When I got to the end of the level, I was so angry at the commander. Assuming I wouldn't be able to, I ran at him and swung my shovel to pretend to hit him. I expected to just swipe the air. I was completely shocked when the shovel actually connected. The level had successfully guided me into mutiny without giving me any goals. I will never forget this game.

General Robert Nivelle claimed that the offensive would accomplish in 48 hours and 10,000 casualties, but in reality, 187,000 casualties for French, 160,000 casualties for British, and 160,000 casualties for German. Moreover, Nivelle Offensive spent 24 days. Why did french soldiers mutiny ? Because their living conditions were "EXTREMELY BAD" and they suffered from the Battle of Verdun (that spent 10 months) and the Battle of Somme. Nivelle Offensive triggered french soldiers. However, when the mutiny had been suppressed, general Philippe Pétain (Lion of Verdun) promised the soldiers for improved their living conditions. French Government rehabilitated the mutineers in 1994. 77 years after the mutiny.

He also promised that he'd stopped the offensive if things got too hairy or it failed to achieve it's goals after the first two days. To add insult to injury pretty much every other general, the minister of war and the whole French government were skeptical of the offensive as it was slapped together without and care for the details. Nivelle should've counted his lucky stars the soldiers were still willing to man the trenches and defend their country, in my opinion they should've demanded Nivelle be either court martialed or be stripped of rank.

I kind of knew where this was going at the start, but then it just didn’t stop. The slaughter kept going, and going, and *going* with no sign of slowing down. Every step of the way, there was the officer in the rear. By the time we reached the end, it became incredibly obvious what needed to be done to save ourselves from joining the mountains of corpses surrounding us. At that point, when the officer fired on our own terrified men to keep them moving into death, it became clear who the enemy truly was.

The worst part is that this is what gave the French officers a bad reputation, while at the beginning of the game we see an officer charging with his revolver and his sword at the head of the platoon, which happened frequently at the beginning of the war, then these officers died.... I think what really makes this level so impactful is that your character has to use piles of bodies for cover, and then by the end the floor is a literal carpet of even more corpses. I love how during the parts where your fighting the Baron, it feels better. Sure it's still war, but the game uses a brighter color palette, and horrible disaster hasn't struck for the main 4 quite yet. You don't even think how people are still dying, just that you and Freddie are kicking ass. But once the Baron is beaten, it gets more horrific and depraved in the last chapter. Without even telling you, the game shows, primarily most in this level, that the war can't possibly be beaten by beating up some random villain. War is the villain. Fucking amazing storytelling.

I want to thank the creators of this game and Battlefield 1: both devs made those games so realistic, and it showed us just a tiny spec of the horrific nature of the "Great" War. They gave us a form of entertainment, as we tackled the challenges in Valiant Hearts and fought massive operations in BF1, but in the end, the war is just bloody gruesome and pointless to the extent that they shouldn't have been such a sick war. I truly believe in order to achieve peace, we must accept the brutality of the past and make amends to ensure the past doesn't repeat itself
