Galaxy Quest is amazing because you don't need to know anything about Star Trek, and it's still a great film, full of heart. If you know Star Trek lore, you recognize a lot of situations, but it's not a parody, neither it mocks Star Trek. It's a love letter to it. There's not a single drop of mean-spirited content in the whole film. It doesn't even show the fans under a bad light, and most "parodies" love the "hurr durr nerds" approach. And Alan Rickman is a treasure.

Two of the best things about Guy: 1 - Guy was a “red shirt,” a dispensable character, who was the only one _not_ to get blown away on the deck when Sarris is disguised as Fred. 2 - Guy, who wasn’t important enough for a last name, not only “gets a last name” in the reboot, but gets the longest character name as well. 😂🥰😂🥰😂

So when the rock monster was attacking and they said you need to find his motivation,... as it turns out his motivation is silence. The little blue demons where making so much noise that it woke him up and made him angry. Later when he ended up getting tossed out into space that final scene was to show that he was suddenly at peace with the absolute silence of outer space and goes on to live happily ever after adrift and at peace.

Stopping by again and so here's another fun fact: When Jason does that posture in the captain's chair where he leans over with one hand on his thigh, Tim Allen said he's specifically doing Yul Brynner in The Ten Commandments. If you haven't seen that, you absolutely must. It's overblown, deadly serious mid-century Hollywood camp at its finest. Charlton Heston with his lantern jaw, Yul Brynner with his dark smolder, Anne Francis with her poisonous eyes, and color and spectacle like you've never seen. Seriously, younger people would automatically assume it had to be CGI, because doing it now the way it was done then - purely practical - would be impossible now. Put it on your list; you can't miss a real slice of grand Hollywood yaya.

The shaking was real. When they filmed the TV episode scene, they did the fake shake the camera and the actors fling themselves around. But the set of the real Protector bridge was built on an enormous gimble, the biggest ever made up to that point, so the bridge really could be shaken around. There were a lot of bruises when they filmed the battle scenes on that set as the actors were shaken out of their chairs and across the floor.

The DVD of the movie was hilarious because when we rented this movie way back in the day we had to wait for everyone to be ready to watch it and so we messed around with the menus at the time. It had an option in the extras menu that said "Activate Omega 13" where it did the things with the balls and just wound up back at the main menu. We had no idea why it did that until we watched the movie then wound up dying laughing when we actually understood it.

Apparently the engineer acting the way he did, and constantly snacking, was mostly the brainchild of Tony Shaloub himself. His character had very little fleshing out done in the script, so he suggested the quirks to make him more interesting. Great acting and understanding of the script on his part.

His character is supposed to be high the whole time, but they cut it to make it family friendly. This was originally R. They should've kept it that way imo. I think it would've done a lot better, but I remember the movie Snowday came out at the same time & it overshadowed it sadly.

@@d3l3tes00n The cut to make it more family-friendly is also why we get the badly ADR’d line, “Well, screw that!” It was (obviously) “fuck” in the original take, but the people in charge changed their minds so late in the process, the sets had already been dismantled, so they had no choice but to dub the line and hope for the best.

@@d3l3tes00n I disagree. Not saying it wouldn't still be funny, but it's kind of an overdone trope. So many comedies back then had to have a stoner character or at least a scene where somebody got high. This movie still feels surprisingly fresh (excluding some special effects, though even that holds up pretty well overall) but making his character just be high would have dated it a bit. It's personally way funnier to me that this is just the character's personality. It gave me the impression that he never quite fit in with his fellow humans, and meeting and interacting with these aliens was way more natural for him.

This movie got edited down to be kid-friendly because of The Rugrats Movie. After The Rugrats Movie was such a big hit the studio said "we need something kid-friendly" and picked Galaxy Quest to get the chop. Honestly I don't think it takes anything away from the film, it's arguably funnier when you can see where they've edited out the more adult content.

This is one of my all time favorite movies, speaking just in general as well as a big Star Trek fan. It's generally considered to be one of the best Star Trek movies and there is a great story out there about Patrick Stewart seeing this for the first time. There is also a wonderful documentary about this movie that I highly recommend if you enjoyed this. It really was lightning in a bottle! One of my favorite fun facts is that the aspect ratio changes 3 times: the intro where they show the old TV show, then it widens for the first 20ish minutes, and then widens again when the doors open to send Tim Allen's character back to Earth.

We find out Guy's last name earlier in the movie. When they're on the planet looking for the sphere, Jason refers to Guy as Fleegman. Also, damn Sigourney Weaver is lookin' good in this movie.

It was great to show this movie to my mom who is a Trekkie (OG series). She absolutely loved this movie, and I personally love the fact they cast Sigourney Weaver in this. She has said many times it was one of her favorite roles she has done. What I think that made this movie work so well is the fact it would fit right in as a Star Trek episode. And they made it to where the fans where key to helping them complete their mission. It bombed when it first came out, but now some many people love this movie. There was talks of a sequel but after Rickman pass they decided it would not work without him.

actually, the shift from 4:3 to 16:9 happened at the convention. Once the space doors opened, it went from 16:9 to 23:9. As Guy would say, "didn't you ever WATCH the show?!"
