Mundane things can change us more than anything. For me, poetry became a spiritual experience. It's like I had so many blocks and barriers inside of my mind it took me ages to undo them. And now I look at my writing, compulsive, chaotic, raw, messy, just like the things that live inside that fevered mind of mine. But amongst that brain-vomit there are little gems of truth popping up here and there. All good poetry asks a question without providing an answer. I wish to one day grow past the words.

my enlightened friend, i became enlightened through the people i’ve discovered through “social media.”; what is life if not a social game where we share physical and metaphysical media? So you can find gnosis through social media is probably what i should say… but nirvana itself comes from putting the knowledge you gain into the life you live; it comes from living in the INDIVIDUAL truth instead of the COLLECTIVE lie/LIFE we all live, it is miserable living with lies which is why all inevitably want to leave the cycle… personally i love it; been here a little tooooo long though.

I've always been interested in the deep thinking aspect of the universe of mind since a young age and taught some of my friends how to 'find wisdom instead of smarts' which seems to be the way nowadays. chanting on beads helps with this in a mechanical manner, as the scrolling is taking advantage of motion that we don't have to work hard for, we just move our fingers while the electricity works, so developing strong chanting with bead movement helps us form that pleasure-work connection with our own voice/names/mantras (not in an egoic way, but like, so sound isnt dukkha to us when we hear it repeated, but it actually becomes more nourishing)

The instant gratification, the quickly fading rush of pleasure "doomscrolling" gives is horrible for so many mental abilities like the attention span and I feel like it hinders one's ability to achieve Enlightment like no other. It may be compared to very addictive drugs really, most other activities, other dalliances, they would at least require some sort of mental or physical activity, some struggle to achieve pleasure which might not be directly fruitful but would at least help us still stay principled somewhat, unlike the "doomscrolling" that gives you very short lasting pleasure with the flick of a finger and makes one numb and unable to step out of the comfort zone.

When you said theres next to no one who is able to give you meaningful tools to make meaningful spiritual progress, I think one of those people who are able to do this is Sadhguru I came across his videos on youtube and i had no idea about any spiritual stuff or any meditation or yoga, which i think helped me a lot because i didnt assign any meaning to these words, all i thought about these subjects before I heard of sadhguru was, Why do all these buddha monks sit all day, i dont get it, balance seems key to anything I learned a mediation and kryia yoga from sadhguru, with not much expectation of spiritual growth, i just wanted to be happy, i was at the lowest point in terms of overall health And i heard about the term enlightment and it became a goal i set, because it seemed thats what everyone wanted and was the point of meditating Now I've realized enlightment isnt somethjng you acheive or obtain or learn to do, just as meditation isnt something you do. But these words as many other words, especially in america have lost a impactful meaning and people now use the word yoga, mediation like they know what they are, when it seems like to me most people in america think mediation means to de stress or relax or become peaceful or its something you do when you are feeling bad to feel good I believe that Sadhguru gave me the tools to make meaningful growth on my spiritual path, and my goal of enlightment got dropped along other things since i started to do the practices he offers I dont know many things, but one thing ive learned is, it doesn't matter what you are doing, it matters how you do it

I might make a video on Sadhguru some time. This type of guru is very common in India/ Nepal, in fact there are many of them but certain ones, like Sadhguru and Osho, recognised the potential market in the West and so we know more about them and next to nothing about the others 🙏🙏🙏

Pranam guruji, Had a question. How do you observe your own phone usage habits and social media usage? Struggling to reduce phone usage and wondering how you do it despite having a popular channel. Thank you🙏
@ultimatemeaningАй бұрын
Hi friend, and thank you for the excellent question. Whereas there are various apps to regulate you screen time, my feeling is the best thing to do is transfer your screen time to more virtuous or positive activities. Of course if you are a Buddhist, etc., then this could mean spending more time meditating and studying, but even for non spiritual people, it is possible to use some of that time to exercise or volunteer in the community. The root of it all is mindfulness, and we tend to become habituated to negative activities, and then without even being aware of it get sucked down the rabbit hole. Something I found personally quite helpful is to give more of my time to others. And not necessarily in a significant way. Just when you meet people in the shops or on the street then being there for others, and listening to their needs, will make life more meaningful and less self absorbed. And this is the direction our society is headed in, with everyone glued to their device and ignoring the world around them. If we can turn out attention towarsd the needs of other, we will ourselves find more peace and healing, and at the same time make the world a better place. Hope this helps ♥♥♥

Technically speaking 'Realization' can happen even when scrolling thru dumb shit on your phone tho🤷🏼♂️ I have noticed merit in actually letting these conditioned 'bad' behaviors be exactly as they are, not trying to change them! If we only keeeeep changing our 'bad'/'unspiritual' patterns we might be doing so until we've finally eliminated eeevery single bit of 'ego'...! There's no need for that! Yes you'll be a jivanmukta instantly when you finally Realize, skipping the jnani phase cuz 'all' general karma is eleminated, but it will take much longer! Don't take a detour!🙏🏼🙏🏼

@@ultimatemeaning aaah like that. Well Buddha for sure wasn't scrolling! 😜🤣 But imo it doesn't matter when it happens. It can happen randomly when you are (/have made yourself) ripe for it to happen! So no 'example' should be needed whatsoever. All thats needed is to do the core practices of letting go etc. Scrolling is just an automatic habit, it's not necessarily in the way of Liberation! What's more in the way, imo, is trying to change your automatic habits because you believe it will help you Liberate; that's Second Dart TYPE of behavior / done out of ignorance. Yes when the behavior is finally out of the way by working on it, unconditioned again, it helps for sure because now 'the mirror is more polished which allows that one reflection to be seen more easily' (the polishing of the mirror analogy). But until that time, trying to change the automatic behavior is often actually in the way because it is done out of ignorance. In the end I came to fall back to lots of old patterns that I once really disliked....; lots of gaming, scrolling, eating carbs, lazy, not being productive at aaaall... It's hella 'unspiritual'!😂 But it's pretty clear to me that that was necessary or rather INEVITABLE to 'fall back to again' by letting go etc.🤷🏼♂️ Just let go let go let go let go let go let go, to remove the fears / ignorance-based behaviors, etc! We may really not like the 'me' that's underneath.... But the end justifies the means on this Path, and the 'end result' is worth it🤷🏼♂️😄 So to come back to your question/thing; its not about examples of people who awoke by scrolling, its about examples of people who awoke by doing the core practices! No matter whether theyre scrolling or not; irrelevant. (My Buddhist terminology isnt optimal, I hope it's clear what I mean)

@@ultimatemeaning the obstacle is pain or anger, the way, being forgiveness or forebearance. Weights for lifting, as in exercise, are the obstacle, the way is discipline and willpower, that which is attained through commitment and dedication, thus ultimately perseverance is had. Are you an absolutist? In that, you believe you know Truth in its totality. I myself only ever recognized truth as being a direction towards which we grow in. To say otherwise is pretentious and causes conflict with others. I am now obliged to ask: so, what is the Truth? Is Truth that which prevents you from studying Plato or Platonics in general? The truth that keeps you in bondage to Tibetan Buddhism? Is it the truth that prevents you from building bridges and roads for the people? Or is it the one that impeded you from becoming a doctor so mending broken bones? Is it the Truth that made you selfish so only saving yourself all the while you neglected the world and turned your back on her?

I get your point, so don't think I disagree. However, I've watched videos such as from OSHO that have taken me to higher levels of being. He's been gone for 35 years, and I still benefit from his wisdom. You must choose but choose wisely what you watch on the internet.

@ultimatemeaning is this video about OSHO, or is he speaking? I had a peak experience many years ago like Eckhart Tolle. I found it very difficult to function in everyday life so I kind of forced myself to come back to regular whatever unconscious LOL but OSHO showed me how to be awake and still function by being the observer, watching, like a mirror without judgment. Like you said, there are many levels. It's a journey 🙃

Aren’t we all just a being searching for happiness and relief of suffering? But what would losing that make us then? Not against it just wondering if this is just our very being, and thence why would we not just indulge in what we are?

Thank you, Lama la. I had no idea what doomscrolling was. I had to look it up. It seems to me there are loads of things to be addicted to in a culture that promotes comfort and self-indulgence over anything else. Another helpful tool, for me, is to sit with discomfort/boredom/etc in small doses at first without self soothing with the addictive substance/phone/food/etc. Being ok to experience discomfort and see it as an ally can be helpful. I say to myself, "Bring on the suffering. It's inevitable. Learn to deal with now it rather than avoid it. I accept how I feel in this moment, and I know this feeling is fleeting." I am learning that the universe doesn't need to constantly entertain me for me to be content. One step at a time, as they say! ❤

Yes, I’ve noticed the more random scrolling of the internet became a daily habit, the poorer my single-pointed attention. Meditative equipoise went down the gurgler 👎 Scrolling through social media is training the mind in exactly the OPPOSITE way from what I need. More scrolling= more fragmented thoughts… the monkey mind is empowered to run randomly in any direction, pulling the emotions around with it! Blurghhhh. Good job I just got my home internet cut off. I’m in the midst of breaking the habit. Still have mobile data though… 😉

I don't want instant gratification, I just want a moment of calm that I can build into something bigger. That's what I keep looking for, because the moment I stop looking I go crazy and hurt myself. I'd like to take a spiritual path, an nice, slow, long one that lasts my entire life. But the stakes of stopping my momentum and trying to for example meditate for me aren't that I feel uncomfortable, it's that I tear myself apart with my fingernails. I think maybe I need serious psychiatric help before embarking on a long spiritual path but I've been hurt so, so badly by western psychiatrists and the way they approach the mind. I'm too scared to seek help. Sorry, I know this video wasn't a personal attack, I just... Wanted to say something. Maybe I just like the sound of my own keyboard too much.

We are all on this roller coaster ride called Samsara, but to a greater or lesser degree. Part of the reason why so many people in the West are suffering from ADHD and other similar conditions is because we have become habituated to continual sensory stimulation. This is addictive and as with many addictions we convince ourselves that we need them to remain sane or happy when in fact the addiction is what is causing us to suffer. e.g. You often smokers say "I need a cigarette to calm down" when in fact it is withdrawal from the nicotine that is making them anxious. But I get it it is difficult to go cold turkey. The solution is to first recognise there is an issue and then to decide to overcome that. Once you have made this decision then you need to think about your path to recovery seriously and be careful. One thing for sure is that there is always hope and that peace and tranquility can be achieved, its only a matter of finding a suitable path to well being. I will be making some guided meditations in the hope that they may be of some benefit for people like you and others who are finding it difficult enter the path of healing. ♥🧡🧡
@discordlexia2429Ай бұрын
@@ultimatemeaning Thank you for your kind words! I'm trying something small, just going for a walk once a day between 10 minutes to an hour. I agree, addictions are formed as a cope. For me, I used video games, books, and TV as a way to dissociate and escape an abusive childhood. Unfortunately, there's little to tie me to real life - partially because society these days is so bureaucratic and inhuman, and partially because people these days are kinda mean. We're all struggling with a collapsing society in different ways so it's not really their fault. Hopefully your guided meditations help me and other struggling people. You're a cool guy. Thank you :)

I'll attempt to tickle your funny bone with this: if you're seeking happiness, simply choose to be happy. And if you're aiming for enlightenment, try holding your breath until you pass out - that's when someone will awaken you. But, please, heed this warning: don't try this at home.
@ultimatemeaningАй бұрын
I get the feeling that you don't understand what is mean by happiness and enlightenment in the context of the spiritual path. In that context all beings choose happiness but mix up the causes of happiness and the cause of suffering and then apply themselves to the causes of suffering thinking these will bring happiness. Also enlightenment isn't about becoming unconscious, that is what is called a "nihilistic" position. And sorry if I missed the joke ♥
