Tanner: What if the sun's only half a parsec away? Matt: Is that a Star Wars unit of measurement or is that a real thing? A parsec is a real unit of measurement for larger distances. BUT I can honestly say after a couple astronomy classes in college we NEVER used it. EVER. We used astronomical units & lightyears, that was it. Someone had asked our professor if a parsec was a real unit of measurement for space distances. He said yes, but we'd never use it unless we actively pursued astronomy as a career. Also, to answer Tanner's question. The sun is not half a parsec away lol. The earth to the sun is 1 au. 1 parsec is about 206,000 au.

While it's not a perfect parallel, it reminds me of Rankine, a unit of temperature made as an alternative to Kelvin using Fahrenheit as it's base. It exists, but nobody uses it unless expressly told to provide it, and even then it's usually provided with Kelvin anyway.

Clicking on a far off star or nebula they give you the astronomical units or light-years. No where on that program is parsecs (at least none that I've found)

@@TwiggyHetfield27 Best guess, someone comes up with something they believe is better than what is currently used, as with Rankine, I assume someone who grew up only knowing Fahrenheit gets into science, hates that they have to now use Celsius and Kelvin which is based on it, and instead tries to get a Fahrenheit based system used instead, it gains some traction but not enough to really take off. In the case of the Parsec vs Astronomical Unit, the Parsec is quite a bit older and has since become obsolete due to AU and Light-year being more stable and easily defined units of distance. A Parsec is derived from the parallax of the night sky at different points of time and trigonometry. It's pretty messy and could give different results depending on who and when they calculated it. It's since been standardised, but it's fallen out of use due to the other options being more stable/accurate for longer.

Hands Down, Dope or Nope is one of the best channels I could've ever subscribed to. Even though it's been years since I subscribed to your channel, you guys never fail to deliver wholesome content that literally makes me ugly laugh. Your current team "Tanner, Woods, And Mathias." is in my opinion one of the strongest teams around. You guys' Balance each other out very well, and truly react to each product organically, and without any scripted jokes.
