Oh my goodness, what a great story, I'm so mesmerised, I can't wait to visit 🐓 dero maneqyia next time I visit Addis Abeba. Let's promote our beautiful Ethiopia there many historical and cultural places that attract tourists above all the hospitality of the great Ethiopian people. I love you a lot, from your brother Eritrean.
I am sending this information from Miami, Florida. I was born in the center of Doro Manekia, along the road of Dej. Afewerk street, in 1940. I was baptized in Saint George Cathedral. Your program brought a very old memories. Thank you very much indeed. My childhood memories of the place of my birth, Doromanekia, is different and pleasant. Let me take you along Dej. Afewerk street starting from the old municipality, passing through the center and until you reach cinema Ampir. When you start walking in this direction, on you right you will first find the house of Ras Adefrisew and on your left that of Hakim Workineh. Hakim Workineh in his childhood was taken by the British to England together with Alemayehu, Emperor Teodros's son. When you continue walking you will find Woz. Azalech's compound and on your left that of Tesfamriam Gedela, an Eritrean who fought on the side of Ethiopia during the Italo-Ethiopian war. When you reach the center of Doromanekia, on your left you will find Abdul Jabar's shop. Abdul Jabar was a Yemeni merchant. He was very generous. About 25 mts to your right you will find Ato Shibeshi Alemu"s Tej Bete. This was the only Tej Bet in the whole area of Doromanekia and Piassa. Gashe Shibeshi was kind and very generous. Standing again in the center and facing toward Cinema Ampir and if you take the road to your left you will reach the building of Aristic Printing press. On the left side of that building there used to be coroconcha road which takes you to Bik-eniq. From Bik-iniq comes Seleshi Paste who ended up to be very close friend and security chief of Mengistu Hailemariam. From the center again if you continue walking toward cinema Ampire, on your right you will pass Ato Taye's house. Nesibu Taye who was a Dergue member and a close friend of Mengistu Hailemariam was born there. If you continue walking and pass cinema Ampir, and the emperor's statue and cross the asphalted road thereafter, you inter Serategna sefer where Marie Armide comes from. Before becoming a singer Marie was a the only qualified hairdresser in town. Because it's proximity to Piasa, Doromankia was the cultural center of Addis Abeba. All the cinema halls of Addiss Abeba, namely Ampir, Ethiopia and Adowa, and Ager Fikir were located near and around Doro Manekia. For those who cann't afford these places, there was also free cinema in Russian library which was located in the vicinity of the current municipality building. Again in the area where the municipality was build there was a field, Chew Meda, where we used to play football. Samuel store is only a walking distance from Doro Manekia. Samuel was an Armenian who was the first in the country to import modern dresses like Jeans and others to Ethiopia. Doro Manekia was small, where everyone knows the other. All the languages and religion was represented here and the people were living in total harmony. Cont.....

I’m in my mid 70’s, my childhood fondest memories are intact. I was born and raised in Ras Mekonnen deldey area. So piassa and doromanekia were a stone throw away from where I was raised. When you mentioned Samuel suke, I remember getting my first wrangler jeans from that store, which incidentally was located next to Darmar shoe store. Thanks for sharing our mutual memories.
