What I did with this tent summer 2021 was to seam seal the exterior sewn seams then also inside seams. At the same time I spayed DWR all outside even where wind might blow rain . I must have used a full can of DWR. Then I sewed/ glue a loop on the bottom below the vent window to make a tie out so that side of tent wall does not collapse inward in a stiff wind. Yes I changed stakes to the Coughlans aluminum ones at Walmart and cut them to 7 inches. I used the 5x7 Ozark Trail tarp as a ground mat. In 25 f degree temp in southern Utah desert last November there was some condensation on the ceiling above my face in the middle of the night so I opened one vestibule door and was pleased that no condensation was found in the morning. One other thing I did was gorilla glue all stress points like pole ties, stake out loops, etc. Have not had it bad rain to say how it will handle that yet. So for $27 plus some time prepping it it's right near 3 lbs and if it breaks it is not a tragedy

Thanks, Lou! I think you hit the nail on the head here! "for $27 plus some time prepping if it's right near 3 lbs and if it breaks it is not a tragedy". I"m hoping with the seam sealing this tent will now be trail ready, because other than that it is fantastic tent. I like you're idea of putting a loop just underneath the window so you can stake that out. I could fore see that being an issue in the wind. I had thought about just sealing all the exterior seams, because I have some seam sealer left after sealing my other tent. You could easily pay 10 times this amount for a tent of the same weight (after swapping out stakes), so this could be an awesome budget buy. Thanks for sharing what you did with your Ozark trail! I think this will be helpful to others wanting a tent on a budget who are willing to put in a little prep!

I remember you mentioning it in one of your videos! I think you're right that it would work well for ideal conditions. The price is certainly right and I was impressed with how well it handled the wind! My hope is that it will now be a perfect budget 1P tent after the seam sealing, but only the next rainstorm will tell! Crazy you can get a sub 3lb tent for $27!

Good call on the Wise Owl stakes! I bought them a while back when I had first picked up a hammock- figuring I could use extra stakes either with my 20 year old target special “2-3 person backpacking tent”- (which, shockingly has been thru some stuff and did it’s job- except on one occasion but there was also human error involved in that one- needless to say, I’m not taking that on any trail). Those stakes are light & strong! I love Wise Owl. I’ve become a total fan girl with their gear. I hope you manage to get this tent in functional condition! I was looking at it a few days ago & said “no there’s just no way that’s even possible”- when I saw that giant seam down the middle of the floor, I thought I was going to fall over! What the hell?! Good luck & keep up the great content!

Thanks, Kristen! That's awesome you are a hammock camper! that's definitely something I want to get into! I have taken one to relax in during my trips, but always took a tent to sleep in as well. Maybe one day I'll take the leap! I'm also a big fan of the Wise Owl gear! They seem to consistently have good quality without being ridiculously expensive! These stakes have been fantastic so far! I thought the same thing as you when I first came across this tent "there is no way this thing will work for $27.94!" It just shouldn't be possible, right? 😆 I am hoping the tent will be good with the seams sealed. There is supposed to be a big rainstorm tonight, so that should give it a good test! If it's trail ready after just some quick seam sealing then I think this will end up being a great purchase! We'll see what happens! Thank you!

@@DoseofDirt I “aspire” to be a hammock camper lol! I decided over the past year to upgrade all of my camping stuff- I’m an only child who grew up with 2 parents whose idea of “roughing it” was staying in a 3-4 star hotel- so, with Covid etc, I’ve been really wanting to just get out and explore more- so long story short, I managed to get the sleeping bag I had been drooling over as a Christmas present, and now I’m just searching for last seasons models or lightly used gear to get me going the rest of the way- I love hammocks & have had 2 spine surgeries, the last one was so botched that my Mom suggested I sleep in a hammock inside lol- so, I got to thinking.. I will continue to use my ridiculous tent (somehow it fit myself, my partner, and my oversized Boston terrier/bed hog comfortably for a week straight just in the backyard a few years ago when we decided we wanted to camp but had to work so we couldn’t go anywhere lol) but in the meantime I’m still looking for sales on tents etc- my friend is an avid hiker & she knows all of the “secret spots locally” that are great for a day hike and an afternoon hammock nap- so, I intend on picking her brain & taking notes. I truly hope that tent works out for you bc that is a really huge deal! Thank you so much for all of your hard work uploading all of this content on here for people like me who live vicariously thru channels like yours until the weather gets a little better here in New England (does it ever truly get better though? Lol) i would grab that tent in a second if it was double walled- I just can’t do too much humidity/heat and that would essentially be ummm ALL of the months I have planned on spending outdoors lol.. isn’t it sad when gear junkies like us look forward to “torrential rain” bc we are testing out a product? Lol. I’ve never been so happy to hear about high winds & heavy rain in my life when I’ve got all of my gear together & a roof to shelter me while I put my gear to the test on its own lol 😂 wise owl prices are great- everything comes in its own nice little stuff sack, and I just overall dig that company. I’ll let you know if anything fails me down the road though lol. Good luck and enjoy!!

@@KristenWhere So awesome that you've gotten into hiking and backpacking! A larger tent that has worked well for me (and isn't super expensive) is from a company called Bessport. I actually have their 2 person and 3 person. The 3 person has fit me and 2 of my friends with no problem, or me, my daughter, and our two huskies! So it's pretty spacious and less than $100. LOL about New England weather! Are you still under 6 feet of snow up there? 😆 Yes! Whenever a storm is coming and I tell my kids I have to sleep outside, they just laugh. Thanks for the heads up! Yeah I’m sure your kids think you’re crazy now, but wait a few years- they’ll be out backpacking & telling stories about you guys all taking trips & making fun of you for sleeping out in the storm & you’ll all have a good laugh! I scored one of these for free. Someone ditched it along a trail. It was dry on the outside, but soaked on the inside. It was probably set up in an open meadow, with the doors closed. My rain test showed it to leaked in the same places that yours did. I used silicone sealer on the seams and then sprayed the whole tent with camp dry. So far, so good. Not a bad tent, but does need a bit of work.

They replaced them, but I don't know how much I trust the poles now.

Hey, Sue! Yes, that sounds similar to my experience with larger tents that have fiberglass poles. They just can't stand up to the wind or other pressures. I have a 10 man tent that has fiber glass poles that broke in the wind. I've taped them back together and still use the tent occasionally, but have to make sure I stake it really well! Nice to get a cheap tent to get into backpacking to make sure you like it, but they aren't built for the long haul. That's for sure. I DEFINITELY prefer aluminum poles, but they are more expensive. I'm currently on the hunt for a 4 man tent that isn't ridiculously heavy or expensive so i can take all 3 kids backpacking. Seems like they are either cheap with fiberglass poles or expensive with aluminum. Thanks so much for watching!

The orange and white model is typically the one with two poles and a rain fly. About 4 lbs. It's a foot wider too with no real vestibule because the fly isn't cut that way. They were copying a REI ultralight one person. They have very thin youth tent poles...all snap if the big puddle forms on the top of the fly. That puddle eventually leaks through to the sleeping camper too. High wind snaps them as well. Since they replaces your poles....you can fix that rain catch basin with a couple of struts across. If you kept the broken poles...use three sections of them. Also a pole section rescued from a broken pole makes a great field repair. This one will eventually break as it has all strain on one bow. Best long term waterproof is to carry a light tarp as a rainfly.

Hey Mike! I have wondered about buying used stuff on Amazon. It seems like that option is more available lately, especially with outdoor gear. I may have to try and and do a video about it, because you're right. You can save a ton of money that way! And I would think that if it is not as described (like it was supposed to be 'like new' but you get it and it has serious issues) Amazon would let you return it. But I'll have to look into it. I'm glad you like the Bessport 2P ! it's a great tent for a great price! $48 is an AMAZING price! I bought this tent a few years ago and used it on a camping trip. It rained for several hours heavily and I had no issues with rain coming in. But the worst part of the tent was the condensation at night. I would wake up and the corners of my pillow and sleeping bag would be wet and I would have to wipe off the inside of the tent or else it would drip on me if I bumped into it. The tent didn't flood so if you are fine with condensation then I didn't have a problem with that.
@DoseofDirt

Interesting that yours worked so well and mine didn't! 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂🤷‍♂ Ya, condensation can be an issue with this tent for sure. If it isn't raining I'll often just sleep with the vestibule door open. But ya, if it's raining at night then you have to keep the door closed and I've sometimes been in situations that I have to just wipe the inside of a tent (not this one) down every few hours during the night. Such a pain!

Hey Dudly! Thanks for your comment. I own a few pieces of Ozark gear and am overall impressed. I actually haven't heard anyone trash the tent. On the contrary, I have heard several recommend the tent. Probably because I follow other budget minded backpackers 😆 so I was honestly surprised by the leaking. I agree with you that it is a great value IF my seam sealing fixes the leaking. One thing I've thought about for an inexpensive set up is a cheap 1 person tent that has a rain fly, but ditch the rain-fly and use a tarp with it. I have a couple friends that use that setup for car camping - but their tarp and tent is much larger. I would do it on a smaller scale. That setup is nice because without the rain fly on the tent the ventilation is much better - but you are still protected. I won a Paria Arches 1P last year and that's a set up I want to try with the tent.
@DoseofDirt

Will you do a budget tent showdown?
@DoseofDirt
@DoseofDirt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mikayla! That is something I would really like to do! I've been trying to track down some trail worthy budget tents to include. There are SO MANY options (and so many bad ones...). Are there any certain ones you're considering? I'll keep working on the video!

@@DoseofDirt Well, I don’t have any specifics but I am looking for a budget friendly tent that I can use for car camping that will hold its own. Personally, I’m looking for a 3-4 person tent with room to stand in. So if you have any recommendations on where to start (even if it’s not in a video) I would gladly take the advice :)
@DoseofDirt
@DoseofDirt 2 жыл бұрын
@@mikaylacollins I was thinking of a recommendation until you said 'room to stand in'. I have a 3 person Bessport tent that weighs about 5.5 lbs, but is probably the tent I've used the most. It was only about $100. But it's definitely not tall enough to stand in. When I'm looking for budget gear that I think will last, I look for brands that have been around for a while. A lot of budget products on amazon are from companies that come and go. I would look for something with aluminum or steel poles (backpacking I would say aluminum, but for car camping you wouldn't mind the weight of steel). A lot of budget tents have fiberglass poles, which just don't last. And with 3-4 people you'll want good ventilation. It should have a thicker floor as well since standing means more wear on the floor. I'd probably consider getting a ground cloth or tarp to go under it as well. One that seems like a good option is the 'Alps Mountaineering Camp Creek 4-Person Tent' on Amazon. One of the colors is only $166 right now If you decide on something, I'd love to know what it is!

Could you do a review of the Paria Zion tent?
@DoseofDirt
@DoseofDirt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kayla! I've been eying a few tents from Paria. I have been impressed with any gear I've purchased from them so far. I need to save a bit more into the gear budget before I buy another tent, but these ones are definitely on the short list for me! I'm curious - are you looking for 1, 2, or 3 person? What I CAN tell you is that Paria's customer service is first class! I got a Recharge XL (I think you asked for a review of that one, so hopefully you saw that video!) and it seemed to have a faulty valve. So I emailed them (from my personal email, because I didn't want them to know I would be reviewing it on KZbin) and they sent me a brand new pad, no questions asked. It was at my door in just 2 days. Did you end up getting a Recharge XL or go with something else? Would love to know what you got and what you think of it!

@Dose of Dirt I'm looking at the 2p version. I'm stuck between that one and the Naturehike Mongar 2 which as far as I can tell is basically the same but there are a lot more reviews of the Naturehike tent than the Paria. I did see your review of the Recharge pad and ended up buying one so thanks for that! I am really leaning towards the Paria tent for all the reasons you gave about Paria as a company but I would just like a more in depth look at the tent before I buy it.

Most of these under $60 tents work with after purchase seam seal and a spray down of silicone water guard. Your video is exactly what purchasers need. They miss all the short seams and only tape the long seams. May as well do the tub floor seam too...they skip that since they heat treat it on in sewing and it eventually leaks. These are all thin polytaffeta...so a spray down every year is going to be needed. This tent is popular with motorcycle campers....perfect for one rider overnight...and the "motorcycle tent" is likely $500. If motor camping, a great setup time saver is to leave your sleep pad and quilt/s bag in the tent if a dry night. Fold it down and tightly roll it with the folded poles. Motor campers move almost every night so this tent, this way, makes camp setup/packup 2 minutes.

Genius idea leaving the pad and bag in the tent when you role it up! I may have to try that backpacking as well. Just roll it all up and shove it in the pack! Thanks for your comment!

I slept in my 3F UL Gear Lanshan 1 Pro last night in the rain after sealing the seams (that trekking pole tent I messaged you about). It worked great! Held out the rain and had decent room inside as well. I honestly think there are a few things they do better than Zpacks, which is a little lighter but 4 times the price!

Hey! Thanks for adding to the discussion! Ya, but I look at that as sort of like all the food products that say "may contain tree nuts" it's not actually helpful at all, but more just to cover themselves in the potential scenario that issues arise. You can see in the tent that seam sealing was at least attempted. Just clearly not a great job. But my next video is actually about waterproofing this and another budget tent (that ALSO failed the rain test)! So now it is completely waterproof and trail worthy! Thanks for watching!

You think that water was bad.... its waaaaaaay worse when you sleep in it. Your mousture and breathing makes it worse. For the same price, 1 pound heavier, get the 3 man version. Its 7×7 so you can fit your gear in there too.
@DoseofDirt
@DoseofDirt 2 жыл бұрын
Ya, the ventilation in this tent definitely is not the best. That little window doesn't do a lot to help! I'll have to look into that 3 man version. I'm still trying to decide if I want to put more into trying to make this tent waterproof, because I can't find anything else as cheap and light as this tent! I'll have to check out the 7x7! Thanks for the tip!

I've used it down to...New Years Eve temp (maybe 30°F) its...FINE. my main gripe with tents is...this unmaintained sanctuary that is my body CRAMPS when laying on the ground...I've mentioned before how I've invented new swear words getting out of that bitch just to pee..m Whatever...trying for hammocks. I love them for the afternoon nap, so would think that sleeping in them overnight (with the right setup) would be amazing. And now I live somewhere with trees, so I can actually try it and depend on having trees! We'll see if I actually pull the trigger though... Weight of this one is 3.4 lbs, but the stakes are a full 10oz! STEEL stakes. Crazy. But not bad for $30. Just wish it didn't leak like a sieve!
