Kaido is in a weird place generationally i realized looking at everybody's age. He's more than a decade older than Shanks and Doflamingo but 15 years younger than Big Mom. I'd definitely say Kaido's generation is the failure generation considering he's the only world class guy to come out of it. My headcanon is he probably killed any pirate who was worth a damn in his generation before setting up his pirate crew to start recruiting them after he realized his generation was sorry af.

Buggy was content being a local pirate. Shanks knew he couldn't emulate Roger just yet and built his rep in the New World. The Warlord system enabled a lot of pirates to cruise along without fear of punishment and oppress people. Jinbe was the only one who actually did something with his title for the good of others. Luffy is also the first pirate since Roger to even try go all the way in the Grand Line, so that inadvertently starts off the new Pirate Age, awakening dormant powers and encouraging others like the Supernovas to also go on a journey. The previous era didn't have any figure like that, so everyone just carved out their own space and was content with it.

Some of them got hit by a hard dose of reality. An example being Gecko Moria. He got defeated so soundly that his powers are a commentary on what kind of person he is, “a shadow of the man he use to be.” The New World, more specifically the Yonko are dream killers. You either have enough power to stand up against them or you have to submit to them. And, only the four of them had the power to really stand up against them. White Beard kept his dream of family alive till the end. Big Ma kept pursuing part of her dream of expanding her family and eating good stuff. Kaido kept on looking for ways to die. Big Ma and Kaido are still both interested in being Pirate King to do e extent. Kaido did give up on the “I’m Joy Boy” thing though. I think it’s more “you aren’t allowed or afforded to have a dream when the system (powerful people) won’t allow you to advance and they actively oppress and have you conform.”

Given his extreme degrees of Haki, and Roger's own extreme Haki, Roger's statements about Joyboy in the past, and the way Shanks helped Luffy grow.....I think its safe to say both had an understanding that all this was already coming, and their role was to help it happen. It can't be a coincidence that a man with his means and knowledge didn't understand the gravity of Luffy eating that fruit, and there's even less reason to believe it Given that he then gave Luffy the drive to be who he is with that hat, and the sacrifice of his arm. I don't think Shanks goal was EVER to succeed Roger, I think his goal has always been to see it through and bring joyboy back to the world, which means being one of his final bosses before he can reach king of freedom status.

Reminds me of the Generation X types. They talked so much shit and claimed so much promise and optimism but completely failed to follow through on their goals and dreams for the future. Wasted potential and Absolute disappointments who still complain and do NOTHING to this day.
