I've discovered only recently the Warlords series and played the first one. It is now in my tbs games routine along with Homm, Disciples and Age of wonders. I love this little gem❤

Man you're really bringin back nostalgia of my childhood and also for that dos game period where games weren't refined into genres and cookie cutter styles yet, everything was trying it's darndest to just be fun and awesome in it's own way and that experimentality, I'm going to have to start playing some of these ones I never heard of, and the ones I did heard of but never did play. Love it dude.

I really like the fact that you've got so often something interesting and unexpected to show :) I didn't know earlier about such games as Full Metal Planet (and it certainly grabbed my attention!) or Millenium: Return to earth (rather not in my orbit of interest, but I didn't heard about it earlier). Have hope that some of those games (especially Full Metal Planet) will join the GOG offer sooner or later (not counting those that they already have).

Thank you! The idea behind the Time Travel series was to cover one game for each of the most active years of DOS (1988-1997) in a particular genre, and to make sure that (if possible) that game would not be one of the triple-A hits for the year. But one of the average, either good and fun, but not the best, or just interesting and unusual. :)

The later published Spaceward Ho! was often called the improved version of Reach For The Stars. The funky box cover, funny graphics (propeller-driven spaceships, cowboy planets...), depth of play and multiplayer over network (disabled in the later iOs version) made it really popular in nerdy places with a ready network.

My favorite turn based strategy hidden gem is Genesia (aka Ultimate Domain) from 1994. The gameplay is a bit hard to categorize but maybe it could be described as turn based The Settlers + Populous. The atmosphere is unique as well, the game proceeds with such a slow pace it feels cozy and dream like. At least until the diseases hit, or an enemy starts dropping bombs on your village from their hot air balloon.

Well this was never going to be my list was it? I appreciate Reach for the Stars for what it is, even if it’s not for me. If you could have included newer console games, notably Advance Wars, Might & Magic: Clash of heroes & Final Fantasy: Tactics I’d have been here for it. 😄 Never mind that though, I’m so impressed to hear you pronounce “Celtic” correctly, being a Celt my self, thank you!

Well, the next one should more for you as it's gonna be about adventure games, so hopefully, you'll enjoy it. :) I am thinking of getting into the older 8 and 16bit consoles eventually, though I still have my "Nintendo worries". They have a very specific way of "appreciating" their fans. xD And reading "c" in "Celtic" as "k" just never felt right in my head, so while I'd like to take the credit for being educated in the matter, it's all my brain's doing, totally independent of my lucid self, and it did what it deemed correct. "Correct" which is actually read as "k". See, also its work outside of my scope of control. xD

I had Reach For The Stars way back, still play it occasionally. One mild annoyance, the Resource Points counter is a signed 16-bit integer. Under some conditions you can get it over 32767, it'll go negative and the game will nope you out into DOS. Adds an extra edge to the game.
@OldAndNewVideoGames
@OldAndNewVideoGames 3 ай бұрын
Well, such were the times, I suppose. I remember playing my favourite map in Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and turining the counter on Skeletons in Necromancer's army. You could not have more than 32,768 of them in one stack. Well, I think it was actually 32,767, and when you got the last it turned negative... I think. Still, it was annoying as hell, as I constantly had to split them into individual separate groups.

@@OldAndNewVideoGames Lol, yes, the heady days of "what's error-checking?". Alphaman was another example (I still play that occasionally). Once you'd completed the game's objective you could play on indefinitely, in principle. In practice the player's character stats were a mix of six signed 8 bit, one signed 16 bit and one signed 33 bit integers, only one of which was bounds checked. Triggering the sign bit on the hit points counter would kill the player and go into the game over routine, triggering it on any other stat would would break the game and nope you out to DOS.

If you play to avoid getting your units hit at all then it is manageable. Just let your units dig on a hill to enhance range, lure the enemy using hummer and avoid getting hit. But some missions are almost impossible, especially from the first 3-4 theaters.

I somehow missed the entire turn-based strategy genre. Does Heroes of Might and Magic count? :S Anyway, I'm sure I've been missing out. These are all interesting games and I'd like to check them out. Celtic tales in particular, since the historic accuracy sounds nice and I was into Irish stuff at some point. Overall, another cool video, it shows that you like the genre. :) I know you were quoting the song, but I did like Rush Hour. :D Also, tickled my RPG what? XD

It does, but it's a mix. Mostly strategy, with some RPG, and a itty bitty bit of adventuring. It's also a well know triple-A game, so couldn't end up in this video. :) Irish stuff? I like Guinness. It's yummy. I wasn't picky really, whatever RPG you had, I tickled it. You might've not felt it, but I've tried. ;) The next one's gonna be about Adventure games. I've recorded voice overs for it tonight, and they may even feature a bit of thunderstorm here and there in the background. Not as a special effect, but cause we had it here today. xD

"i am sure your mother is great" is another way of saying that she is 5x L tho XD (i do appretiate that if it was intentional and even if it was not) (reach for the stars) surprisingly lively followers of this general style of games has brought in way too manny games (star control being one i failed at recently). even tho this is not exact game type i like but i am lad that its quality titles go this far back. (Milenium) dammit humans you blew it up again... (also return to planet earth was collection of science fiction stories released in err 83 or 86) not quite sure i would manage it well but the gameplay dose sound bit easier than reach. (Full metal planet( oh hell yeah what a title! i wish it came with some propper metal soundtrack too... but alas its probably more of a full metal jacket book/movie based name than anything that would be in game in any appretiable degree. missed opportunity in my opinion. Also i am not smart how dare you accuse me of such nonsence, clearly i am the dumber of the dumb duo. Sorry for whining i hate being complimented even if it is not directed at me per se just general group i am part of so my whining on the subject is specificaly about me being potentialy the one complimented as thats the worst thing anyone can do to failure of my calibre. i think i had a point about the game hmm... .proto dune II dose appeal to me tho i do not remember more open ended things like diplomacy. i imagine if someone would do EEIIEX (yes the Art of war expansion) in science fiction i think i would adore it. maybe throw in the terrotory management from rise of nations rather than fixed borders hmmmm... sorry i am droolign over myself there and hey are RTS not turn based. errr yeah i dont think much can beat civ / civ in space, for even i - the useless offten forgotten nation leader am finding myself enjoying both civ III and the space civ (Alpha centauri i THINK its basicaly Civ III, since it plays nigh on same). whoups i keep getting distracted. right it dose sound faily intriguing based upon the games provided for ilustration of its nature. (perfect general) oh yes the first big filter thought the gaming history - if players can get over how graphics are not always best in incredible titles (because dev teams had other, ore important things to do right) there can be an absolute gem. As someone who spent nearly 80 hours playing Transport Fever 2 i can assure you i still strongly prefer transport tycoon deLuxe (or its open version anyways ) the less graphics but good use of the ones the game has are something i've recently been pondering. because i do think TTD is unchaallanged precisely ebcause of its graphics being used masterfully - you can see everything well enough all the systems make perfect sense as they are and all the stats you could ever want are avalable (no pie charts but line graphs are good too). and it did it on 8bits in i think 92 or so and DOS in 93. sure OTTD added a lot but aside for tramways and trolleybuses i realy do not feel the need to use most of its systems. i still build click by click rather than drag for most part *shrugs* I do think many lovely games with apparently hideous graphics are sadly snubbed because of the overt focus on less important things than gameplay elements. Oh it even focuses on quick to pick up ideology... yayy. that is impressive. (Spellcross: the last battle) i think one of most dishartening things about the game was that there was de-facto no base building, but i guess than it'd just be X-com just with demons. It is surprisingly tactical at times and i managed to finish it so its not that hard on easy difficulity. Later on in the campaign i still relied on highly upgrated (and converted to Psi corps) light infantry (if i memory serves right you loose some EXP when changing to different unit but not all, so maybe * - *** loss out of 10 or somehting, there is also cap on maximum stars i beleive hence the brave conversion therapy for my elite infantry). More experimental things like Lazer Piranha or Gauss gun tanks did not exactly excite me i was far more interested in than contemporary military vs. horde of other side (yep thats what they are called the enemies i mean) because it sounds fun having huge troop fighting much smaller but technicaly advaced one. It resutled in my all time favourite failures of mine - challanging an isle based fortress and its units with two heavy tanks... i dealt with err hwacha equivalent, took out most all units only to have my tanks gnawed to death by bunch of doggos because i prioritised higher tier enemies and they close distance in unsurmountable numbers. god damit i want it on GoG so bad... i have not played in it DECADE!
