doorcounty.net - A short historical feature about landscape architect Jens Jensen and the history of The Clearing Folk School in Ellison Bay, Wisconsin. Features commentary by famed Door County writer Norbert Blei in one of the last interviews before his death at age 78 on April 23, 2013.
In the course of his long career in Chicago, Jensen worked with many well-known architects, including Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, George Maher and Albert Kahn. He was responsible for a number of Chicago's most well-known public parks, including Portage, Humboldt and Columbus Parks, and his reach extended throughout Cook County and to the Indiana Dunes.
In 1935, the successful landscape architect moved from Highland Park, Illinois to Ellison Bay in Door County, where he established The Clearing Folk School, which he called a "school of the soil" to train future landscape architects. The Clearing preserved open space and created an education center in the 'folk school tradition.'
Jensen died at his home, "The Clearing," on October 1, 1951, at the age of 91.
