Honestly this movie is less about the LGBT than it is about men learning to respect women and realising they can actually be friends with women. It just uses the pretend gay aspect as a vehicle to reach that message. For movies where the actual subject matter is the LGBT, you should definitely check out Badhaai Do with Rajkumar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar. Really underrated, it's one of the best Hindi films that have come out in the last few years.

Political correctness: I like the fact that in Indian movies all kind of jokes can be cracked without the directors being afraid of being politically incorrect or of hurting someones feelings. They just entertain the audience.

I agree, I think directors as creators should be able to make it how they want. But ofcourse, can't do anything about the criticism as it's only natural. I think the problem comes only when the joke not funny and simply just regressive. Dostana was wonderful because it was actually funny. But throughout history, alot of times queer people were simply used as fun element character. Which is obviously not funny and actually just regressive. Dostana actually showed that jokes can be made about the gays but it needs to be done right. They didn't just use the gays in this film to add a funny element. The characters themselves were pretty funny as it should be in movies. So yeah, I think they should not fear from making funny jokes on all things. Just do it right and it's not an issue.

Only difference is now if you're just gonna be sexist or regressive and try to hide in story in the name of a unfunny joke, people will now call you out on it. People didn't do that in the past. Accountability for film makers is now a thing. Which as a society is also important. This movie was actually funny. It needs to be done right like this.

Very good observation. I would say it's a two edged sword and needs a special type of skill b'coz there's a fine line b/w being entertaining nd being offensive. Handful of directors are called out these days by the critics who don't acknowledge it as a medium of entertainment.
