Regarding the reason he's in the military, you guys were talking about it in the beginning. The aliens invaded and out of desperation, militaries around the world just took anyone who was even minimally associated with any sort of military. He said he was in the ROTC, but he was actually just 'a guy with an advertising firm' - so they took him for that job - to sell the war. He didn't 'weasel his way' through anything. He was taken in for his advertising skills. That's basically it. That's why he had zero fighting experience before all this.

Also a major dick move by that General. Horrible and petty leader. While Cruise was kind of scummy in the beginning of the film, the fact the General was using his position to protect some (his secretary's son), but willing sacrificing individuals with important skills sets for the longer game shows what a joke he was. When Cage reacquired the power from the Omega and died, he was sent back a day, which happened to corelate to before he met the general, and thus the invasion. However the Omega dying didn't change, because it was through Cage's newly reaquired power that time was reset, not the Omega's. Also after reading my comment several times it got me wondering; why didn't time reset for the Omega after it died. So I thought of a couple of possibilities. 1) The power works differently between the Omega and a human. The Omega needs to consciously (not be dead) activate the power while a human does not. We can even go deeper and say it's because humans ultimate fear is death and so that is why the power activates with death. 2) Time isn't actually rewound, but alternate timelines and/or universes are created instead. So in one timeline/universe the Omega just resets and Cage is still continuing his loops. (In turn creating more timelines/universes) While this ending is Cage's reset and is the "happy" timeline/universe. 3) It's just a plot hole. Simple as that.

For the record the General was 100% sending him to die after he threatened him. Originally he wouldve gone with a camera crew for optics, but it was still massivley dangerous which is why Cage didnt want to go. And he was right to object. He wouldve died. So after he threatened him with bad PR the general sent him to die as a no name soldier with zero experience dropped into an active war zone.
@ryanakers13722 жыл бұрын
The general's original plan wasn't meant to be a death sentence. Certainly dangerous, but it wouldn't do the general any good to have his PR team die. That's why he planned to embed Cage and his camera crew with a hundred thousand trained soldiers and send them to surprise attack a beach where all their intel said they would have very little resistance. Those soldiers would certainly have been given orders to protect Cage and the camera crew, so Cage would have been as safe as possible on a battlefield. Obviously the general changed plans after Cage threatened him.

@@ComicCrossing It's not an uncommon practice in the real world for journalists to be embedded with troops on the battlefield. It's been done during virtually every war/conflict in modern history. I don't know what precautions are taken to protect journalists irl, but it seems like the general was taking every precaution he could here: 1. Cage would be surrounded by thousands of well trained soldiers using the latest and best mimic killing weapons. 2. It was expected to be a surprise attack the mimics could not have prepared for. 3. All their satellite intel said there was only a small number of mimics at their landing zone. About the final reset- Cage's "main" reset (when he gets kicked awake and called a maggot) was 24 hrs before he is killed on the beach. The final battle in which Rita, Cage and the squad go to kill the Omega under the Louvre took place a few hours *before* the battle on the beach. So when Cage was "killed" after the Omega exploded- this was still hours before the point in time which he would be killed on the beach and sent back to getting kicked awake at Heathrow Base. So the final reset sent him back even further than his usual reset, because it took place earlier than the main reset. So *that* point in time was when he was in the helicopter arriving for his meeting with the General... Which of course was cancelled because the aliens lost the ability to fight, and were dying off- the war was over. If that makes any sense. LOL
@neb-taui-djeser10602 жыл бұрын
Sometimes he dies a day before invasion at PT to get to Rita or gets shot by Rita in training but still wakes up right at the maggot moment. He would wake up 24h earlier in the heli or so. Or he should wake up later cause he managed to get further and further from the first death on the beach to his death on the dam. Still a good movie but it has his flaws with time.

Cage was originally going to be embedded with a professional military film crew, so that he could tell the story of the successful invasion. When he tried to get out of it by blackmailing the general, the general took him seriously and had him arrested, and sent to a random infantry squad going in with the first wave. The point of being sent in with J Squad was specifically for him to die in combat so he couldn't pull any shit on the general.

At 49:00 General Brigham was just announcing "a total collapse of the enemy's capacity to fight" and that Russian and Chinese troops were sweeping Europe "without resistance." Cruise (Cage) had gone back the same amount of time, but this time, the Omega (and all the rest) were already dead. To the rest of the world, the aliens just suddenly all died for no reason. Only Cage knew why, but obviously, the rest of the world was celebrating regardless. The big battle was canceled, because there were no aliens left to fight. Cage still has the ability to reset time if he dies, but he no longer has any reason to use it. Granted, it'll be interesting to see when he dies of old age in 50 years, and restarts his last day. That might suck.

Great Reaction, although you guys seem to have completely missed the fact that the aliens are gone and the war is over, just like that General Brigham says on the tv in that last scene "a total collapse of the enemy capacity to fight", which that the Omega is dead and basically Cage went and survived because he got the blood on him one last time and that allowed him to survive. Now i don't think, even though the war is over, he still has the power to reset time. All of this paragraph just to let you guys know that the war is over and the aliens gone😆

The best theory I've heard is this: when Cage got the Alpha's blood on him he "replaced" that Alpha within the alien nervous system and that's why Cage's death always reset the day. It also kinda explains why the mimics on the beach never seemed to adapt to Cage, because the Alpha that was supposed to be watching that area was gone. Fast forward to the Omega getting blown up, Cage gets the Omega's blood on him just before the Omega resets the day meaning that Cage "replaces" the Omega within the alien nervous system. Since the mimics and Alphas can't connect with Cage the mimic horde's ability to fight collapses.

Cage technically would not have the power to reset time. The Alpha could only do that because it was an organic computer with the command line to do so. Cage has the blood (DNA) to respawn during resets, but not the capacity to activate that command line. Look at it this way for how the Omega operates: 1. The Omega is just a Server that runes programs based on a bunch of predetermined factors. 2. Alphas are just client programs being run by the Server. 3. The clients are constantly sending data over to the Server data of what they've witnessed and scene, similar to how players in a multiplayer shooter are sending over their actions to the singular game server to calculate. Let's say every real world second is a new backup file being sent to the server. 4. When an client dies, the server looks at the last backup sent over by that client and resets time back 24 hours. 5. It then sends that most recent backup data to every client upon them spawning during the time reload, giving them the information they need to avoid their death. 6. The server simultaneously then teleports itself 24 hours back in time as well, and then makes correction to it's production line (how it creates new mimics), so that they've physically adapted to being able to handle the next situation. Cage is only a client in this situation. Cage was never resetting time, it was the Omega doing so. The omega doesn't necessarily think and choose when to reset time, it only has a set perimeter for what it MUST follow when certain requirements are met. Cage was considered another Alpha to the Omega in terms of how it was supposed to operate and execute it's command lines, even if it was eventually able to become aware that something was wrong. If an Alpha dies, the Omega MUST execute that command line no matter what, Cage included. The reason why cage is able to survive and respawn the last time starts at command line 5 but causes a sort of paradox for the Omega. The Omega is able to backup data back 24 hours (remember, Cage and his group invaded at night, so it'd send him back earlier than the other times) successfully. Cage is prepped for backup and respawn as it moves over to the 6th command line to backup itself. The issue and error comes with the fact that the Omega itself is now dead and cannot send itself back in time. All the Alphas and mimics move entirely based on the Omega (Server's) instructions, so they cease to operate without the existence of the server running them. This leaves us with the result of only Cage being brought back and the mimics are ceasing to function, ending the war. If Cage gets hit by a car right now, he'll die. His blood will be some super rare material to be researched but that's about it.
@rexarsenio94472 жыл бұрын
23:51 The ability he got was like the omega which basically just "resets the day" so everything just goes to zero. That's why they started looking for him, the aliens were stuck too lol
@voratittchunharuckchot97112 жыл бұрын
When he first gets the power, he got it from Alpha's blood. This makes him an alpha, when he died, the signal will send to the Omega and the Omega will be the one that reset the time. The second time he gets the power, it is directly from the Omega, which is the source of the power. So when it died, Cage is the one who reset the time, not the Omega. And so, in the new timeline, the Omega is already dead.

When I first watched this movie, I thought it was just a generic Tom Cruise action film, but I was honestly impressed at the movie. The original source material is a Light Novel titled _All You Need Is Kill_ which I didn’t realize was Japanese until the end credits rolled. This just goes to show that it’s not the “Westernization” of a Japanese media that’s the problem (Cage’s character is essentially a “whitewashed” version of the Japanese protagonist Keiji), but rather staying true to the story, concept, and lore of the franchise *eyes Netflix’s Resident Evil and Death Note adaptations*

You misunderstood the ending. The guy literally said that they couldn’t detect Mimic activity anymore and that Russian and Chinese troops were moving through Europe unopposed. Cage killed the Omega before getting doused in Alpha blood (again) and dying himself. Cage thereby reset the time and woke up to a world without Mimics. Since the Omega kind of exists outside of time, it is dead now even with the time reset to an earlier point.

My most favorite Tom Cruise movie of all-time.
@ghostray32522 жыл бұрын
The ending is a bit sketch, but I think what happened is that when the protagonist killed Omega, he got its blood and replaced it, meaning now he is the center of the time-loop. And an alien "replaced" by a human (by spilling its blood on a human being) cannot come back (thrown outside the loop entirely). This is shown by the first Alpha that the protagonist killed (resulting in him gaining the ability) not present in any of the following loops. When the protagonist (now with Omega's ability) initiated the loop, Omega, which was replaced by the protagonist, was not included in the loop, so it stayed dead. And without Omega, the aliens are pretty much powerless. So in the end, the humanity won, but nobody (except for the protagonist) knows exactly why they won. To them, the aliens just shriveled and died after a mysterious explosion.

Both of them have to replace their orginals. Otherwise you end up with the orinal non killed version. But the Omega that went back was corrupted and overwrote the living version.

Love your reactions to this movie. Definitely an underrated gem. This movie does get critizied a bit for its seemingly sudden pivot to a 'happy ending.' Especially since the source material has a much darker ending. But personally I love the parallels to the Budist ideas of reincarnation. Cage starts off as the lowest form of life (a maggot). In each rebirth we watch him grow as he slowly begins to embody Sargeant Farrell's motto, "Through readiness and discipline we are masters of our fate," until finally in the end he's rewarded with the closest thing to Nirvana this story can offer.
@ryanakers13722 жыл бұрын
@lazarus921 I'd argue Cage does fulfill the true purpose of reincarnation as best as the setting of this story allows. When we first meet him, he blackmails the general to avoid putting his own life in danger even though that danger is supposed to be minimal and during the early parts of his training with Rita he's constantly looking for a way to get rid of or transfer the power to someone else. But his growing connection with Rita slowly makes him see beyond himself. This first manifests as him trying to keep Rita alive, but eventually he reaches the point where he is willing to see the mission through to the end even if he and Rita don't make it out alive.

@lazarus921 .....beliefs and projections of human existence is fine, but there comes a line to decide how stretched out the ideals being preached on. Religion says reincarnation (if such thing even happens) for being a better human is to be devoid of stuff needed to actually exist as living thing- a human like every living creature derive nutrient flow from other living sources, whether plants or animals. Plucking a plant from its roots is causing harm to it just to cook it and turn it to dish for consumption, let alone consuming other creatures. Every living creature follows this pattern but human is the only being who gets to decide how bad something looks depending how much blood spill or how many plants uprooted. Cause human brain developed special hypocritical deductive logic/reasoning based on where it fits the narrative.

Fun thing I missed the first time I watched this movie: At the end, when everyone is watching the news, the woman in front of Tom Cruise is Lara Pulver who played Irene Adler on Sherlock.

My impression is that Cage stole the Omegas reset from it. So he reset, but the Omega couldn't. And without the Omega, the ability to reset the day is gone after that.
@winchesterbear2 күн бұрын
The Edge of Tomorrow does not assume a multi-verse with time lines. When Cage resets Reality, everything starts over, except his memories.

This is actually an adaptation of a manga called All You Need Is Kill, it's a very good adaptation of the book but one thing the book did that I liked better was at a certain point they realize they cannot carry the ammo required to make it through the battle so they learn to use these massive battle axes instead.

The time rests one-day. Therefore, since they started this last effort earlier, then when it rest he went back even earlier. The 'Big Mystery' is what happens to him after that ending? Does he still have the power to reset time? and therefor when he eventually dies, doe he go back to that helicopter landing in London for the first time? If his life with Rita goes very well after that, does he pay someone to give him someone else's blood at some point, or just injures himself near a hospital to pass out and have them automatically give hem a transfusion (somewhat risky of course, and defies destiny by a significant margin).
@EternalKvK10 ай бұрын
the ability belongs to the mother alien, not to Toms character. So when the mother died, the ability to reset disappeared. He is now on his final life.
@nstents77812 жыл бұрын

When he first got the power, he reset to the activation date of that first Alpha. When he got the power at the end, he reset to the activation date of that last Alpha... However, since he destroyed the Omega before the last reset, there can be no future resets from the end point of the movie.
