I keep seeing so many misconceptions about Doppio's past so I'll just post this to clear it up for those that don't understand. Doppio never turned evil. It's his other half that's evil. Doppio was born with two souls, resulting in two different personalities that share a single body (but alters when shifting between the two). Plenty of fans often mistake him for having DID, Multiple Personality Disorder, Schizophrenia, or some array of mental disorders, but that is not the case. He is, in fact, two people in one and Doppio isn't truly in control, despite being the base personality as indicated. His other half is considered to be the Devil, hence both their names (Doppio meaning Double, Diavolo meaning Devil) but we never get a clear answer because he is supposed to be a mystery (just like his birth, conception, etc.). The eyes (and occasionally freckles) are a major indication as to who is in control when in Doppio's body (such as his eyes changing when fighting Risotto and when his eyes shift colours at birth). This is why we don't see Doppio's eyes in the past, because it's suppose to make you understand that there is more going on than you'd realize. When he fully shifts, his appearance and personality changes drastically (with a different body type, height, pupils, lack of freckles, tattoos, etc.) You're only seeing inklings of Diavolo bleed through him. Diavolo is the one who had his mother kept under the floor. Diavolo is the one who killed his stepfather. Diavolo is the one who lit the fire. Diavolo is the one who does most of the damage of the two. He may have done this in Doppio's body or he could have shifted into his own body, we aren't told. But it does need to be clear, none of this is Doppio's doing, it's his second personality that started this all. Doppio is pretty much innocent of his other half's crimes. I hope that clears things up for you guys.

But I still prefer this version I said. Boss often says that he want to surpass his past, I guess it's because he overpass the original but still due to the origin's will he have to live this way. He seems like a person who has no knowledge about normal life. This is strange because he used to be someone who can walk around and date girls. The reason it reminds me about Doctor.Jekyle is that Jeckle let the monster do the work because he want to do things but can't. He afraid about it but then he can't bear the weakness he had and drank the medicine again. Later he was revealed by his friend (One of the point I find similar) , he turned into the monster with out any medicine. Jekyle kinda became the protection of Hyde. And Hyde is the drugs of Jekyle. He highs giving body control to "Hyde" and "Hyde" would make his thoughts come true. No wonder Diavolo is selling drugs to people. Diavolo, the devil itself is born with the poor man and is the poison hidden in his personality.

Either way, his mother's discovery is heavily implied to have caused him to become completely consumed by his paranoia. It's also somewhat implied that Doppio is actually his base personality, and the "boss" persona was a secondary personality he was born with to protect his identity, meaning this was the moment his "boss" personality became the dominant one.

For those curious about the specifics of Diavolo/Doppio, the anime adds some stuff in this flashback. In the manga, Diavolo never has any lines in the flashback, although the narration box does say that he was a cowardly boy (which would match with him being Doppio). Donatella (Trish's mom) doesn't have any lines either. The woman underneath the floor was specifically said to be Diavolo's mother. It doesn't show Diavolo about to kill his adopted father either, it just cuts to the fire after the priest finds the body. So all of this would lead us to believe that he was just Doppio most of the time as he is now, but the final narration line of the flashback says that the boy's name was Diavolo. This confuses some things because Diavolo must have been cowardly like Doppio is. And they couldn't really have been two personalities at once because the main personality was supposed to be Diavolo since that was what he was known as in the village. And Doppio doesn't know about the double personalities. So I guess Diavolo stopped being a coward when he got King Crimson and Doppio just developed after the fire happened.

Sorry, but you're plain work here. Even Polnareff, later in this part, referenced the Boss to be like Billy Milligan, a person who was known for having multiple split personalities. Point is, Doppio/Boss is a person with DID. However, in the manga, it's safe to assume that it was all caused by the trauma of his mum, but in the anime, it defends your point since DID cannot be gained genetically, even if you were to use the father or maybe the mum as a placeholder for the chemical disposition of the brain.

I didn't think much of this backstory at first but one cold night it just hit me. So many things unexplained. Doppio growing up to be this sweet young man and then the sudden discovery of his still living mother beneath the floorboards. How was she still alive? Why did he do that to her? Why didn't he just kill her? And instead of an answer to any of the questions, we get only the aftermath of Doppio's dark side being revealed. A village burning to the ground, and no answers for the audience. That's what got to me - the inexplicable nature of everything surrounding Diavolo. Shit freaks me tf out every time I re-watch it and I consider myself desensitized to all horror movies

it's in the anime. doppio is born with a hidden personality. when his real identity is at risk of reveal. diavolo comes out and murders. sometime diavolo takes control. and makes the "decisions like at the coffy scene. that's diavolo no freckles." doppio just uses the body and lives obeying the boss sometimes. it's hard to say who fucked trishs mother. but she fell in love with doppio.
