Fifth in figures and then 6th in the short after a fall on a flying sit, Dorothy needed to win the free to make the podium. She did just that with more technical content than she would do the next year to win the Olympics, winning her second successive world silver medal behind Dianne DeLeeuw who was more consistent over the three phases of the competition.

What impressed me here was the sheer speed. She just seemed to fly across the ice. Do skaters today with all the quads even skate this fast? It was interesting to watch even with only two double axels! I know everyone talks about transitions these days but fast, smooth, flowing crosscuts are a joy to watch. The flying camels were beautiful to look at. Do these exist in competition anymore without all kinds of contortions to rack up points? What surprised me was how small the layback was here. She has a great layback and it was just a very short one here. She made more of it the next year at the Olympics. Thanks again Floskate for posting these rarities. Keeping the beauty of true figure skating -- from its glory era -- alive.

@@Itstonytime77 I agree. Much prefer seeing fast crossovers, with transitions only going into jumps. I hate seeing constant footwork. I'm from the 6.0 era myself, and think it was way more dynamic to watch. I really don't like modern spins that much, and think they're really hard on skaters backs (particularly if you're not naturally flexible!)

Her air position and take off position wouldn't have been good for a 3A. But if she had been training with modern methods, she probably would have gotten it. Her 2Lutz seems so easy! @shimmeringfairydust3275
@shimmeringfairydust3275 2 жыл бұрын
@@lullabelle71 you entirely miss the point. Jumps aren’t that exciting, plus they often ruin young bodies. Katerina Witt qualified for the Olympics when she was almost 30. Can you imagine any female skater doing that today? Thanks to Russia, most female skaters are washed up by age 17 - or they sure aren’t medal contenders. Have you ever watched John Curry? There is something so magical about him. He interpreted music in a way no one had before or since. He could do the most difficult jumps performed then, but his stroking and edging can’t be touched by any of today’s competitors. Plus, his spins were exquisite - never seen a straighter back on a sit spin. His spread eagle into a double axel at the very end of his Olympic gold medal winning free skate in 1976 was magnificent. You are certainly entitled to your opinion - doesn’t mean I am right and you’re wrong but I can’t quite understand fans who prefer extreme athletic skating. The musical interpretation and artistry were always the most important things in skating during Curry & Hamill’s day, plus skaters in that era trained much harder since they had figures and longer SP and free skates. I still think they need two divisions of skating: athletic and artistic, plus maybe medals for the three skaters who have the best overall combined scores in the two divisions. Share the wealth.

@@waynehentley4332 first, I am not of the younger generation and second, all sports evolve! Second, I am not a fan of quadruples for the impact it has on the spine, hips and knees. But I sure like triples when well executed, in a program balanced with a good artistic part. The transitions and skating skills, if well executed, will show deep edges and good extension on well defined movement. And I think that when there's no musicality, it is not a complete program. Figure skating is both a sport and an art. I also love how Ice dance has evolved, the same way dance has. It's a question of what we prefer. I'm not taking away anything Mrs Hamill did, she was the greatest in her time. But most sports evolve and Skate Canada is going to raise the components (artistic) score to balance the total score better and to encourage skaters to render a more artistic program, not just a training-like jumps and spins parcour.

I miss this kind of skating. Superb stroking, velvety edging & just an amazing ability to interpret music. Now it’s all about gymnastic moves & difficulty of jumps - which can only be done by young teens. Dorothy was 19 when she won gold…still a teen, but a mature one. Did figures, longer short & free skates. Skaters today have no idea how easy they have it - the compulsory figures took YEARS to perfect. Yeah. Watching that competition was dullsville, but it still gave the sport its name. It needs to be renamed “artistic skating” since no figures are involved. Such a shame.

@@AT-jm4dl For the '75 Nationals I do not know about the SP, but Dorothy only completed one double axel compared with Wendy's three. For the '77 Nationals, remember Wendy skated in quite a bit of darkness as the lights went out just at the end of Fratianne's LP. I believe the judges factored that into her performance, and she skated well. Her spins were superior to anyone of the time, and her artistic impression of the music was also great. As good as Linda was, I always felt she seemed to skate slower than others - perhaps that was because she was so petite.

@@biff5856 there was plenty of time to practice free skating! Yes, we had to do figures for hours every week, but I never felt I had too little free skating practice. Comparing then and now, myself and the skaters who competed with me were way better than a lot of the kids I see coming through now. It takes them ages to get jumps at the beginning. At least in my country anyway. We were doing double lutz in competition at the 1st test level (back when there were 6 levels, 5 to get to senior). Kids now are doing single lutz to axel, and restrictions are put on what they can attempt in the programme. Skaters did less difficult jumps way back in these times (like in the video) than now because the equipment and techniques have evolved over time. It's a natural progression, not a lack of time and practice. Hope that makes sense 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⛸️

@@lindatannock I'm 78 and have seen them all, not just on old footage. The skaters back then had tremendous edge control and plenty of strength to complete the triples and quads if they were deemed necessary. Dorothy was very strong. Her flying sit spin was a monster. Her delayed axel was fabulous. They had technique on tap to whatever. Figures were just too important. Look what that did to Janet Lynn.
@wip1664

In order to do a triple or a quad jump well, the skater has to use a lot of speed and power to propel, and then to know how to retract that speed and power. This type of required athleticism is easy to induce "beauty and artistry". It is very animalistic, like a bird or a cat in motion. And in figure skating the skater's feet are blades moving on a near frictionless surface. They also do doubles in the programs. Some can just skate/move "better" and are more beautiful to watch. As for the program as a whole, the choreo is also important. This performance is excellent, and wonderful to watch. Her movement across the ice and her jumps are clean and precise. And I do think that triples and quads have contributed to the beauty/artistry of this sport.

@@floskate I calculated these scores mathematically :). Dorothy's total was 224.53, the sum of compulsory+short program was 119.23, so 105.30 remained. Your video has the first mark, sum it up and get 52.40. 105.30 - 52.40 = 52.90 - the sum of the artistic marks. Internet has had a list of all 6.0 ratings since 1969 and there are none for 1975, two options remain: 2 5.8 and 7 5.9, or 1 5.7 and 8 5.9. But the second option is very doubtful. If I'm not wrong :)

I wonder if she ever considered trying to win a second gold in Lake Placid? She certainly could have won it again.

Not without triples I don't think. Apparently she did triple sal's in practice but never did them in competition to my knowledge. Plus it was back when pro skating was lucrative, especially with a newly minted OGM round your neck. TV specials with Gene Kelly and a huge contract with an ice show or four more years of early mornings and figures and not earning anything. It was absolutely the best move at that time for her to turn pro.

No. The top 4 girls at Lake Placid all had at least two triples in their LPs. Linda and Denise did triple-double combination in the their SP. Dorothy was also out skated by Linda at the 76 Nationals, who dazzled the crowd with her effortless triples. Dorothy knew she would moved on; Standing on the medals podium, Dorothy leaned over to Linda and said, "Next year this will be all yours kiddo." (Can't remember if that was 100% the exact quote, but I read about that in an article profiling Linda for the Lake Placid Game.) Plus I'm sure lucrative professional offers were coming in like crazy for Dorothy after she won gold. She would've been crazy not to take advantage of that. I think Dorothy would have been competitive in the 79 SP at Nationals and maybe even at the SP at Worlds. The required jump in the SP combo was the 2flip. Linda won the SP at Worlds and at Nationals too , I think, with the 2flip-2toe combo. Dorothy did that combination in 76, and her program, skating skills, style, and performance and audience connection were much better than Linda's. I can totally see Dorothy winning the 79 Nationals SP and then getting 2nd or 3rd in the LP, depending on how Lisa Marie skated. To be honest though, Linda's 79 Carmen Program was just not good at all. So Dorothy could've won the LP there too.

No. Triples were fairly rare for women's skating prior to 1976 although the gold and bronze medallists at this event both did a triple toeloop. Dorothy was the last Olympic champion to win without a triple jump.

@@piramis7615 I was referring to worlds not Europeans where she did land it. Burka did triple sal in 1962 worlds also but it was underrotated. Same with Janet Lynn's triple toe and sal attempts from 1967-1971 and Seyfert and Maskova's triple loop attempts at 1968 and 1969 Europeans respectively. Jana Mrazcova was attempting triple salchow as early as 1960 in Squaw Valley at the Olympics.
