Thanks. Very inspiring to just listen to Steve. Graham Coxon's music video "Falling" has a lot of heart and realism. I guess that's what the AMIRA does. It gets on the ground and gives you something cinematic. Characters and stories float before your eyes.

I actually don’t understand the advantage of shooting with an expensive production camera like this, over a cheaper DSLR. The main advantages he lists, are that the stuff in the menu is easy to find. The only other advantage mentioned, was the skin tones. Curious as to why top DPs and big productions rely on these cameras and why their cost is so high.

There are many factors that go into such decision. In my opinion, productions that use expensive cine cameras have much bigger things to worry about than the camera budget. It is not uncommon for a camera rental package, and total camera dept. cost to represent less than 5% of the overall budget. At that level, producers must ensure they are working with the very top level equipment since they are burning tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars/pounds per minute of filming. Every piece of equipment can fail at any time, but the likelihood of an ARRI camera (when properly maintained by an owner op or rental house) is much less, compared to a DSLR or smaller piece of equipment that was never designed to be used at 110% of its abilities in every single possible weather condition, all the time. Plus, with a DSLR or equivalent, there 's plenty of issues with the lack of TC sync, proper SDI outputs for video village, and just overall ergonomics. Sometimes a bigger, heavier camera is exactly what is needed. I have asked myself the same question as you, but when it comes to big budgets and top level productions, going with ARRI or other top level brand is mandatory. There is a reason whey ARRI cameras are built like tanks - it's kind of like a purpose built race car - they are designed to be driven 100% of the time at maximum speed and capacity. Build quality, engineering and the quality of the images coming out of the camera can contribute to a premium price tag. Not to mention that ARRI have been around for 100 years so, their brand name carries a lot of prestige too. To a lot of people on that level, this matters too.

Yes, ARRI is a simple, easy to use, prosumer camera. Its only drawback is the small 3.2k sensor.

It's hard to tell the difference between 3.2K and true 4K, even on a 4K monitor. Plus it doesn't crop the sensor (that much) compared to Red when shooting in 2K or HD mode.

The sensor is not small at all, actually.

..smaller cameras, but personaly I found by the time you built them up, to become production usable, they become ergonomicaly tricky :DDDD This sentence redefine dslr industry; Its like my newest rig I love so much [1DC + Tilta6x6matteBox + 17-120Cine + TascamDr-701D] how can you posibly use that setup for vlogs for instance.. But Well pointed Steve, well pointed
