I love this translation. I know it has its drawbacks from the point of view of modern biblical scholarship. For example, it is a translation of the Vulgate and not from the original languages; although, if you compare the Vulgate with the Hebrew and Greek, you will find that in most places they match up quite closely with it. It uses a lot of Latinate vocabulary like ''holocausts'' and ''immolate'' etc. But often this Latinate vocabulary captures a specific meaning of the Latin text that cannot be accurately rendered into idiomatic English, and hence an attempted English translation of it may not have been more accurate and fruitful. Putting these drawbacks aside, I have to say that it is a beautiful Catholic translation of the Scriptures which is also faithful to Catholic tradition. It makes use of the use singular and you plural distinction like the KJV, which I find to be enormously helpful when reading the Scriptures. More interestingly, often I find that Jerome's Latin Vulgate translation captures the meaning of the Hebrew and Greek texts better than more literal translations like the KJV. Jerome was fluent in Greek and Latin and also knew Hebrew quite well. He was able to produce an excellent dynamic equivalence translation of the Scriptures where it so required for literary beauty.

Thanks! Under normal circumstances, I'd say relying on one man for a translation would be a bad idea. But when that one man is Saint Jerome... well, you can't argue with the result!

The phraseology of the KJV is more poetic in my opinion. But I use the Douay Rheims Challoner most of all my various Bible translations. The footnotes IMHO are more Christ Centered. And I have found some wordings of passages more meaningful in the DRC (such as Ecclesiastes 1:15). I always suggest Catholics and Protestants alike read 1st Maccabees Chapter 1 (Why these books are now excluded is beyond me) as a definition of Tyranny and how evil repeats from generation to generation. Or the passage of Wisdom 3 which is used in the Mass for the dead on November 2 (All Souls Day) Please enjoy! Suffer my two cents and God Bless us all.

Tan books just released a large print version of the Douay-Reims with a beautiful design on the front cover. It’s approximately 9.25” tall and 6.25” wide, with gold guild and stamping. It is a black “leatherette” cover, but a good candidate for a rebind perhaps? Anyhow, it’s on sale for $41 from its original $70 price.

I would argue that the Greek/Eastern Orthodox use the Greek Old Testament-LXX Septuagint, it should be considered the oldest bible translation based on antiquity, the new testament writers apparently used it or its predecessor when quoting the Old Testament

I happen to have a reprinted copy of the Original Douay-Rheims and it is in fact almost slavishly transliterated from the Vulgate. It's super interesting but also difficult to read because the syntax is incredibly archaic. Needless to say Bishop Challoner's revision that you have there is a very nice update.

@@ma-mo I have a 1611 KJV as well and while it does have some of the same quirks the original douay texts are definitely on their own level. I think part of it is our language in common use developed in part due to the KJV where the Latinate english of the Douay bible was essentially restricted to a small populations of recusants and expats.

Father Mitch Pacwa SJ has told a story of Jerome's knowledge of Hebrew. While learning Hebrew he was much distracted by lustfull thoughts of the dancing girls of Rome. Oh those dancing girls! Jerome would return to his scholarly tasks with renewed attention when these thoughts would intrude. Fr Mitch observed that if all his students showed similar grace and fortitude that there would be nothing they could not accomplish. Ronald Knox is the only other man I know of to have produced a translation without assistance. Knox was, as I understand a contemporary of Chesterton, and like Chesterton was a popular author of detective stories. Knox's translation is published by Baronius Press.

If you read the entire verse, once using the pronoun "she", and once using "he", it actually seems to make more grammatical sense when "she" is used. In that case, of course, "she" would be Mary, the Mother of the Redeemer, who, through Him, does indeed crush the head of the serpent. If you don't or can't agree with that, then know that both the 1966 Jerusalem Bible and the 1985 New Jerusalem Bible, both use the pronoun "it" instead of "he" or"she". Good luck with THAT! And though I don't own or have access to the New English Bible, I understand it got around this by covering all the bases: it uses the pronoun "they".

The Douay removes scriptures. The KJV in Romans 11:6 reads "And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work." The Douay removes half of this from the bible, and the footnote goes even further by "explaining" we are saved by works if they are done by a Catholic.....
@qui1ezio
@qui1ezio 10 ай бұрын
The Douay-Rheims was made before the kjv. The kjv added many things and removed books from the Bible, it is a corrupted version. Why would one trust the kjv? It uses the jewish canon, not the Christian canon. The kjv was state sponsored Bible made by a secular king who had no authority to lead a translation of scripture.
