Fine stories. I could listen to them all day long. Also, fine comparisons between the P51 and Spitfire, a subject that can cause a lot of butthurt between armchair pros. I think this chap handled it perfectly.

Great stories! Kinda ironic that he joined the RCAF and flew Mustangs, then joined the USAAF and flew Spitfires before going back to Mustangs

Looks like he started in the Allison engined P-51A. Am I correct?
@jeffreymcfadden94035 жыл бұрын
look at the scoop above the engine,,this is a 51A w/allison.
@dukecraig24025 жыл бұрын
@@jeffreymcfadden9403 Here's a little known fact for ya, the P51A with the Allison engine was faster then the Merlin powered P51 or the Spitfire below 5,000 feet, the NACA reports show that, the reason being is because the Allison powered P51 didn't have a 2nd stage in the supercharger dragging 250 HP more off of the engine, people think the Merlin was more powerful than the Allison but it wasn't, it was only more powerful above 9,000 feet or so because of the superchargers 2nd stage, when a two stage supercharger was developed for the Allison it's power at altitude was higher than the Merlin.
@AmericasChoice4 жыл бұрын
@@dukecraig2402 The Allison was probably the best low altitude water-cooled engine of the war. The P-38 performed better with Allisons than it did when tested with Packards. The Merlin was over-rated IMHO. Now the Griffon...that was an engine.

Duke Craig Hi Duke, I wasn’t aware that they made a high altitude version of the Allison for the mustang. Were any of them used in the war? Where should I go to find out information about this? Thank you, Steve
