This is Kacee's First Time Watching Reaction to the movie Galaxy Quest (1999). The cast of a science fiction show from the 1970s, who are now eking out a livelihood through reruns and science fiction conventions is beamed onboard an alien spacecraft. The group of aliens ask the celebrities for assistance in their attempt to overthrow the repressive rule in their solar system because they believe the cast's epic on-screen dramas are historical records of real-life exploits.

Star Trek TOS started in the 60's so the nerds of that time had something to geek out with. Also at star trek cons the actors like Michael Dorn(Worf) and LeVar Burton(Geordi) respond to tech questions and even at times explain the lore themselves or how the Enterprise works and which decks hold what.

Gwen is basically a sex object type trope in the original series, that can only repeat after the computer. However, the Thermians took this as her being the only one able to communicate with the computer, hence it ignores every query from anyone else.

Enrico Colantoni (Mathesar) thought of the signature way the Thermians speak and move when he auditioned for the movie (he actually based the speech pattern on a vocal exercise that stage actors often do to warm up their voices before performing). The filmmakers loved his audition so much that they hired him for the role of Mathesar and put him in charge of teaching the actors how to act like a Thermian.

My father is a fan of the old 60's Star Trek and introduced me to it when I was a small child. Then we watched The Next Generation and the rest of the 90's Star Trek together. We saw this in a theater together and it was simply a great experience. From the non-referential comedy to the sci-fi and nerd in-jokes, even the 3 aspect ratio changes during the film, it was all so well crafted and with so much heart. One of my favorite movies and theater experiences.

I saw this with my biggest nerd friend (and he could say the same about me). We’re old enough to have seen OST in the mid 70s when it first went into syndication. We never got into STNG however. By the time it came out we had caught the D&D bug and/or were nerding out on different things. A bit of fun trivia: erotic fan fic got started with the OST fandom. It was called Kirk/Spock fiction. If you’ve heard the term “slash fic”, it comes from the “/“ between Kirk and Spock. Once you’ve heard the concept, you can’t watch the original series the same way. The lovers’ triangle between Kirk, Spock, and Dr. McCoy becomes clear. McCoy is the older lover, discarded for the younger, hotter Spock.

He expertly combines several sci-fi tropes and is totally committed to seriousness of his character, which actually makes him even funnier. The other actors get all the credit and he is sadly often not mentioned.

Sigourney Weaver liked her blond wig so much that she kept it after the shoot. Tony Shalhoub in the original script was supposed to be stoned throughout and that's why he looks so chill all the time while eating snacks. Fun Factoid - the NTE prefix for the ship stands for Not The Enterprise.

Yes, Fred was stoned. 😆 Fun Fact: Rockwell's scream was unscripted. If you watch the scene again, Sigourney's startled jump was genuine. ... You are correct, this is less a parody than a love letter to fandom. One thing I noticed was that the reboot appeared 18 years after the first show. That is the same time gap between Star Trek original series and The Next Generation. Oh, if you look closely at Sigourney's lips at the start of the chomper scene, "Screw this!" was _not_ what she said. 😏

The Chomper section is apparently where quite a few edits seemed to have happened since a deleted scene explains why Gwen looks how she does afterwards cause one of Serris' men also makes it through the Chompers until Gwen distracts them by unzipping her suit long enough for the last Chomper to crush them.

I worked on two films that Alan Rickman was in. Bob Roberts and Dogma. I had several conversations with him even though I was at the bottom of the totem pole as far as crew was concerned he took the time to talk to everyone. He was a very humble nice guy.

"She went from Ripley to this." Sigourney was actually excited to play against type and be the bimbo in this movie. It was brilliant casting. "Young Laredo" was a Wesley Crusher gag. Basically the "boy wonder" trope. "Why are you so casual?" In the original version, before they edited it to get a PG rating, Fred was supposed to be a stoner. That's why he also always has a bag of munchies. "I would have taken my 'cap' off." As much as he complains about being typecast in his role, he never takes that prosthetic off... even when he's at home. Sam Rockwell is such an underrated actor.

Something most people don’t realize about Alan Rickman he was just as great comedically as he was dramatically, between this and dogma he really showed his comedic chops. My favourite line is “but the animal is inside out…..(boom)and it explode.” Such a hard line to say straight faced.

For us, yes, it was comics and now it is a dream to see this whole Marvel Universe brought to life as I was much more of a Marvel fan than DC. Tim Allen as the egotistical star who irritated other cast members was based upon the dynamic between William Shatner (Captain Kirk) and the cast from original Star Trek. And him getting fed up and telling the kid everything was just a TV show was a direct nod to Shatner's appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1986 when he told hardcore Trekkies to "get a life!" . That scene was a well-executed homage to a great skit.

There’s actually an excellent documentary on this movie called ‘Never Surrender.’ It’s a great doc that touches on many of the themes you pointed out - it truly was a love letter to nerd fandom. Recommended watch 👍🏼

​​@@DeRockMedia is it the doc that mentions that Galaxy Quest was originally rated R? I don't remember where I heard that rumor from, but looking back at the film it does seem like it's true. There's a scene where Weaver's character says "forget that!", but her mouth CLEARLY says the words "F*CK THAT!", so it was dubbed over in post. Also Casey mentions Weaver's bewbs being out randomly, and I heard there was a sexaully suggestive scene that was deleted because it would ruin the PG rating, so it was cut out the film. Hence why her bewbs are out the rest of the film with no explanation lol

the reason Weaver's shirt was open later in the movie was from a deleted scene where she was trying to distract one of the aliens, but that scene was cut, but they had her top open the rest of the movie so they of course couldn't reshoot all those scenes, which is why her shirt is closed half the time, and open the other half.

The early part of this movie actually mirrors some of the issues the Star Trek TOS crew faced at conventions before William Shatner received a wakeup call while attending a convention and learning just who was attending for the explicit purpose of seeing him so that he recognized he was already a character model for many of them.

Something I never considered about this film is that is the Thermians based the ship after episodes and schematics from the show, that means that the show runners accidentally invented an actual working spaceship and didn’t realize it, as well as a real time-reversal ability in the Omega 13 device 😂

The sad thing about it is that there was consideration for the continuation of Galaxy Quest on Amazon as a possible show/movie release before Alan Rickman's passing. Currently, there's only been leaks that Simon Pegg was attempting to do something with the IP.

60s nerds rediscovered The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings books and boosted sales tremendously. My older sister would tell us those stories when I was growing up in the late 60s and early 70s. She adapted them to be kid friendly, but the images I have in my mind for certain scenes in the books are the same ones I had when I was a little kid, hearing my older sister tell us those stories for the first time.

Did you recognize that in the scene where Sarris shoots everyone all of them are hit except Guy - the extra that usually dies immediately? PS: A deleted scene shows why her uniform is open like that. PPS: I would really like a continuation of Babylon 5 - not a remake, a continuation. There's also a German 7-episode show from the 1960ties with a very, very small budget but cool characters and plot - Raumpatroullie Orion. I think that would be a good one for a remake.

This was fun rewatching Galaxy Quest and seeing Kacee's reactions for the first time seeing it. There are tons of old shows I'd love to see remakes of like: Mission Impossible, I Spy, It Takes A Thief, Man from U.N.C.L.E., Get Smart, Lost In Space, Land of the Giants, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, The Thunderbirds, Space Patrol, and even Green Lantern and Batman. Think of what they could do with the CGI now. Sorry, I know y'all didn't grow up in the 60's when we saw all of these for the very first time... nothing like any of these shows ever existed before them. And y'all probably haven't seen but a handful of these.

I'm an old-school nerd. Read SF/Fantasy. Played D&D from back when it was AD&D. Was there or the first arcade-style video games. Watched Hawk the Slayer every time it was on TV (usually a weekend afternoon when they had nothing else to broadcast). Saw all the Star Wars and Star Trek movies in the theater first run. Programmed in BASIC on my Atari 800 computer. Collected comics. Was a social outcast. Never had a date in high school. Had parents who rarely understood me. Picked last for sports. Bullied at school. You're right, despite how glorious it sometimes was being a 70s/80s nerd (everything was so shiny and new), it was a rough time. We were the antithesis of cool, and society let us know that at every opportunity. But we endured, we survived, and we changed the world, mostly for the better.

Probably the best running joke in the whole movie isn't even pointed out. Tony Shalhoub's character isn't Asian. He says "Kwan isn't even my real name." But several times when he's "on-camera," he squints his eyes real tight to look more Asian. This likely references Hollywood's tendency toward casting white actors in Asian or other ethnic roles that are very specifically that ethnicity. More recently, this is exemplified by Scarlett Johansson being cast as Major Motoko Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell, but it goes back decades. The two wildest examples are Mickey Rooney being cast as Mr. Yunioshi in Breakfast at Tiffany's, and John Wayne (the man, the myth, the legend) playing Genghis Khan in The Conqueror.

During the whole controversy over the casting, the creator of the source material said that Motoko isn't even suppoaed to look asian. The model could have been played by any woman from any background. Japan in that period of the timeline is almost as mixed as the USA of today or other multi-racial mega-countries die to influx of refugees from many corners of the globe.

Oh Childrens, 1960's nerds had the TV shows the original "Lost in Space", the original "Star Trek", "The Twilight Zone", and "The Outer Limits". "Star Trek: The Next Generation" did have a child join the cast in later seasons (like Tommy). He was Ensign Wesley Crusher, which caused contention among many fans. It would have been so easy for this movie to turn into a mockery of sci-fi and hardcore fandom, but it ended up being a love letter to it. The film managed to laugh with nerd culture and not at it. It's honesty an incredible feat of filmmaking to be able to walk that line, and yet still make an entertaining movie for general audiences.

Nerd culture.. Radiation causing giant insects such as in the film Them! (1954). 1956 was The Forbidden Planet which if you have never watched you should if interested in history of sci-fi. You also had things like the series UFO and Space 1999 Remember the toys for both those shows. You then have the puppets for Stingray (1964), Thunderbirds (1965) and Captain Scarlet (1967) or even the Star Fleet/X Bomber series in the 1980's. Should just add Flash Gordon, Rocket Man for the weekend cinema shows although that was before my time.

It even shows us what would happen if the cast of the original Star Trek series were mistaken for real space heroes where they must fight off an intergalactic warlord. This movie is THREE AMIGOS but in space.

Stay in it until at least episode four. Some people think it's slow in the beginning; it takes three episodes just to "world build." But then it takes off like a rocket (no pun intended). It's sort of an "anti-Trek." There is no perfect utopian future for mankind. We screwed everything up, and even though we went out into space we're still scrapping and fighting and screwing things up. There's no "warp drive"; while it's futuristic, they make it as realistic as possible: "hard" science, real physics. Amazing writing, and amazing characters.

I'm so happy that you picked up on that this is a love letter, it's not a spoof. The scene near the end, where Tim Allen salutes Justin Long is saying this is for the fans, more or less. They never dissed the fans in this movie, they slightly dissed the writing of Star Trek and other shows by pointing out how some tropes were just bad, but even then they acknowledge that the shows had a cultural impact for the fans. The scene with Tim Allen getting upset, is a parody of a Will Shatner bit on Saturday Night Live "Get a Life" . The thing is that fandom is about life balance.

I would like to see Farscape return. If you have not seen the show it is (in my opinion) a great tv series. It originally ran on the Sci-Fi network in the early 90s. Galaxy Quest is a really good movie that tends to be overlooked. It pokes fun at us nerds without being mean. You can tell that the people who made it liked the source material. I was 41 when this came out so I did get all of the references ( in Star Trek, Kirk was always losing his shirt).

They spoofed Farscape in the 200th episode of Stargate. Ben Browder and Claudia Black were cast members at this point, so they did like a 15 second clip, and OMG it's GOLD. Claudia reprises her character, but they thought it'd be funny if Ben didn't 😂 the whole episode is amazing, they're just making fun of themselves for 45 minutes. They spoof the actors, characters, crew, writers, story-building, everything. It's like their own Galaxy-Quest-feel episode, where it's all for the fans. 😆

A reboot I would love to see would be an obscure 90's Sci-Fi show called "First Wave." It didn't have a budget, but it was a unique show about an Alien invasion of Earth in its first wave. Due to the distances, they would transfer their consciousness to empty human "husk" bodies so that they could proceed with their plan. They had interesting weaknesses though. Sex for reproduction in their alien form was painful, so doing it in their human husks was an addictive change for them. Common and basically free table salt had the effect of heroin on them so addiction and discipline was a problem for their plans for taking over Earth. There were aspects of Nostradamus and prophecies that added mystery and drama. I always thought that with more robust writing and a decent budget, that show in a rebooted form could be really special. It just had so many unique aspects to it.

Also real space was constantly in the news, the cold war was on, and the coolest muscle cars ever
