Doomsday Clock moves to 90 seconds to midnight as nuclear threat rises

A panel of international scientists has warned that humanity's continued existence is more threatened than ever before.

The Doomsday Clock has been set to 90 seconds to midnight, the closest it has been since it was established in 1974. The clock illustrates global existential threats at the dawn of the nuclear weapons age. The panel explained the risk was greater largely as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. University professor Steve Fetter said: 'Putin has repeatedly raised the spectre of nuclear use.'

When the clock first moved to 100 seconds to midnight in 2019 it was already the closest to midnight it had ever been before. It marked the first time the clock had been set in seconds. If they had continued in minutes they would now have to say we are at 1 minute to midnight. By breaking it into smaller increments it means less. When we get to 1 second to midnight is it going to be 90000 milliseconds to midnight?

Yes. In the time on the clock is adjusted up and down depending on the outlook of the time. For example, in 1984 the clock was set at 3 minutes to midnight. By 1991, it was adjusted several times and it was at 17 minutes to midnight.
