The history of the Alter Markt dates back to the 12th century, when merchants would showcase their wares to the people of Dortmund. Today, the Alter Markt is the social center of the city, where locals shop, eat, and drink in the boutiques, restaurants, and bars that surround the historic square. It is also home to some of the city's most impressive buildings.
Sights around the Alter Markt include the neo-Renaissance Altes Stadthaus and the Bläserbrunnen, built in 1901, whose water is dyed yellow when Borussia Dortmund wins a championship. In summer, you can enjoy a cool drink at one of the tables set up by various restaurants in the square.
