It's not worth for testing the dosimeter but if you find something mains powered that needs them installed to work properly NiMH batteries labeled as V40H or ZM40H have one end wider than the other so you can't put them backwards on devices designed to use those but they fit in place of the LR44. I had a plug timer and a plug thermostat that used that kind of batteries to keep the settings while unplugged or during blackouts. Edit: It seems that the dosimeter and charger were already designed for batteries shaped like the V40H, the narrow end is the positive and the wider end is the negative.

Interesting that how much electronics have evolved... Nowadays you can even fit a SiPM with a scintillation crystal plus low power screen in such a small space... Nevertheless, this small device is phenomenal if you place it in that era: 400V DC supply from two coin cells is not a small feat in such small space. I wonder if they use the back EMF of the transformer primary to create a higher voltage for the piezo buzzer...

Those are in very unusual casings. There is only one another type of transistor they made in those case, KT361. All the rest looked pretty usual, but those two... well, they are special :)
@Muonium16 ай бұрын
Very interesting. The circuit construction is surprisingly primitive for something designed in the early 90s and resembles hand soldered consumer circuitry from the 60s in the West. It's possible this may be less to do with the expected inferiority of (immediate post) Soviet era electronics though and more a consequence of the very low production numbers for such a device. I wonder what the price was.

@ChernobylFamily - I have a Biri and there are indeed compatible rechargeable cells available, the varta 1/V65HT is Nickel-Metal hydride, and is the correct size to fit, they are usually found in PCB mount format so you will have to snap off the terminals but otherwise they fit perfectly. Incidentally, there isn't actually a sounder/speaker inside, the sound is actually generated by the transformer, that's also why you can hear it ticking when it is operating normally. The small brass spring on top of the transformer effectively changes the tone of the sound, if you screw it in it gets higher, loosen it and it gets lower. I used to carry my BIRI on a keychain but it started to get damaged so removed it, I wanted to put it into a new case but they are really expensive now!

I did not disassemble it, because it looks it will get broken completely if I do it. I guess there is a transformer and and a few more parts, as it is a very very small. Somehow we did not have a good luck to get a functional DKP-50-A, seemingly capacitors in them are not as good as in ID-1.

A question about the battery: I have some experience with cameras and light meters from the 1990s and older, and some of them require discontinued mercury batteries (РЦ in the USSR) not just for the nominal voltage, but for the specific voltage dropoff and resistance values that 1.5V alkaline batteries don’t match Can this device also be like that? If so, wrong chemistry batteries can throw off the calibration

Might be. To answer properly, we need technical specifications (that document with id СДИЖ.332564.000ТУ marked on the box) to see, but so far we do not have access to it.
