Cooper Flagg has been labeled the next great NBA superstar by a plethora of media outlets from ESPN, SLAM Magazine and even the NBA itself. Flagg’s hype has exceeded what Zion Williamson received in high school and he is following Zion’s steps by being the next Duke Blue Devil that’s projected to be the #1 pick in 2025 NBA Draft.
Like every high school basketball player, Flagg’s game has a myriad of flaws. Given the fact that he plays with his twin brother, Ace, on every team, has been coached by his Mom (she was an elite player herself) and only played Nike EYBL 16U, Flagg has had the chance to hide his deficiencies. Flagg’s prep evaluation hasn’t been viewed under the same lens as other elite prospects like AJ Dybantsa and Cameron Boozer.
In this video, I break down Flagg’s offensive and defensive tendencies, how I would scout him as an opposing coach and how I can force him into the mistakes. If Cooper Flagg doesn’t correct these habits by the time he gets drafted, his NBA career could mimic 2013 #1 Overall Pick Anthony Bennett.
Do you think Cooper Flagg is overrated?
Who does his game remind you of?

I want to know.

I agree totally with you. I think the kid is very good but has weaknesses that have to be improved to be very good at next level. However I would say I see this in most top prospects now. It’s become a game of natural advantages and flashy dunks and great outside shooting. But the overall fundamentals are weak. Boxing out. Defending off the ball. After using a pick missing the picker rolling to basket. In many cases terrible fundamentals from players considered really good. This is why despite great natural talent the rest of the world is getting hard to beat in international play. The old nyc catholic hs fundamentals are not taught or drilled enough. These fundamentals used to be mastered and allowed players to pull even or surpass more athletic players. So today they shoot better then ever and are bigger and more athletic but have poor overall fundamentals.

Then he's got years of improving within the pro game. Do you honestly think 16 year old Kobe, or Shaq, or LeBron or Michael were as good as they were became by their peak years? Flagg is right when he said you can’t take him out of his game based on your scouting/coaching. He doesn’t just have one thing he’s good at. His defense is arguably his best attribute. He can shoot, rebound, elite blocking, defend, has handles, makes great passes. You can cherry pick anyone’s missed shot and say ah yes your foot was too crooked, or your knees were bent 5° too much… please. No one can stop him in highschool right now. No need to compare him NBA because he still has to finish highschool and college. And his mom is actually a really good coach who played D1 with plenty of awards. I could also make a how to stop Lebron tape based on his 50% misses. Kid is 6'8 at 16 years old. He's going to be playing (bare minimum) PF at the next level. Way, way, way too much criticism that he doesn't dribble like a point guard and doesn't drive like Ja Morant. Kid isn't going to handle the ball even 1/2 that much at the pro level. Kid is double/triple teamed every play. He's not going to be handling the ball every play down the floor at college, more or less the pros. It works because of all the plays you aren't showing.
@ongodddd

Yeah but i think youre kind of missing the point of the video. Having the ball is how cooper plays the game, he is pretty high usage. Its okay that he doesnt dribble like a pg or drive like ja morant at this level, but the guy is just pointing out that his game as it is right now will be a little harder to translate to the NBA unless he fixes some of these ball handling and decision making mistakes. The talent is there 1000% but at that next level obviously everyone is as talented as you. It comes down to specific details at that next level that this dude is pointing out. The criticism is based on NBA level. Hes been alive for like 16 years lol these are warranted mistakes anyways. By the time he gets to the league he will have hopefully vastly improved as many players that come around like him tend to do. I think he will be fine but this is about criticism and getting better for the best league in the world.

Most players even at the professional levels don't know how to play without the ball. That's the main difference between old players back in the day in young players. But this generation is way more skilled. Cooper will do well because there are still flaws even with today's NBA players. Once he has the strength he needs, I'm sure he's rated number one for a reason. NBA Scouts that saw him, probably know a thing or two.

This generation is probably the least skilled, not the most skilled. Majority have no post game. Majority have no concept of moving without the ball. They look so great offensively because their defenders are severely handicapped by the rules that are in place. The actual concept of what constitutes a legal dribble has been bent to allow them to consistently carry/double dribble, in addition to how many of the stars are allowed to have multiple pivot foots and thus travel when the situation suits them. The officials often bend over backwards to accomadate the shortcomings and bad habits that they have picked up from pick up ball and AAU. The fact that so many are playing fewer and fewer college games if any at all means they arrive in the league lacking training in the fundamentals but still with a certain level unrealistic expectations that stunts their further growth as a player. Too often their overall development is stunted by the team that drafts them, dependent upon the competence of those in charge and how well they are committed to it AND how much the player is committed and sold on it. If his ego is massive that may be a hard sell.
@coreyYAPPS

I would agree with you that they don't play the game as well as we did X NBA players Etc most people believe this generation is more skilled. A critique based on the worst game he played all summer. Why only this one game when he dominated in almost every other one? The critique fails to mention that Flagg averaged 26.9 points, 11.9 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 4.5 blocked shots per contest across 17 eybl games. You'd never know he did so by watching this video. No other eybl player was close to those stats. I don't think this young man is the 2nd coming of Lebron or Jordan, but for God's sake, he was 16 years old in this video. He grew up in rural Maine and is currently far from a complete player. Give him time to grow into his body. Also it would have been nice to praise those areas he was amazing at this summer which includes blocking shots and passing. You went out of your way to compliment everything possible about AJ Dybantza. With Flagg you are hypercritical of virtually his entire game. Is there an agenda here?

Thats why is so hard to see a rookie balling since day 1 in the NBA, they need time in tank teams to gain play time to play good ball because they never had good coaching all their HS and College carrers and thats horrible to franchises who dont want to spend 3 years after drafting a top prospect to finally get some results....

This is spot on. AAU basketball and modern day high school basketball do nothing to teach kids the fundamentals of basketball anymore. Players are just playing iso basketball and shooting threes for the cameras so that courtside films, ballislife, slam HS and all the other high school basketball media sites can post their highlights.

You tried to knock him for playing 16u but failed to mention he only did so bc Maine has no 17u team and he wanted to play with his twin brother one last time who clearly wasn’t ready for 17u, you also didn’t show any of his team USA film when he was 15 playing on the 17u squad and won mvp, he also won the NBPA top 100 mvp, where AJ dybantsa and Cameron boozer also where at; you picked his worse game to date and are now implying you know more than actual NBA and College scouts; all of the NBA players you coached literally have film of games like this at the high school level as well especially at 16 years old

I sure someone could have taken game clips of LeBron James at the same age and broke down everyone of his bad possessions and bad habits. But someone could also have taken games clips of LeBron James at that age which had you salivating. All that to say, Cooper's weaknesses can erased with good coaching. I don't think anyone questions his talent.

You are correct. Everyone has weaknesses. And other teams focus on them. It’s why LeBron has 4 rings in 20 years. Welcome to scouting.
@nysaxman
@nysaxman 11 ай бұрын
@@DorianGroup82 Exactly. And if Cooper works on his weaknesses (as LeBron and every great player does) he too can play 15+ years and win multiple rings in the NBA. It's up to him and how hard he works, and of course the chemistry of the team(s) he play for. Because no high school age player is NBA perfect. Not Lebron, Kobe, Kevin Garnett, Cam Boozer or whoever. There's going to be a learning curve mixed in with the highlight reel dunks and ankle breakers.

@@curtisvenom32 he responded to me with pseudo-scouting nonsense. It's the Larry Bird syndrome. Cooper Flagg is white and damn good. So every black scout has to point out any and every weakness. But you notice how he had nothing critical to say about Cam Boozer's game? Supposedly he's NBA ready. And Cooper isn't. They both will have a learning curve on the next level. But I'll pick Cooper over Cam. Cooper can be a star. Cam will mostly likely be like his father. He'll play 10 plus years in the NBA and make a lot of money. He'll be a good solid rotation player. But a star?

Within the first minute when he was saying Cooper won't have all these people around him when he gets to the NBA, I was thinking that he sounds a lot like the people who said that about Lamelo Ball.

First video of yours I’ve seen. I played for a D1 practice team (for men and women), played some pro-am and semi-pro as well. Initially, I presumed from the title/thumbnail that this was just clickbait hate. However, your assessments were spot on to everything the D1 coaches preached. This was an excellent breakdown and shows how easily a D2-D1 athlete of comparable size could shut CF down. Subscribed.

This guy is not very objective. He also does not rate Larry Bird as one of the top NBA players of all time. I have watched every video that includes Flagg. Sure, he has weaknesses. So did Jordan (even in college). Overall, Flagg is one the best young players in the U.S. It's his court awareness and passing that puts him a notch above most of his peers.

Even in the NBA, Jordan and Kobe both needed the very best basketball coach of all time (Phil Jackson) to get Jordan and Kobe to play winning basketball instead of selfish ghetto ball. Bird didn't even need a head coach at all.
