Is there actually a difference in their eating behaviors compared to let's say dwarf goats? Manly brousing vs. only browsing? I'm still new to this.

sheep graze better

Really cool!!! Are you doing the crossing? Or is it a line breed at this point? Do you have to do much help with lambing?
@LedgemereHeritageFarm2 жыл бұрын
Crossing. They have always lambed just fine on their own (hope I didn’t just jinx myself). The only lambing that ever went south was with a Wensleydale unfortunately. Thank You for watching

I may have missed the info where you say which breed is better?

I guess I was showing what I knew about each so that my viewers could decide for themselves. I really like the Dorper and Katahdin crosses. Thank You for watching

I have a flock of Katahdins in California. I love them!. Had a Katahdin/Dorper ewe who never seemed to shed out so we sheared her every year. Do you see that issue? I was thinking of getting a Dorper/Katahdin ewe but not sure I want to have more sheep that require shearing.
@LedgemereHeritageFarm9 ай бұрын
I was lucky that she would shed out, but I have found that they aren’t as fertile as straight up Katahdins so I am going to abandon that endeavor and stick with them . Thank you for watching

@@LedgemereHeritageFarmthanks for that info---I will skip that opportunity and stick to my beloved Katahdins!

I have a Dorper/Katahdin 13 month old ram that's either going to market or the butcher in the next few days. He's zero maintenance but he's awnery. If I go with the later I'll let you know how he tastes lol
@LedgemereHeritageFarm2 жыл бұрын
They tend to get mean after about 10-2 mos. Best to get rid of him than to take the risk of getting hurt. Thank You for watching

@@LedgemereHeritageFarm too late. He go me real good last night a little before I watched your video. He's been pushing on me and being very annoying for a little while but that was it. Last night he rammed me from behind and knocked me about 10 feet. I'm not small so that's the only reason I don't have a broken pelvis, back or his. He got a few good smacks as I hobbled inside. I didn't get much done today at all. He was a bottle baby from another farm and was good until a few months ago when the lead ram got sick for a couple weeks. Since then he's been trying to assert his dominance on everything with a pulse. He was too close to humans like you pointed out. Big mistake.

Do you cross a dorper ewe with a katahdin ram, or the other way around?
@LedgemereHeritageFarm2 жыл бұрын
Either way works, but I used a Dorper ram

Why did you choose Dorper ram and Katahdin ewe instead of the other way? I'm in the midst of deciding for myself. Awesome video, I look forward to watching more!

Can you milk and use the milk from Katahin sheep and not use them for meat?
@LedgemereHeritageFarm2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but they don’t give milk for as long as other sheep, like Fresians. I have milked them before and it’s fine as long as you rapidly cool it. Thank You for watching 😊

I've heard that you don't want to keep a Dorper ram lamb as a pet, but you can turn your back on a Katahdin ram.
@LedgemereHeritageFarm5 ай бұрын
i wouldn’t turn my back on a katahdin either. they can be very dangerous
@johannsgarden2020Ай бұрын
Never turn your back on ANY ram. Even a small ram or a friendly ram. Normal ram behavior is to hit each other to determine their rank. They will want to know where they stand with you too, increasingly so if you make a pet of them since they will treat you the same as they would another sheep.
