Yes, Midori and Tonya were simply in another league. But Tonya was not as consistent with her triple axel as Midori was, although Tonya did have a Midori-like period with such consistency in her triple axel, and that was in 1991.
@jondavwal134 жыл бұрын
Midori had this over Tonya in almost every jump. Midori was always in perfect position in the air. Tonya starts to tilt on her way down on every triple but it didn’t affect the others. Midori’s is hands down the best in history. My second favorite was Nagasu’s at the Olympics although a one off really doesn’t give you bragging rights.

Which one is my favorite. That's easy. Midori hands down. No one to this day (June 29 19) has performed a better triple axel. Her triple axel at the 1990 worlds LP in Halifax was so incredible that the UK and Canadian commentators said it was probably the best triple axel in the competiton including the men. Her triple axel at Albertville in 92 at the 3 minute 10 second mark of a 4 minute LP was so unbelievable that the olympic channel honored it as an impossible moment at the olympic games. Midori is the greatest technical skater ever and the queen of the triple axel. If she was in her prime today, she would be landing quads.
@schlagsahne3945 жыл бұрын
I read somewhere that she actually tried to do a quad but when she decided not to train it because she noticed that her body (leg or ankle, can't remember exactly) wouldn't be able to withstand the impact of landing
@lsrasr1585 жыл бұрын
@@schlagsahne394 I saw a japanese video a while ago with english subtitles where Midori was being interviewed and talking about her 1988 to 1992 years. I think she said she had attempted triple axels and perhaps quads at 14 or 15 but had fractured her ankle. Her coach, Machiko Yamada who Midori lived with, then forbid Midori attempting them. She then said that when she only finished 5th in Calgary with all the triples she did vs. what Katarina did in winning the gold, she decided she had to introduce the triple axel into her skating to win on the international stage. It is amazing how quickly she did it. She barely missed landing a clean 3A at the 1988 skate america, she then landed the 3A at a home town event before landing it internationally at the 1988 NHK.

Midori Ito for her incredible height, Mao Asada for having the most aesthetically pleasing ones.

I think the extremely height, full rotation and "vibrance" are keys to make a 3A "pleasant to watch". I think both Midori and Tonya had that height and vibrancy. But Midori's leg position and Tonya's WILD axis made them look like there was something wrong.

Good effort from all these skaters but Midori Ito truly is the best jumper in the history of ladies’ figure skating. Although some people might think the other skaters included in this clip have so-called “cleaner” position in the air, I would beg to differ. Most of the other skaters (sole exception being Tanya Harding) learned to execute this jump by relying on really tight turns to complete the 3.5 rotation, as opposed to powerful take off. Consequently, most of them lack height and distance. Midori’s triple axel has the most height and distance because of her athleticism and how she takes off. Tanya arguably managed to get the same height, but she couldn’t quite match the distance because Tanya’s technique somehow would cause her to lean out out of the axis and backwards,, which forced her to have to re-center her body and subsequently lose the momentum to create good distance. Midori on the other hand is good at keeping her body position either centered or at least leaning forward (instead of backwards), Ultimately Midori pole vaults her triple axel, while the rest hopped and twisted their bodies into a pencil.

Just because I absolutely adore Mao, I'm going to throw in some more incredible records she has accomplished with the triple axel. 1. First woman to land a triple axel in the short program at the Winter Olympics 5. First woman to land two triple axel jumps in the same program There is so much more to this tremendously talented (and in my eyes, slightly underrated) athlete than the axel, her signatures also includes her intricate stepsequences, spirals, and one hand biellmans.

While there are many things to appreciate about most of these ladies' axels (Rika's is tight and has fantastic flow and speed coming out, Mao's is light and airy, Liza has rock-solid technique ), Midori reaches a height and distance that are unsurpassed to this day. It's mind-boggling how high she gets and makes you wonder if she has springs in her legs. Plus, there was never a doubt about underrotations, even though she rotated visibly slower than every woman/girl in this video. And yet, even in real-time you could see her finishing the rotations in the air. Truly unmatched.

Tonya Harding: • First American woman to land a triple axel in competition. • The first woman ever to land a triple axel in a short program. • The first woman ever to land a triple axel in combination. • The first woman ever to land 2 triple axels in the same competition. Let’s never forget that. Thank you, great video! Btw, Tonya and Midori are the best... The others are nothing compared to this two.

Mao Asada is queen of this, period. And even though she had one mistake in the Olympics, her Bells of Moscow program was a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Love that she came back for Worlds and skated it clean!

midori's always amazes me because she's so petite, and has the strength to jump so high.

After retiring, Midori spoke out on a Japanese TV program. Before she jumped the triple axel, she went full speed sliding to the wall, and then she jumped the triple axel in one go. Other retired skaters laughed at that because it was too dangerous and scary for them.

Spite the triple axel being a very challenging jump, these women make it seem so flawless. 👏🏼👏🏼

Midori Ito is by far the best imho. I like Rika's too

Midori would always own this element. Kostornaya also has good 3As and Kihira's look effortless.

Kihira and Liza had great 3A but the height on Midori's still incredible and Asada is the most pleasing to the eye.

I love how 3A though still being rare is becoming a common and achievable. Once it was unheard of. Kudos to these brave and devoted ladies for pushing their own limits and the boundaries of female figure skating.

I love how Liza made her 3A look so causal after winning it back, how crispy is the one of Rika. And I believe Midori could have pull quads considering he hight of her jumps if she was trained this decade.
