I have a folder in Apple Notes that I named Wallet and this is where I store individual photos of my loyalty cards, library card, etc., so I don’t have to keep key tags or full sized cards. I open Apple Notes, open my Wallet folder, touch the file with my CVS card and hold my phone up for the clerk to scan. It works every time.

I tested the limits of Apple Notes in terms of memory. I wanted to transform into a note this big file I had, the full 614 pages of a dictionary I summarized. And I was astounded: no problem whatsoever, the note is fully functional, no slowing down as I scroll into it.

Great review! I'm a 15 year user of Evernote, but now that I'm retired I don't like Evernotes continual rise in price. I exported all my Evernotes into PDF, then uninstalled it in favor of Apple Notes. Up until now, I've not paid for Apple iCloud. But if my Notes storage gets larger, Apple's Cloud storage is far cheaper than Evernotes yearly cost.

I am a doctoral student and I use Apple Notes extensively while doing research. I keep two screens open on my iPad at one time-the article I'm reading and Apple Notes. Using smart notes I can organize my research and quickly find it when needed. I use Apple Notes in my personal life as well. The checklist feature is great for grocery lists. Once you tap on an item, it goes to the bottom of the list but is still there for the next shopping trip. In my work I use the scan document feature to turn in time sheets and other documentation. I agree with you that the Smart note feature is a great search tool.

Have you considered discussing the Reminders app? I found the most amazing thing when I set a reminder for a specific location (like when I drive past a certain store on my way home). You can actually increase or decrease the radius from that location so you get the reminder a little sooner and not too late (like when you are passing said store). It was brilliant!

I also use reminders for shopping for groceries. You can create an entire list of every grocery item you buy over time and mark them all as completed. Then when you need something you just open the list, click the item needed again and it immediately moves to the top of the list which can then be checked off when you pick it up.

FYI, if you hold the Apple Pencil stroke (stop moving it, but don’t lift it from the iPad surface) at the end of creating certain markups (circle, arrow, straight line, heart, triangle, square, heart, etc) it will create a ‘perfect’ version of said object .. in your example, you would have had a couple of arrows, a square, and straight lines of highlight color on your text ..

One “feature” of Notes that I use is its ability to strip formatting, when copy and pasting. If you copy formatted text from a website and wish to paste it into an email, by first pasting it into Notes and re-copying it, the original formatting is removed.

Apple Notes is my go to solution for my family; my favorite feature is "sharing" content to Apple Notes; I share hotel reservations; tickets; etc... to shared Apple Notes folders. note: you can even share to an existing Apple Note to append new content to an existing note. It's also possible to put an "apple notes folder" on the desktop; that makes it easy to access tickets, hotel reservations, amazing return QR codes, etc...

I have been an Apple Notes fan since the first day I bought my first iPhone. I’ve always appreciated the simplicity of it. That said, I have also tried so many note taking type apps because they had the one or more shiny things than Apple’s. No matter what new shiny object other apps have, I end up transferring those notes back to Apple. Great job on your story telling of Apple Notes. I even learned about the option to capture text. Thank you.

Hi Steve, wonderful video, even if I already knew all the features is never to much to listen how other advanced users put into use this great app. I recently started to use Apple Notes as my main notetaking system. The bigest disavantaged that I see is that, as I'm a Windows user, would be very appreciate if Apple improved their Apple Notes inside icloud, which is horrible, or release an App for windows.

As a tiny modification to the search feature and for organizational purposes I add emojis to some of my titles, giving the same emoji to items that have a common thread but which are being kept in different folders. Maybe this is a similar function to using smart folders and hashtags at the bottom of the note, but I think the visual component works well for me.

Again, I was offered the full emoji selection. Last, I decided to see what would happen if I typed an emoji into the Notes search bar. And once again, I was offered the full emoji selection. The most powerful thing about this app is the simplicity. Other apps might have richer features but I find myself always switching between apps like notion, evernote etc. It is the switching that impacted my productivity with the apps. I use Notes all the time. I regularly find myself taking scans, inserting text, sharing notes (like a grocery list, and keeping a locked note with passwords. I would like to see apple incorporate the recording function (audio and/or video) similar to notability where notes are synced with a recording. It would be especially cool if they could sync across devices, like setting up the iPhone to record something while I take written notes on the iPad and having them sync together so when I review the note and listen to the audio the notes “re-write” themselves as I listen to the playback.

Steve, the wondrous (at times!) algorithms brought your video into my view. This is excellent work. I like your thoroughness and clarity of communication. I'll be sharing this widely and have just subscribed to your channel. Keep up the great work! Joe (Dundee, Scotland)

I have been using Microsoft OneNote for over 15 years. I think it does, and has forever, all of this and more. I use it mainly in a business scenario but it does personal stuff obviously. The camera integration using an iphone may be better with this, but I don't do that much. One thing I do all the time is "print to OneNote" using the print driver. This allows pdf email attachments, which I get all the time, to be organized and processed through OCR in the OneNote search index. This, for me, has been a daily use since 2008 and has been an enormous advantage. I know Apple people like Apple stuff, but all of your key points (have to see about the camera) OneNote has done all that for a very long time.

Yes on comparing (or even combining) Google Keep with Apple Notes. I use Android platforms (phones/tablets) & often need to ‘integrate’ those two note apps. Thank you for your research & presentation(s)!

Good presentation. I have used apple notes since it’s inception. One thing that would be helpful especially for especially medical stuff is an integrated fax app.

Terrific information. I'm sorting my notes into folder right now. Is there a way to create a hyperlinked text? For example I want to see the word- London Bridge- but upon taping the word a webpage opens. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for pointing out the Scan Text and Scan Document integrations. Ever since my Evernote days, I've found the need to scan both text and documents. I've used Scanner Pro since. I migrated from Evernote to Obsidian when the future of Evernote became questionable. Whereas I like the idea of Markdown, it's way too unwieldy (who can remember all those formatting sequences?) and Obsidian has grown into an overly complex beast. I'm going to be testing Notes going forward, but I have a good feeling about it.

Thanks for the video. I personally use Apple devices such as phones and iPads but not their computers. This is where Apple Notes falls down in that the web app is terrible. For example you cannot paste images into the web application so for that reason I have to use Google Keep for image capture on my PC.

I personally love tags, It makes it possible to skip using folders, instead you can implement a system (I use PARA) to organize your content without dragging and dropping, simply type # and your tag name, hit the space button and voila, you're done. Also scanned documents and text in pictures is searchable. Using apple notes for documentation archive is awesome!

Sounds interesting but I would hate being stuck in the Apple ecosystem. Apple is number one now, but I remember when other phones, like Palm Treo product lines and Centro. I copy and pasted all of my Palm Treo notes to my new BlackBerry.. Also, not to forget about the Blackberry. They were the most popular smart phone of all at the time. I used their built in Notes app. It worked very well and I had hundreds of notes back then. Also just to mention, BlackBerry had excellent wireless backup and sync. BUT as early as 2010-2011…. somewhere around then, I got the touchscreen bug, like most everyone else. I opted for an Android. The problem was All of my notes were stuck in the Blackberry ecosystem. The only way I could think of to get my notes out, was to painstakingly copy and paste out all of my notes into Google Documents. About a year after that, I was missing a BlackBerry again. New problem, was also an old problem. Now my notes were stuck in the Google ecosystem. I finally turned to Evernote, around 2012. It was cross platform, on BB, Android, and iPhone. I painstakingly copied my notes into Evernote then. Ever since then, I have owned more BB, countless Android phones, and a couple of iphones. My notes are always with me now, no matter which phone line I choose. I'm sure Apple notes is excellent, but I just don't want to be trapped again. Good luck to you all, no matter which app you choose. I love Steve's videos. That's why I'm here.

I have far too many notes in Evernote to abandon it, and I use the browser extension ALL THE TIME to save news articles, KZbin videos, and various websites directly to Evernote. However, I do tend to keep shopping lists and inventory lists of many of my art supplies (so that I don't make duplicate purchases) in Apple Notes because it is so easy to just pull out my phone and access the Notes app (and it's not nearly as cluttered as Evernote is). Now that you've pointed out the Siri note-taking feature, though, and I just purchased an Apple Watch, I am looking forward to saying, "Hey Siri ...." whenever I want to capture an idea or reminder on the fly. THAT is super convenient, and I can always just review my Apple Notes at the end of the day and transfer whatever I need to to other apps (like Evernote) quite quickly. Also great to hear about the feature that allows you to take photos, scan docs, and transfer text. I will make use of those now that I know about them. I have not one but two password apps that I use: Last Pass and 1Password. So I probably won't use the locking feature. Thank you for the great review!

A brilliant addition to apple notes, I never used the camera with notes, thank you for that. I do dictate notes, however if there is conversation going on around me, words can get into the text that should not be there. This problem also happens when writing a comment after I click on the save button, this is because apple put the keyboard/audio icon over the save icon, so when I click in that area the first click sends the text to the middle of the screen for the save icon to be visible, at this point extraneous words can be picked up because the first click automatically assumes the audio mode was selected. Can that keyboard/audio button be located elsewhere?
