For those without sword knowledge: T-10 steel is type of spring steel similar to 1095, it's good for taking a deeper edge (id est making it sharper), but sharp swords lose edge retention more quickly in a combat scenario and thus it'd be ineffective more quickly than a sword that is merely sharp enough. Typically the 'best' steel for a sword is 1060 spring steel giving a good balance of flexibility, hardness, and edge retention. Other popular steels include 1045 steel which is your baseline 'budget' sword that is still moderately effective and your 1095 or T-10 steel as mentioned which is a harder more unwieldy steel. The first sword was actually a respectable sword at least in terms of materials 24:50 Real swords are about 2.5lbs - 3.5lbs they're hardly heavy even a 2 handed war sword was usually under 5lbs. (about 4.5lb for the upper limit of war swords.) Hangers and cosplay swords tend to weigh more because they're built for blade profile not combat.
@TwiggyHetfield272 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this. My brother brought home a 3 piece set (Katana, Wakazashi, & Tanto) a few years ago. When I tried to lift the katana I found it very heavy. Mind you I'm also 5'3" 103lbs, but I thought it would've been lighter. I do know that most, if not all, katanas aren't "real" katanas outside Japan. But I didn't know they made certain swords heavier for blade profit. Good to know.
@dwlr0072 жыл бұрын
@@TwiggyHetfield27 Yeah if it's intended to be a hanger then they tend to be ill-suited to swing around and attempting to swing them around can cause serious injury if they're too heavy. Hangers also typically are made from different metals meant to resist tarnishing rather than being good for combat. When I say 'good' steel for combat you want it to be flexible, the old proverb about the tree that bend is one that doesn't break applies to swords as well, but spring steel tends to be more expensive and harder to work with for ornate designs. Most katana sets are designed to be hangers even those typical bought in Japan are meant to be hangers. Typically a Japanese family would have a heirloom katana that would hang mounted in their house if they were a family of high enough stature, these swords weren't actually intended to be used either even in the medieval era. I'm going to be a little nerdy here, so upto you if you want to read ahead, but I also included your 'ideal' sword lengths that you'd typically carry on a daily basis for both Japanese and Western style swords at the bottom if that interests you at all. For katanas specifically, katanas is simply 'sword' in Japan whilst they typically refer a high(er) quality tachi or uchigatana there isn't a lot of standardization on what would be called a 'katana' especially when single edged swords from around the world would technically be referred to as a katana. Unpopularly for those who enjoy Japanese culture the Katana tends to have issues compared to western weapons. A katana can pretty much only be a cutting implement, they're ill suited against armor and they also tend to be shorter than the equivalent western sword. In terms of cutting edge a European style sword can have an edge that is sharper than a katana should you place an emphasis on cutting capacity, but the flexibility of the European style design allows you to sacrifice in one area to emphasis others allowing you to have a sword that might have better thrusting abilities for instance or have dual edges (which allows different set of strikes using a reverse swing) The major benefit of a katana is that for a beginner the katana naturally wants to align it's edge, meaning that you can be less skilled and still hit that sweet spot for the edge to cut which makes them popular amongst youtubers and other amateurs it also unfortunately leads to a lot of misinformation as somebody trying to do a cutting test tend to be naturally more successful with a katana leading people to believe they are 'better' swords when it's typically the opposite. Historically Japanese steel was also of a lower quality so they did a folded steel technique which allowed lower quality steel to behave like that of a higher quality which is why a good sword maker in Japan tended to receive more renown than sword makers in the West since it was much more of an art to get the most out of the lesser material. With your listed height and weight in terms of Japanese swords you'd be looking at a roughly 27 inch sword that weighs roughly 1.7lbs as your 'ideal' sword. Keep in mind this is based on a sword you would have been wearing around as general purpose not what you'd want to be taking to war. What western culture typically calls a katana wasn't really used in as a war sword even in Japan (They had much longer swords and pole weapons like the West, they stereotypical katana was more for honorable duels amongst Samurai.) The sword you'd be using would be called a Shaku, it's a type of Japanese short sword. If you were to order a Western style sword your equivalent 'ideal' sword would be 28.5 inches and approximately 2lbs again this would be your arming sword that you'd just walk around with on a daily basis. And just for a bonus tidbit, your height and weight are on the low end for a soldier of the time period so if you were to go to war, you'd likely be given a 2 handed war sword. Polearm such as pole axes and warhammers were generally reserved for larger individuals whereas those of shorter and lighter stature might find them unwieldy. A war sword adds length but allows for the 2 handed grip. Obviously since it's a 2 handed weapon you'd not be able to carry a shield, but swords tend to have a higher defensive capability by themselves than other weapons even if they come with certain drawbacks such as being relatively ineffective against full armor.
@kevinmorrice2 жыл бұрын
As my metalwork teacher said "Even a spoon can cut if sharpened" that's why I never trust a sword demo being genuine
@dwlr0072 жыл бұрын
@@kevinmorrice Eh you can generally tell by the setup and the experience of the wielder if the demonstration is 'genuine' or not. If you're trying to cut through chainmail and putting it against a tree then yeah you can tell they don't know what they're doing, but if they set it up against a skin analog that gives a bit when hit you have a chance for it being genuine. As for the spoon analogy, kitchenware tends to be much sharper than than swords. You can typically hold the blade of a sword and not cut yourself (depending on the type of sword and it's intended use) since you get more leverage with a sword having it somewhat sharp still lets you cut on a strike. The swords in this demo were pretty obviously dull and their setup was flawed, but they also didn't claim it as a demonstration either so it was just entertainment, so it was fine.

i got rekt nostalgia from this. i love you guys, and all your content across the channels (discontinued ones included) so much and have been here since team edge was a channel shot in matts garage and back yard! it really feels like you guys have grown up alongside us, and its comforting. even if your content is catered towards being family friendly, you guys have really gotten confident with it and i love it!! you got jokes for the kids, the teens and the adults in the family, and i think this is helped by the fact that you guys are very open and close with your audience. unlike most content companies, you guys actually take the time and effort to personally connect with the audience, and constantly requesting for our feedback on the content so you guys can work to both make content WE like, as well as content you guys like to make. You guys take the risks most other companies won't, and I honestly believe Hi5 to be one of the best companies out there, as you guys really aspire to make EVERYONE happy in the experience, both your audience and your employees.
